1. I'll go with the old Oilcans on this one... West Hardin - 31 Burkeville - 15
 2. May be a sloppy game but I think HD is ready..... Bobcats: 29 Hornets: 16
 3. Baytown Lee Port Arthur Memorial Beaumont Ozen Nederland West Orange-Stark Port Neches-Groves Vidor Dayton Barbers Hill Woodlands College Park Hardin-Jefferson East Chambers Newton Hamshire-Fannett Jasper Kountze Hull-Daisetta Evadale Deweyville West Sabine West Hardin Buna Woodville San Augustine
 4. Joe Allen Slack early 90's at Hull-Daisetta. All-state running back, three time all-state guard in basketball, qualified for regionals and I believe the state meet in the 100m and 200m dash. Bad thing was, baseball was probably his best sport and HD didn't have a baseball program during his time in school. He played tailback at about 185lbs, but by the time he was 20, dude was probably 6'3" 230lbs and could still jump out of the gym and outrun anyone. He should have played big time ball. Gene Walker was also an all-state running back and all-state basketball in early 60's at Hull-Daisetta, leading the Bobcats to their first state championship game appearance. I'm sure he was a track star as well. He went on to play at Rice and in 2010 was inducted into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame and currently is a member of the Rice University Athletic Advisory Board.

Not to mention the tradition, a new offense, a new coach and people from all over Texas and yes many states pulling for them. This thread should be locked because the answer is clear
Jeez man, cut us some slack.... lol  ;)
 6. Liberty County: 2000 Dayton Broncos: Area Qualifier 4A DII Cleveland Indians: State Quarterfinalist 3A DI Liberty Panthers: Bi-District Qualifier 3A DII Hardin Hornets: Bi-District Qualifier 2A DI Hull-Daisetta Bobcats: Bi-District Qualifier 2A DII I thought they had the clean sweep based off the list that was posted earlier in the thread..... Then I realized Liberty County has SIX schools. Tarkington is in Liberty Co. Tarkington only has one playoff appearance in school history and that was 56 years ago (1956). Still five out of six ain't bad. Four teams went a few times. All-Time Playoff appearances for Liberty Co: Dayton: 27 appearances (including currently 16 in a row dating back to 1995) Cleveland: 14 playoff appearances (including 9 since 1997) Liberty: 24 appearances (including 12 trips since 1995) Hardin: 7 appearances (including 5 since 2000) Hull-Daisetta: 31 appearances (including 10 since 1998) Tarkington: 1 appearance (1956) Dayton has appeared in one state championship game (2008) and Hull-Daisetta has appeared in two (1961 and 1979), winning Liberty County's only State Championship.
 7.
How did Kelly look? WS has them on the 31st in the opener.
This is surely not the same Kelly team from last year that beat East Chambers and Hampshire Fannett. They have a strong armed QB that appears to have good accuracy and a few sure handed receivers. O-Line appears to be a weakness and I'm not sure that they will have much of a running game at all. Their defense was average but Warren was able to pound them just never broke any big gainers. Just based off this scrimmage, I think if WS is as good or better than they were last year, then the Tigers will win. Better be able to defend the spread passing attack tho.
 8. Warren's 1st team off vs Kelly 1st team def to start. Kelly defense looked pretty good. Warren was able to pick up one or two first downs over the 15 plays but Kelly stopped them on several 3rd downs and only allowed about 30-40 totals yards with resets to 30yd line if 1st down wasn't picked up in three downs. Kelly inside LB #8 stood out to me. Warren did have positive yardage on most plays but no big plays and Kelly kept them out of the end zone. Hull-Daisetta 1st team off vs Warren 1st team defense. HD marched 70 yards on 11 plays ending in a short touchdown run in by QB Austin Edmundson. Good runs by Tyler Drake and Derrell Lavalais. Offense line for HD was very impressive. One more 1st down was picked up by HD before their 15 plays were up. #55 from Warren is a big kid and is a load at DT. Kelly 1st team off vs Hull-Daisetta 1st team defense. Kelly started off with a nice completion for a first down on their second snap. The Bobcat defense stepped up on the next three plays creating a loss on a sweep, a big hit on a dive by Derrell Lavalais for no gain, then a big loss on a sack. Kelly reset their own 30 again. Back and forth for five or six plays with minor gains. Kelly QB had a good run (about 30yards) that was called back on a hold. Kelly completed a long pass down inside the HD 5yard line. HD created an incompletion on first down and the Bobcat defense came up with a big play stopping Kelly's tailback for a big loss on the Bulldog's final allotted play not allowing a score. HD's second team offense picked up a couple first downs vs Kelly's 2nd team def before the scrimmage was called for lightning. HD scored the only touchdown of the scrimmage and they were not reset on downs. Overall I think HD looked the best in the scrimmage. Kelly has some good athletes and their passing game would have given HD trouble in a full game. I would have liked to have seen HD 1st O vs Kelly 1st D. Warren has a bunch of big kids and they are well coached and may surprise a few folks. Lots of room for improvement by all teams but considering the shortened time, it was good experience.
 9. I remember our head coach used to kick his o-lineman in the butt if they false started! More embarrassing than painful, and it worked. Our defensive coordinator said you had to be an A$$hole to play defense for him. No sissy mama's boys. Didn't care how big, fast, or strong you were, you had to be nasty! Loved playing for that guy!! I played tight end on offense (about 6'1" 215lbs at the time) and we were going to run a new play. Rifle Split 39 quick pitch. I was split wide, and my job was to go straight down the line of scrimmage and crack back on the first man that showed second level.... pitch to tailback coming my way. I loved to crack back on people, so needless to say I was really excited to run this play. I bolt down the line of scrimmage on the snap, and a sophomore scout team linebacker (about 60lbs lighter than me) was scraping my way, and he never had a clue what hit him... straight ear hole, somersault backflip, give me the juice gordy, lights out baby! The shot was so loud it was like a shotgun going off. The running back and everyone stopped in the middle of the play. I was standing over this poor kid, who's body looked mangled and dead and he was totally knocked out. Our coaches ran in to check on him and make sure he was gonna be ok. Our head coach grabbed me by the facemask and started yelling at me about how I was supposed to take it easy on the underclassmen and how that was bullcrap! I said "Coach, you called the play." Another coach got in my face griping me out too. The kid is still down, huddle around him when our defensive coordinator slides up behind me, slaps me on the butt and says "Way to be a F'n A$$hole Broom!!!" The rest of our coaches just glared at him and he never changed the intense look on his face. That dude was a tough coach and knew how to motivate defensive players! P.S. The guy woke up and was fine. He quit that day and never played again, but no serious injuries.
 10. Was Dexter Hebert the guy they called Kelly's Comet back in the late 80's/early 90's? I remember HD playing Bmt Kelly and they had a great running back and that's what they were calling him.
 11. Good luck to the Rebels this year!

Jeff Spikes from Burkeville was a beast too. 3,000+ yards as a senior and 7,500+ in his career. T.J. Walker from Hull-Daisetta was a great pure running back as well. Rushed for over 1,600 yards as a sophomore, tore his ACL the first game of his junior year and bounced back to have a monster 2,000 yard season as a senior.
where is T.J.??
Last I'd heard T.J. is still around the HD/Raywood/Liberty area. He never got his grades right to go play college ball. He made All-State at running back as a senior. Two years after he graduated T.J. hopped on a train in Beaumont heading towards Liberty because he didn't have a ride home from a party one night. He jumped off in Raywood and when he did, his foot was nearly cut off by the train, and was later amputated after he was air lifted to Herman hospital. I saw him a couple years ago at Wal-Mart in Liberty...couldn't tell he had a prosthetic foot, same big smile, and looked like he could still line up at tailback. He had a some on and off field issues that he was never able to overcome as far as football is concerned. He was one hell of a running back though.

 14. A couple recent small school WR's that were very good: Juan Gamez - Hull-Daisetta 53 rec, 1,281yds, 18 TDs (plus 140+ tackles on def) 2A 1st Team All-State WR. Very impressive here because HD didn't run a passing offense and he was triple teamed nearly every play. Still put up those numbers in only 9 games in 2001. Daniel Marsh - Hardin- 75 rec, 1538 yards receiving, 21TD's 2A 1st Team All-State WR helping to lead Hardin to a 9-3 record in 2007.
 15. Ready for August 31st and the Bobcats vs. Hornets!!!  :D

Don't see one San Augustine guy on the list either. Maybe they qualified, just didn't make the top 8 in any event..... hmmm.... ::)
::) We are right where we want to be.  ;) I guarantee H-D beats that 17th ranked team and a few others on that list.  8)  ;) :-*
If they happen to meet San Augustine in the playoffs, HD will get 50 hung on them. Pretty sure Alto will do the same. West Hardin being ranked is a joke. They are just as slow as HD.
Maybe you never heard, but not to many years ago, Adrian Anderson from HD won State in the 100m and 200m, also H-D's sprint relay placed 2nd in State. So I guess H-D has a little speed sometimes. lol. Anderson also played tailback and now runs track for UTEP. 89Falcon is a joke. lol.
We all know about what HD had in the past. What they have now is slow. SA has more speed than any team in 1A and it is not close. SA will be winning the state track meet and that is nearly certain provided they are not hit with senior-itis. They will win every relay going away. West Sabine had a relay at the state meet last year and SA blew them out of the water. Tenaha got the same treatment. You are going to see what speed looks like if HD happens to get SA.
I'm not one to say that just because you are fast in track means your fast on the football field, or good on the football field for that matter, but where do you get this thought of track excellence for SA? They will win every relay going away? This is that same San Augustine that didn't even place high enough in their district to send their sprint relay team to the Region III meet? The same SA that didn't have one sprinter qualify for regionals much less state? Man, that's some bold words. I'm not saying they aren't fast, and surely not saying they aren't going to be good, but coming from a middle of the road district finish in track to winning every relay going away... that's impressive. Maybe they were just saving all their SPEED for football  ;)
HD did not win a playoff game that year. In 2006 HD lost to Groveton 45-34 and in 2007 lost again to Groveton 48-27. HD lost first half leads in both these bi-district games. Both years Groveton went on to be beaten in the next round by Alto, who won back to back state titles ('06-'07). In 2008 HD lost to Mart in the 2nd round (after a first round bye). Special teams and turnovers got HD in a hole in the 2nd quarter of that game and they could not dig their way out. They did hold Mart scoreless in the second half and only allowed a total of 219 yards to the Panthers that went to the state championship game that season. So no, HD did not win a playoff game in the seasons where they had their last really fast team. They finished 7-4, 7-4, and 8-3 those seasons. I think the whole point was that HD almost always has SPEED. If you've been to an HD game the last two or three years, you probably haven't seen much speed. Before that, HD has always had alot of speed. HD55's example was our 2007 and 2008 state runner up finishes in track, which included back to back 100m champ, one 200m champ, a 3rd 200m finisher, and back to back runner up finishes in the sprint (4x100) relay. This year's HD team will be fast again. They don't have one kid as fast as Anderson, but they have four or five that can go. I don't know if they will approach the the 42.41 unofficial best time the kids from '07 ran, or the state time of 42.80, but they will have speed this year. I'm just ready for the season to start. I'm not bragging about what Hull-Daisetta did a million years ago or acting like we are the kings of high-school football. I know that HD has a strong and very prideful tradition that has taken some lumps over the last 10 years or so. HD had two young coaches (Darrell Barbay and Joe Allen Slack) that were able to be moderately successful, but we not able to get the program back to where the community thinks it needs to be. Not saying anything against those guys, it just didn't work out perfectly, but more times then not, it doesn't. What I am saying, is that Hull-Daisetta has to win to prove itself once more. It's been 13 seasons since HD's last play-off win. Everyone that is doubting HD this year has every right to do so. That is probably rational thinking and a normal train of thought with the team they fielded last year, the outcome they had, returning talent etc.  I'm not gonna promise we'll win state or guarantee a deep playoff run. There's about 170 kids (boys and girls) in grades 9-12 at HD. With those kinds of numbers you cannot guarantee anything. Injuries, off-field issues, grades, move-outs and a number of other things that affect just a couple kids can affect the outcome of your entire season. I will say this though, with Coach Finney and what he's brought to the Bobcats, and with the kids that I've seen at strength and conditioning workouts, the sky is the limit for this team. Most talent I've seen at HD in 10+, and that's when HD was still 2A. They have to put it together, and that's why we play the games, but don't sleep on the Bobcats.

A unique experience, indeed.I can relate to the small-town football thing, because when West Sabine plays Hemphill the entire county shuts down. Kinda like when H-D plays West Hardin, you know? I cannot wait to tee it up Aug. 31st!!!!!!!
Great post. I have good memories of playing against West Sabine as a Bobcat, in the mid 90's. WS had some great athletes, like Juan Mason and Shane Moses. It was always a dog fight.
Marcus Horn could go too. That dude was a beast! I remember watching film on West Sabine and we realized that if he was getting the ball, he looked up while in his three-point stance in the backfield. If he wasn't getting the ball, his head would stay facing the ground...... It didnt' matter... even when we knew he was getting the ball, he was a hard to stop. And he had like 15 tackles at middle linebacker too. I watched some film of Desmond Lacy from last year, and he's a great player as well. Can't wait to see the numbers he puts up for West Sabine. HD could easily see West Sabine in the playoffs this year!!

With a few exceptions I have lived in East Texas for most of my life. I played little league football through high school and have been involved in football in some capacity for my adult life. As a boy in high school I was aware that there was a community/town somewhere around Liberty named Hull-Daisetta. I never heard or knew much about the town as they were considered insignificant. I was aware that they played football but did not know much beyond that. I always knew that the only significant team in the area was Liberty or to some extent Hardin-Jefferson. I wonder if anyone outside of Hull-Daisetta views Hull-Daisetta as some traditional football power? I know I sure dont.
I don't have a dog in this fight, but I would like to offer my thoughts. I grew up in and went to HS school in Shelby County in the 50's. We had all heard of Hull-Daisetta football. Sorry to say we had never heard of Huffman or Liberty. Jay Arnold put Liberty on the map for me when he played for UT in the 70's. Never hear of Huffman until the early 90'.  I worked internationally for years and ran across HD grads all over the world.
I think I acknowledged that HD was good back when most of the population was unborn or small children just like Harvard and Yale were National Title contenders. Huffman in the mid 80s was strong program with Greg Moore who at the time was the 7th leading rusher in state history and went on to play LB at TCU. The current issue is who thinks of football power when they think of HD? Most people not in West Hardin, Deweyville, Warren, etc think of an "automatic win" when they think of HD.
I'm from Hull-Daisetta so I am somewhat biased, but I have to think that this line is the most inaccurate, off-the wall, no truth whatsoever, laughable statement you have made on this board! (and I know that there are plenty that fall under this category to pick from when it comes to your statements) And don't worry, HD won't have any problem finishing above their Dave Campbell's last place prediction. It's not going to be pretty for HD's district this year when they face the Bobcats.

 23.
Just proud of our tradition. The pride, honor and tradition of H-D football= special. Wearing the red and black, under the friday night lights, in the cool Daisetta night air. So many memories, lining up next to HDBobcat9.
That is what it's all about 55. Great times, wonderful memories, and life long lessons. Gotta keep it going!! ThirdnLong, thanks for the kind words and support. You make some great points that are all dead on. I think Coach Finney and his staff will be two keys moving forward at HD. He knows how utilize all the talent he has. He's also instilling a work ethic that had been lacking for years. Good luck to the Lovelady Lions in DII this year. Wish y'all the best and see ya on the field Sept. 21st. Should be a great game!
