1. And I haven't been saying anything about Newton gonna be world beaters this year. They have some talent returning and moving up from JV, but in my mind they have got to step it up in attitude and want to to get all that talent can achieve. Saying that, I still don't think Kirbyville will be anywhere close to where they once were. And most assuredly will not be dominant in this district.

You wanna hear cocky? Kirbyville has been to the state title game twice, winning neither. Repeat, two trips - no wins. Newton has been there four times, winning three. Check the granite statues in front of the stadium in Newton. Repeat, four trips - three wins. Is that blank space on Hwy96 in front of the school where ya'll store your state losses? I saw Kirbyville's varsity and jr. varsity last year and there is little talent to build anything on. You cannot win with one good linebacker on defense and one running back on offense. And saying how good Kirbyville looks in practice is hysterically funny. They should "look good" against themselves.

Now u know im pretty honest about my kats and im just saying they lookin better than expected.  Im not predicting crazy thing here ok! Just after last year im glad to see much improvement in. the right direction.

Yes your correct i bet it is nice to drive by your sign out front and enjoy the list of newtons accomplishments im sure your grandfathers grandfathers grandfather enjoyed it too cause thats how long most of its been there.  Just sayin if the paints been painted over more times than your team has cheerleaders it might be time to let that go.  There might not be as much writing on the kirbyville sign but remember two things....one that paint is still fresh and two..the cats are getting ready for you!!!!

Fresh paint on getting beat means nothing against the last state champion trophy from this area in any class. I'm glad ya'll are getting all hyped up. No problem there. Talking like Kirbyville has always been dominant and the big dog on the block is crazy. Had a couple good years. Ok. But history tells a different story on being the best year in and year out.
You keep saying we didn't have no talent on our underclass men teams, you won't hear the end of it when them boy whoop Newton A$$

I was at the Newton/Kirbyville JV game last year when Newton started playing the second string players at the beginning of the second quarter. This is not fantasy, but reality. I saw very little talent that you continue to assure everyone is there. Kirbyville has 112 more students in high school than Newton and should be able to dominate us. Ain't happening! Those kids for Newton were also freshmen and sophomores and some of those are moving up to varsity this year. Gonna take more than a new defense to help Kirbyville. :o

5. 1. Newton
2. EC
3. Woodville
I don't think Kirbyville will be good enough this year to beat Woodville. Woodville has been putting a little better defense on the field the last couple years than in the past. Kirbyville has a long way to go to reach where they were a couple years ago. Then Anahuac, Kountze, Hardin, and Warren.
6. A guy from Newton named Jimmy Walker (early '70's). Went to Texas and played for Darrell Royal. Coach Barbay wouldn't hesitate when asked who was the best he ever coached and would answer Jimmy Walker. Didn't have much surounding him and done it mostly on his own. Paved the way for Anthony Byerly. Also Bubba Bean from Kirbyville. Old time run over you and keep churning. Great backs.
7. I've seen a lot of Newton teams over the years ranked in the top 5 that did not rise to the occasion. This years team is an unknown in my opinion. They are going to have to prove themselves over the season for me to get excited. A lot of talent returning and moving up, but I'm not sure that will offset the weaknesses I saw last year. Some of the killer instinct and never give up of Newton teams in the past was missing and that is gonna have to resurface for them to make a legit run at another state title. Tackling ability, hustle all over the field instead of standing and watching are a couple more intangibles. They get team attitude like years past and lookout, but until then......
8. I like to think of a winning tradition like grandma's sour dough starter. If you don't maintain it, it dies. When it dies the only thing you can do is start over. A lot of programs have had past success and deserve the accolades of having done it. But to ride on the past does nothing to keep the tradition alive. It has to be nutured and fed with wins and championships. And like grandma's starter, everybody's is a little different.
9. Is the new DC at Kirbyville bringing a new defensive scheme also or or will he be calling the defense from scheme used last year? I would think this might have a big effect on how efficent they are on defense. This district definately has some offensive players that can attack a defense.

Kville second place??  ???

Do they know something we don't?
that's what I'm thinking...2nd or 3rd, but who knows?
I wouldn't put a lot of faith in anything they "know". They rank Newton 2nd in state and ahead of Tatum, yet pick Tatum over Newton in the regional finals. Personally I don't think Newton is that caliber team to be ranked 2nd and I also don't think Kirbyville will be second in district. From what I saw last year, EC is head and shoulders above Kirbyville. Kirbyville dropped in the realignment back to 2A, but dropped into a hornets nest of a district. Should be an interesting year for everybody.
11. What about Tim Simmons? There are a few more also. The team last year lacked tackling skills and strength. Maybe offseason can help with strength, but tackling skills comes from want to and practice and I did not see that last year. Saw lots of standing in the middle of the field with hands on hips watching down field. Can't play at a high level like that. For years Newton as a team had over the top want to. That's what pulled them through a lot of wins over other teams with more skill. Remember the games with Ozen for example? This was something missing the last few years. I think WT is the man to put it back up where it needs to be, but it will take more time and experience on the field. No way legit #2. And what do you expect the coaches to say? Be realistic in assessing the team or ask those folks from EC. They can tell you about Newton. JMHO
12. Kirbyville may be ready to play, but I didn't see a lot of talent to play last year. The JV and the varsity had kids wanting to play and that's good, but to stay competitive there's got to be a certain amount of talent mixed with the want. Kirbyville has a lot fewer talented players to put on the field than in years past. This in no way means they are gonna lay down and be a door mat and I'm not saying they will. As the year progresses I'm sure the coaching staff will have them playing better and better, but where they'll wind up in district I think is still middle of the pack. Good luck to the Cats and their fans on reentering the 2A ranks. Have a good year and prove me wrong!

So this is public warning on anyone bashing this man who is putting himself out there and fulfilling a dream of his.

The ultimate in American journalism. I don't have a dog in the hunt but, I believe this was also the view point of someone named Adolf. This sadly brings tears to my American eyes. Maybe I don't like the color socks he wears, is this bashing by your definition? Or only if I say on here I don't like them. Let's be sure to keep any other opinion that don't meet your criteria stuffed under the bed. I don't know coach Smalley and absolutely do wish him the best.
