Friday night 7:30 in Center, Texas to watch Newton vs Jefferson. My wife spent the past weekend in Jefferson and she said she did absolutely no trash talking or spying! I thought about making her sleep on the porch Sunday night. Thought about it. ;D

Newton has a chance to do well this year in the playoffs, but they also have a lot of sophomores playing in key areas that can be really good at times and of course make dumb young mistakes at times. If they continue to mature, who knows how far they can go. Jefferson first. This should be a good game to gauge by. Newton by 2 touchdowns. Go Eagles!!!

Right now they have a better chance than most in the 3A playoffs to win it all. But it always takes luck in the playoffs at some point and no one can predict luck.

I believe the 1998 Newton team was the last 3A state champion from this area and was probably the best Newton ever produced, but I don't think they could hang with this years Coldspring bunch. They seem to dominate, but the playoffs is when it counts.

The guy is young and came into a a place that has had a revolving door on it for years and done nothing but turn the program around and win plus going to the playoffs. I would say that Jasper should be very excited about this hire and try to keep him. Seems like he's done a heck of a job to me. Got the parents back in the stands and off the coaches back and the kids to believe in his system all in one year and that was no small task. What more could you want from a coach?

WT said on the coaches show last night he thought Center unless they were in the playoffs. They made the playoffs. Playing in Carthage probably will be a Saturday game? I like that better than a Thursday game anywhere.

This Eagle team has given me reason to increase my blood pressure medication! Young with talent, but commit inexperienced dumb mistakes at times and we go from flying high to a collective sigh in the stands. But that is what makes high school football so much fun to watch! And the tradition continues, 18 straight years in the playoffs! I hope to be able to see the Kats play in the playoffs. Go take care of business in Center!

Kirbyville's year comes down to, win this one game and start over at 0-0 in the playoffs where anything can happen. Quite a year for the Wildcats. Confidence and never quit Kats. I say Kats by 7. 34-27.

I think a lot of you are missing the point. Just because you can, should you? Does it make you a better person or athlete if you score all you can against an inferior opponent? No, it doesn't. Do you improve as a team running the score up on an easy opponent? No, you don't improve. You get better by playing against quality opponents and having to work at beating them. The second and third string may benefit some if they have to work at scoring, if they don't, same answer. You only get better by playing against equal or better talent. Running up the score doesn't help anything, if it is done solely because you can. Of course if you don't know the difference between being a winner and being a bully, this discussion is moot. Thanks for the clarification.

I think Newton's passing game carries them past Anahuac and the defense will stand tough. Darrell's Panthers may sit at home this year during the playoffs. Newton 34 Anahuac 18.

I picked Jasper over Kirbyville last week not out of ill will, but I thought Jasper was playing a little better ball. Kirbyville surprised me at making it closer than I thought it would be. I've not seen them since the second week of the season. That says to me that Kirbyville is finding their game at the right time of the year. They should continue to play hard each week with the playoffs in their sight. Don't pay attention to people like me that might have had some doubt and bring everything you got. I think you have a real good chance to win out the rest of the regular season and then everyone is 0-0 in the playoffs. Kirbyville team character is not quitting. Play hard and take it to Diboll. This was something Coach Barbay would have never let happen while he was alive. He did not want accolades and monuments to himself, only to those kids he coached. A very deserved recognition. He was the 4th winningest coach in Texas High School history, and all those wins came at Newton. It is an outstanding monument with different pictures of Curtis on three sides with quotes you could always hear him say. If he was still alive though, I think he would have wanted the money to go to the track with. He loved the horses also. :) The monument is located on Barbay Way at Singletary Stadium at the main entrance to Barbay Field next to the State Championships Markers. Everyone should check it out. Pretty cool.
