2. Small school I know, but the 1998 Newton Eagle team was IMO the best Newton ever produced and we've had many. Went DII in 3A and was the 5th smallest school in all of 3A. Beat Daingerfield in the state title game 21-0. Excellent defense, rushing, and passing game as well as all out team speed. Unsung Josh Harrell was the nose guard and disrupted the handoff from the opposing QB on numerous times and caused fumbles on the exchange. That was Coach Barbay's first title as head coach. It was a great ride. :)
  3. In Newton the economic impact has probably shown more than other towns. We were absolutely locked into the timber industry and it is gone now. Along with it went jobs and money. The fair weather fans have been there for years, not just the last couple. A long time ago Coach Barbay said "#@** won't nobody wear a purple hat til the playoffs" and he was right. Consistently winning has bred a fan base that a lot of them see as a social event and not a sports event. It's more about being seen than being a fan. It's sad, because Newton only has football and it's success to be extremely proud.

  5. I don't think anyone knows what classification Kirbyville will be in. The numbers the UIL use change every realignment. For as saying Kirbyville needs to be in 2A, IMO that is bull. The need is to develop a top performing program with the new coach leading the way. Once this is accomplished Kirbyville can again be competitive with 3A or 2A. ;)
  6. This weekend is Homecoming for the Newton Eagles and on Sunday at 1:30pm there will be a dedication of the Curtis Barbay Memorial at the football field. The memorial will be located adjacent to the State Champion Markers at the main entrance to the field. Many of Coach Barbays family will be there and I hope a very large crowd of extended family in players that played for him in his many years at Newton. Everyone is invited to come and join honoring one of East Texas greatest coaching legends.

Thankfully, the lopsided predictions ARE NOT coming from EC people. Others from Buna, Newton, and other such places are putting them out there. EC is staying grounded and focused.  8)

Once again chiding those that at least will make a prediction (like true fans) instead of laying back in the shadows and hiding until after the fact and come out like they knew it all the time. 8)
  8. I don't think either of us is in a position to truly know the right question. We're not at every practice and in every huddle and what appears to us from the bleachers a lot of times is not even what the coach or players were trying to accomplish. Right now Kirbyville needs a good old dose of confidence IMO, which I think they are going to start getting this week. Then both of us will be happy and glad we suggested all the right moves! ;) I'm pulling for them and their coach.

No prob...You can run up and down the football field all night, gaining yardage...But if you don't cross the goal line it don't matter..Stats don't win games,Points do... ;)
that's our problem....we move the ball good till the red zone, but can't punch it in :-[
If #33 got the ball more the win/loss column would look different IMO...But I'm just a fan,not the Coach... :)

I don’t think you need to be a coach to observe the obvious. My question would be why don’t the people that get paid to notice things seem to be able to. For instance

Haywood and Smith are both good backs, but they both need a little room to run and with our line leaking like a sieve at this point its just not happening. After the game I spoke to one of them and he said as soon as he touches the ball he is getting killed. Almost every play last week WOS runners had their hand on the shoulder of a lead blocker from one end of the field to the other. If we can not get that kind of blocking then find a way to get them out in the open because either one of them is more than capable of moving the ball. Get them some wiggle room and see what happens.

Returning kicks is an art form as far as I am concerned and once a player gets the dropsys it becomes a mental issue some players just cant handle. Sexton has not muffed one yet. He picks one off the ground in full stride and runs with conviction. Why would you want anyone but him returning your kicks unless they re hiding someone we haven’t seen yet. If a player drops one pat him on the butt and tell him it's OK. If he drops 3 you have an issue.

#33 is almost always good for 5 yards even if its obvious its going to him. So why is it we end up running some off tackle junk or corner to corner, east to west even when a first down is close. Why is it when he gets it in the red zone they pull him and change things up????Up the middle with Lil Will aint fancy but like my Daddy told me eager beat pretty every time. Make them try to stop him and use the threat of him to open up the pass.

Can someone tell me if the UIL still allows you to throw the ball less than 30 yards. If there is a rule against it I would sure like to know about it and if there isn’t the coaches sure need to know about it. It makes for a great highlight clip hauling one in surrounded by coverage but the outcome more likely than not is a wasted down or an interception.

If you only do two things right you can win just about any game. BLOCKING AND TACKLING. Standing in someones way is not blocking and throwing your shoulder at someones feet is not tackling.

A few air raids will fix almost any penalty problem.

To me its as simple as do what works until they stop you. Don’t continue to do what does not work. That is going to change every game against every team.

No I am not a coach but I think this is reflective of what the majority of the fans are seeing. I support this team and I feel for the players who have it in them to be play makers and have not been able to. The Cats have the tools and if the right adjustments are made they will be fine in district. I know my opinion doesnt mean squat and the coach is going to do what he feels is best. I am just voicing what I see and the best part is I dont get fired if I am wrong just smited.

Now this is funny. All the answers to none of the right questions.

I wouldn't pencil in Newton so fast if they can't handle ellusive backs because Woodville also has on in the form of Trent Daniels, he went for 283 yards and 3 TD's last week.
Your right. Newton tackled like little girls against EC. But I think a week of WT's ire will change that. ;D

I'm simply calling you what you are, a cyber bully. You make no kind of predictions about your team yet want to be the first to jump in after the fact and spout off about the people that do believe in their team. We all know the predictions on here are nothing but personal feelings. You seem to slime around and wait until things have happened to jump up and berate everyone else about doing something you don't have the guts to do. Being one of the few that don't participate in rykerx's picks don't qualify you to talk down to those of us that do.

I don't hold anything against the EC coaches, kids, or true fans. But you I have a problem with, not because your from EC but because you lack social skills and want to belittle all those around you, hence a bully. I've stood up to bullies all my life and your just another in that line. Over and out would be too good to be true.
I didn't hurl all the insults, and I didn't call anyone "simple minded idiots". I know you are in a world of hurt right now, and since your judgement is likely off, I have tolerated your crazed ramblings and threats so far. For your mental health, JUST LET IT GO. It really is the best thing to do. Peace.
Threats? I've not made the first threat. I've simply pointed out what I thought was the shortcomings in your analyzations after the fact. And I still say their true. I've not defended all the insults hurled by either side about the communities. I don't think they were right. Neither was your jumping on here and repeating them as well as reverting to an assault on our ex coach that you have done for years AFTER the game. It's easy to appear intelligent after the fact. World of hurt? I've been a Newton fan long enough to know the season don't hinge on one loss before the playoffs. Here's a prediction; Newton will be in the playoffs and that's when the second season starts. Give peace a chance. John Lennon.

Hey, it's the truth I believe. Besides, I can slap my brother up side his head all day, but don't let somebody outside the family try it! ;D Kirbyville knows how to win and will get their chance this Friday. Good luck.
