Kirbyville's program has come way to far to allow one kid to upset the cart. Irvine may have been good last year, but he would need to prove himself THIS year, not to outsiders but to his teammates. He missed all the hard work days, then going to come in and be the hero? What would that say to all the ones that have been there?
Idk the story but he is a kid...probably not his choices where he is living.
I'm not saying it was his "choice", but if it happens it still has the same effect.

Newton tuff @ home Newton by 14

Yea they are, but i believe Coach Neece will be moving ALL the underclassman up and Burman Irvine should be enrolling back in Kirbyville High School tomorrow :)
unless he is bringing an offensive and defensive line with him he might just wanna stay where he is.
If Coach Neece is the coach I think he is, Irvine won't be seeing any action soon. He has not put in the work or time with the team to justify suiting out. Later in the year, maybe then, not now. He does not deserve to suit up now, IMO. He's not part of the team.
3. Newton is young this year and we've got DII numbers and should be in DIIAA and we have a new coach and we have some injuries and, and ........... wait a minute Newton ain't Kirbyville and have never wanted to be!!! Bring Kirbyville and all their excuses on. Newton will be ready and play Newton type football. Newton by 14. 8) The rivalry continues!!! ;)
4. I'm not disagreeing with ryker, but tradition sometimes is definitely built on expectations. The tradition at Newton is to play hard and to win, no matter who you play. This of course does not always happen. But when kids grow up watching their kin folks, neighbors, or people they look up to play hard AND win, it breeds an atmosphere of not wanting to lose and playing hard to make sure that don't happen. I think all the glory of winning is great, but the shadow of losing is what drives the tradition at Newton. So line up Kirbyville and bang heads with the burning desire to do what ever it takes to win. No excuses. Get after Cold-Springs.

W.T. picked up right where Barbay left off!

Thank you, W.T.!    ;)                ;D ;D ;D

C'mon bucfan, Barbay or WT neither one has named East Chambers as being a good team or not. WT said nothing and your upset and Barbay said "we hadn't played anybody any good" after beating East Chambers 55 to nearly nothing in the playoffs several years ago. You misquoted Barbay then and you still haven't got it straight. Get over it. EC came to Newton last year the week of Coach Barbay's funeral and Hank Jones limped his way, with heart, to a victory. Congrats, but don't expect EC to be glorified in Newton. Ain't gonna happen.
7. Can anyone tell me how many football head coaching changes Kountze has had since 1973? Not their names just a number. This program (and the kids aren't to blame) has not been very successful on the field. This is a fact. If stating this label's me a "hater"(I'm not real sure what that is") then so be it. Bearcat you still cannot demand respect for this program. I see the responses you have made and the way you present them as demanding respect without proof of why anyone should give any respect to the Kountze football program. Hope is one thing, but respect ain't based on hope. I hope Kountze has a great year. I respect Mr. Garrity for his service and what that means to all Americans. It allows me to get on this board and be as freely stupid as I desire. I salute him!
8. Anticipation of the opening of this year's football season has been building and also a renewed excitement in Newton . It's been a long time since Newton fans didn't know what to expect from the football team but hard work and a winner's heart with a few scat plays thrown in that were ran 500 different ways. WT knows about these things and knows about that winning tradition and expectations he has inherited and helped nurture for so many years, plus his respect and admiration for Coach Barbay I don't think will allow him to not succeed. Good luck to WT and HIS Newton Eagle Football team! Bring them Kirbyville Wildcats on! ;D That one is for you rykerx. :D
9. In 1975 Newton had a brand new head Coach that was 0-0 in his career. After 3 State Championship game appearances with 2 wins and 300+ wins overall, that era has ended. Newton has a new head Coach with a 0-0 career record and a new era starts tonight with a scrimmage with Hemphill. W.T. Johnston has some big shoes to fill, but I think he's up to the task. I think Coach Barbay will be smiling as he looks down tonight and sees scat right and scat left plus a few new wrinkles. May all involved be safe. Go Eagles!  :)

Coach Valastro is a great coach but I am questioning whether this is the right fit at Galveston Ball. He has never coached at a school with the demographics like Galveston Ball. La Grange and EC are much different communities and different type of kids.
He will have to adjust his ways or he will get run out of town before he can establish a winning program.

After hearing from WOSgrad that the reference to the stadium in the past has been "The Rock", maybe some of the residents need to be "run out of town" for not knowing this.  ;D
11. Kountze has to earn the respect that you are demanding. Your post (both of them) shows how much you don't know. You can not demand respect for a program based on possibilities and the wants of the community. It's good to want to improve and to strive for it, but until that translates into an improved program both on and off the field, your not going to get any respect. Ten years ago the good people of Kirbyville were in the same boat as Kountze. No respect for the program, no matter how much they wanted it. A good coach and major improvements to the program and a couple trips to the state championship game and they earned every bit of respect they now enjoy. Let's hope this might be in the future for the Lions.

Sulphur vs LaGrange in the mid 70s...I was about 7 or 8yrs old...I caught one of the little footballs the cheerleaders throw to the crowd..but the ones I remember most was watching Anthony Byrley(sp?) in Newton in the early 80's, they got knocked out in the playoffs in a OT game.

The Newton game was against Cameron Yoe and it was before overtime games were played. The teams were tied with the score, tied with penetrations, and Cameron Yoe advanced on having one more first down than Newton. A heart breaker if you were a Newton fan.
