Great post both of you guys. I played against coach Barbay and the Newton Eagles. Many years after I graduated I officiated a subvarsity game in Newton. I talked to coach Barbay, he remembered me and I asked him " coach" how do you win year in year out? His reply was "Keith, we still do things the old school way here in Newton. I will never forget that, he was right. I will miss you coach.

Old School? In 1968 I was in the 8th grade and had only known Coach Barbay a few days. We were doing leg lifts (the old kind of raising your feet and holding for a 10 count) before practice and just as I raised my legs he stepped up on my stomach with both feet and stood there for 8 counts. I had 7 older brothers and sisters and had mastered the never show fear deal and didn't outside, but I was screaming inside. Lol And the rest is history as they say. :D
  2. I have an empty feeling in my stomach that I can't shake. The tragic loss of a young QB followed by the untimely death of the grand old leader of my beloved Newton Eagles. Newton's longtime (55+ years) home PA announcer Sam Collins retired just two weeks ago also. I simply feel lost. I have looked forward with great enthusiasm each fall since 1967, when I started playing the game in the seventh grade, to the sounds, sights, and smells of of each football season. My son and I both played for Coach Barbay as well as had every home game called by Sam Collins for both of us. I know the season will continue and there can always be new traditions and other seasons, but right now I just have this empty feeling. I was talking with my son yesterday and we got to wondering how many peoples lives have been touched by these three folks. After I hung up the phone I said a little prayer just thanking God for being given such an opportunity for all these years. The feeling in my stomach will fade I got to believe, just not today.

Buna will be ready to play a hard fought game, defensive line is strong. Buna defensive tackle #63 is a awesome player.

Buna defense has not seen the likes of Newton's offense. Newton stumbled badly against Kirbyville, on both sides of the ball, but I don't think Buna is Kirbyville. It's going to be a track meet. ;)
  4. I was surprised by the play of Silsbee last week in Newton. Spread hit on a few plays but was not effective consistently. Defense could not stop the running game of Newton and was also suspect on passes. Jasper will have their work cut out for them, but Silsbee's homecoming could be a disappointment for the home team unless they bring it together this week. JMO. Silsbee by less than 3.

Hardin has been in the playoffs just as many times in any sport as you guys the past 10 years(in 2a and 3a).
Incorrect. Hardin does not have a 15 year playoff streak like EC currently does. Hardin didn't make the playoffs last year.

Newton trumps both of you! :D :D :D

This is like being on the playground at recess in the third grade, my dad can beat up your dad, no he can't either. Anahuac has improved as a team and program over where they used to be. People seem to think athletes populate one school district and are banned or something in others. This is a ridiculous statement. Proper training and motivation are the two biggest differences between like size schools in most years. Newton has had a program that they have adhered to for many years and it has proven that it works. Newton's coach Barbay always mixes and matches lineups during the first few games hunting the best way to build a team, not build stars, and this has proven to be very effective. Sometimes early on lineups don't work. Anahuac's coach Barbay has seen this strategy his entire life and I would assume in some way emulates it. On the night of October 29 we should see two good programs go at it. I think my Eagles will be ready by then and on track to improving play week in and week out. I imagine Anahuac will be doing the same. Good luck to both squads.

    Well said and very true...

    Now, parking lot dude!!!! ;D
Im just going by who they play and who Newton has played in the past they just don't match up .Anahuac has talent that rivals teams like Buna East chambers. I really dont understand why some people are so fake on here . Ive seen Anahuac play they have athletes but not near as many as a Newton or Kville do year in and year out. Cant wait to see the game but I just dont think the outcome will be that great
Seeming to express an overall knowledge without acounting does nothing to bolster your case. Anahuac has not had the coach long enough for seventh and eighth graders to come through the system such as Kirbyville and Newton that you claim have superior athletes. Your year in and year out theory don't wash. There's a reason and it ain't breeding. Kirbyville didn't have them prior to Alverez. Newton didn't have them prior to Thompson(pre 1968).

  10. Anytime you start having multiple backs racking up big yards, those kids have talent no doubt, but I guarantee they are not doing by themselves. There are some linemen that are doing their job to a high degree involved. Everyone sees the kid with the ball cross the goal line and say ain't he great. Very few see the reason why he crossed it back down the field.

Where are the Newton posters.. ???
I been workin' cows. If Newton's defense can take one more step this week in practice, Silsbee will be in trouble. But, that is a big if (Lord I'm begining to sound like some Kirbyville fans lol :D). Newton has yet to establish who they are as far as team chemistry. Got to get more consistent on both sides of the ball. I'm sticking with Newton by 3.
