Captain Obvious says... On defense, PN-G has decent size along the front seven and the Indians can go toe-to-toe with anyone stopping the run between the hash marks. When Vidor gashed PN-G for big yards, it sounded like a play that got Quirante or Hecklon to the edges [didn't see the game]. Protecting the edges and containing PAM's speed is a concern...big concern. This game could be a repeat of Angleton v. PN-G, where Angleton ran the ball at will on the Indians...Angleton's RB got to the edge and PN-G did not have an answer. The Indians have to try and keep PAM's RB in the middle of the field where there is help to get him down. The Indians are size-challenged in the secondary. Not much you can do about it besides play hard and use all of the talent God has given you. The Indians have to keep everything in front of them and get as many defenders to the ball as possible. Easier said than done. Do not get beat deep. Make PAM march down the field. If they do that and score, then tip your hat to them and get ready for the next series. On offense, PN-G has to protect the ball...and protect Roschon Johnson when he is looking downfield. PN-G has to keep PAM out of the backfield. Spread out the Titans and create as many running lanes as possible. When you have a shot to throw it downfield, do it. If Coach Faircloth has saved any tricks, i.e., fake punts, swinging gate, a play we have never seen before, the PAM game may be time to give it a shot in the right circumstances. Do whatever you have to do to create momentum. Looking forward to seeing this game at Memorial Stadium. Lots of memories watching PN-G play Thomas Jefferson and Lincoln during the 1970s and 1980s at Memorial Stadium. Go Indians. Peace.

+1 Not sure why everyone is jumping on the Vidor bandwagon. I don't see a Montana Quirante on the team. The team to watch is Central. They will have a big, fast, and experienced defense. It may not matter what they have on offense because they will have the ability to shut people down and win games 3-0, 7-0, 10-7, etc. Coach Foreman may finally start using some of the coaching experience he gained at WO-S, i.e., defense first, control the ball and clock, and add up the score at the end. Good job Vidor...now you will have a nice view of the final score when PN-G beats you in Vidor...last season's 50-7 PN-G win would look good on that jumbotron. I'm guessing Nederland fans had the same first thought re: Ned @ Vidor and your new jumbotron. Seriously, nice job VISD. Go Indians. Peace. -
Off topic...slightly off topic...UH-alum here (Class of 1994)...tell me about former UT RB Duke Catalon (spelling?). He is penciled in as one of the Coogs RBs coming out of spring practice and I like what I have read about him, i.e., size, speed, toughness. Why did he leave Austin? I know Texas has a stable of talent, but DC was highly regarded out of HS, and Texas seemed to be a good fit for him, i.e., running the ball downhill. What sayeth the UT faithful about the DC? We need to find a strong RB to run between the tackles to replace Kenneth Farrow, who was a tough kid that always found a way to get us the extra yard needed and he took care of the football...is DC our guy to replace Kenneth Farrow? Thanks in advance. Go Indians (PN-G) and Coogs (UH). Peace.

It was a good game. A tad chilly, but nice weather. Very happy for UH to play well...impressed with Temple's size...they have size all over the field...easy to see how they played well vs. Penn State and ND. Houston hung tough in the trenches, did not give up the big play on defense, and thank you Lord for Greg Ward, Jr. What a QB! He is not just a running QB or "athlete" playing QB...he is a QB who can read defenses, throw the ball all over the yard, and of course, he can create something out of nothing with his amazing feet...he has eyes in the back of his head...and he just makes plays! Love his toughness. Those 3 FR on the OL are getting better each day...but it helps, GWJr can buy time to throw or just take off! How about PA's own, Elandon Roberts? Tough as nails, smart, and a great kid. He does not know my kids from Adam or Eve, but he gave them a hug in the stadium entrance walk-through. Happy he is doing well. If PAM needs a role model from college, they should ask Elandon Roberts to speak to kids. Hell, I wish he would go to PN-G and tell his story about EARNING his spot at UH...desire...perseverance...toughness...he is our GWJr on defense. Go Elandon Roberts. Go Coogs. P.S. Cameron Malveaux from HF is a MAN, too. SETX should be proud of him. He will be in the NFL. He has the size...has huge hands...should be a good DE in the NFL. I did not see him before or after the game today...left during the trophy presentation due to cold kids...but saw him in pregame warm-ups during drills. Big agile young man. Peace.

It has worked well for PN-G when a coach/son tandem came through The Reservation: Bum Phillips/Wade Phillips 1965 Doug Ethridge/Richy Ethridge 1975-1976 [State Championship in '75 and Semi-Finals in '76] Mike Long/Dustin Long 1997-1999 [Bi-District or Area Round in '98 and State Finalist in '99] Matt Burnett/Clint Burnett [the year escapes me, but they made a playoff run and great father/son memories] I'm ready for Coach Faircloth to guide his son through our program. Across the tracks over at the other school, the Spell and Barrow families had some success. TJ-ex Todd Dodge did well with his son, Riley. Art and Kendall Briles at Stephenville. The Detmer family. Joe, Kenny, and Little Joe Washington had success at PA Lincoln. Coach Willie Ray Smith, Bubba and Tody Smith were the kings of Beaumont football during the 1960s. Coaching your son can be done. I haven't walked in those shoes, but it seems to me they all have a strong family bond that will last forever, with or without football. All of those coaches were damn good, too...disciplined men who built or were part of great programs.

Tread lightly re Ned...back to back DCs speaks more loudly than does spring football or 7 on 7...I'm a proud PN-G Indian through and through, but I prefer hardware vs. running around in the spring and summer in socks and jocks...I agree 7 on 7 is a good thing...it allows QBs, RBs, WRs, and DBs to compete...I hope the development from spring and summer translates into good things for the Indians in the fall of 2013. The next three years should be good for PN-G...we should be back in the business of collecting hardware for the trophy cases. Go Indians. Peace. -

Montana Quirante Highlights 2012-2013/Final RMG Videos
1989NDN replied to Ironman63's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Vidor will be hard pressed to replace MQ on both sides of the ball. Like it or not, MQ made the Pirate offense go and he was equally important on defense. It was no coincidence that one of Vidor's best snapshots of success during four consecutive seasons happened while MQ played at VHS. 2009: 7-4 2010: 2-8 2011: 10-3 2012: 9-2 Coach Matthews would probably be the first to tell you, MQ was the difference maker. Coach Matthews has 68 Ws and 75 Ls in 14 seasons...some would argue that is below average...but, the point is, that record could be worse...a lot of those Ws were thanks to MQ. Coach Matthews does deserve a ton of credit for selecting an offense that maximizes the talent and discipline that VHS kids bring to the table. And that mixture of talent and discipline is what made MQ very good. Losing him will cause a drop-off in Ws and Ls. That is not say Vidor's program will tank...but, it will not be smooth sailing to another 9-2 or 10-3 season. There may be more 2-8 seasons on the horizon. All programs have cyclical success. Life after Dustin Long at PN-G had its bumps. PAM after Jammal Charles had a couple of mediocre seasons. Central post-Robert Mitchell had its ups and downs. Nederland has been the most consistent, but even they have had so-so seasons relative to some of their playoff runs. Vidor fans, MQ was a very good HS player...it will be interesting to see how that Wing-T offense goes without a game manager like MQ handling the ball. We'll see. And, no, the Texas State 4A championship is not rightfully Vidor's trophy. In all of those great wins by MQ, he only beat PN-G and Ned 1x each. Matthews has only defeated PN-G 3x. I'll take a 11-3 record. :) Go Indians. Peace. -
Various news outlets are reporting that UH's Guy V. Lewis will be elected to the HOF. An official announcement is expected next week in Atlanta. This is long overdue. 30 years as a head coach 592 career wins Five NCAA Final Four appearances Two NCAA Final appearances Three 30-plus-win seasons 4 conference championships Produced 10 first round NBA draft selections, and 29 NBA players in total Coached 3 of the NBA's 50-Greatest Players (Olajuwon, Drexler, Hayes) Winning Coach of the Game of the Century vs. UCLA in the Astrodome Named National Coach of the Year in 1968, and again in 1983 Coach of four Southwest Conference Tournament champions—1978, 1981, 1983 and 1984 College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007 A lot of people behind the scenes have advocated for Coach Lewis to be inducted into the Basketball HOF...including Bobby Knight, Lamar's Pat Knight, and Port Arthur's Bob West. Congratulations to Coach Guy V. Peace.

I remember back in the day when PA Lincoln was beat by PNG :o [/quote] Off topic...reply to earlier post...and random thoughts... I don't believe PN-G ever beat PA Lincoln. It did not happen as far back as I can remember...and my memory goes back to 1974. Coach Don Bryson had some decent teams at PN-G with Monte Wainwright, the Westbrook brothers (Steve, Greg, and Brad), and with Bobby Straface, but I do not remember the Indians ever upsetting the Bees. We came close in 1988-1989 at the gym on The Reservation, but Lincoln's B.J. Tyler, Ronald Campbell, Kelvin McKyer, and Marlon Jackson pulled out a 1 or 2-point win. The Bees won district, pressed teams into defeat during the playoffs, and they won another state championship. The Bees won back-to-back state trophies in 1988-1989. They were dominant. B.J. Tyler was a man among boys and Lincoln had a deep bench of 6'4" to 6'6" guys that played "in your jock" suffocating defense. PN-G kept things close with a slow pace of play, 6'1" SG Bobby Straface hitting big shots, and 6'9" Michael Jeter playing great defense and battling Ronald Campbell on the glass...but, Lincoln's depth and B.J. Tyler were too much to handle. Does anyone remember PN-G beating PA Lincoln? If so, what year was it? Anyone remember when old Beaumont French, BC-P, Hebert, and Lincoln went back and forth from about 1977-1981 or 1982? No break-away rims back then...dunks would shake the backboards for what seemed like 3 or 4 minutes. Back on topic.... Go Indians. Peace.

Beaumont ISD posts opening for Central football
1989NDN replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
No idea if he is interested, but what about Coach Frank Middleton? He's played well at every level of football, he has the ability to communicate with today's athletes and establish a rapport, he has played and coached the OL, which is a football team's foundation, and he is a role model and local product of BISD. Is he ready for a chance as a HC? I know he is young (maybe late 30s or early 40s), but maybe it's his time. Might be a good find...a diamond in the rough that is ready to shine. Everywhere he has coached has had some success. I'd think with his playing and coaching connections, he would have a shot at putting together a good staff. Or, will his ties to WB keep him from consideration at Central? -
I only saw MQ play when he played against PN-G...true, he might be a tad thin in stature for college football, but that kid had a nose for finding the football on defense...and he was not afraid to stick his helmet into the middle of a collision...I know he was a fantastic QB for Vidor, he took care of the ball, managed the slot-T and got the ball to the right RB at the right time, and he ran for a lot of tough yards, but it was his play on Vidor's defense that impressed me more...he just had a knack for being a very good LB...he had good instincts, he could shed blockers, and he would hit you...if I had a vote for the WRS award, MQ would be strong candidate for the defensive award...not a knock on the WO-S or Nederland kids...also very good...on offense, it's hard to overlook what the QB did at PAM, what Ned's RB did, or what Ned's QB did managing his offense and throwing for a lot of yards in big games...I'd lean to the PAM QB. Go Indians. Peace.

I, for one, am relieved. Bob West's article in the PA News answered my questions. Brandon Faircloth is a terrific head football coach, he's an even better man and leader of young men at PN-G, and I am proud that he is leading my alma mater's sports programs for boys. Very happy to read that he, his wife, and children are happy to be at PN-GISD. We need to get the indoor practice facility built and continue investing in our teachers, students, school buildings, and facilities. A high quality or top tier education and solid extracurricular activities programs can go hand-in-hand. 2012 is in the rear view mirror. It is time to build towards success in 2013, 2014, and beyond (and, let's tighten up that defense while we're at it ;D). We are PN-G. Go Indians. Peace.

AGF - I'm no Nederland fan, but I'll say this...unless Georgetown kidnaps Delbert Spell (Nederland's DC), your team is in for a battle. The man has seen it all in 40+ years of coaching, he can coach Xs and Os on defense, and he's got a group of kids this year that has some talent and chemistry. Nederland should have the audacity to show up and play...they've earned the right to do so. They can play some defense. Ask Pearland Dawson.
-
He is every bit as good as a LB as he is a QB...he is the 20-4A MVP...tough runner, good decision maker, and he took care of the football for the Vidor Wing-T. More impressive is his play on defense...he had a nose for finding the football and sticking his helmet in the middle of the collision. Take pictures of him Vidor. It will be long time before another one like him comes through the program. He carried Vidor to amazing seasons in 2011 and 2012. A very good kid/athlete. Go Indians. Peace.

NEDERLAND AT VIDOR BROADCAST/Nederland wins 20-13!!!
1989NDN replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Ned 20 Vidor 6 Good night Vidor...you will not score 14 points in the 4Q running the slot-T vs. Nederland. The 20-4A district championship will come down to Nederland v. Ozen. -
1979: WOS 28 PN-G 24...as described by marshman...great game...PN-G had 2 or 3 chances on the last drive to throw the ball in the end zone, but it was not meant to be for Ethridge's Indians. 1982 or 1983: PN-G 17 WO-S 14...great defensive battle all night long...Denny Duhon's 4Q FG wins the game for PN-G. 1989: WO-S 25 PN-G 20...Danny Malone's Indians pull out all the stops with a throwback screen on a kickoff return, a fake punt, and a swinging gate pass to the fullback for a TD...but WO-S won the game with a long bomb late in the 4Q...largest crowd I've ever seen at old Mustang Stadium...standing room only and fans walked away exhuasted...both teams played their collective rear-ends off. 1992: PN-G 14 WO-S 13...Mustangs get a late 4Q score and go for two and the W...the runner lost the ball at the goal line during the 2-point try and PN-G recovered...Referees conferred and said it didn't matter because only the Mustang ball carrier could recover the ball in the endzone and he clearly did not recover it...an Indian defender and Mustang OL were tied up for the ball...Hooks went crazy, Indian fans booed him...and then finally PN-G snapped a long district win streak by the Mustangs. 1998: WO-S 19 PN-G 12...Jr Dustin Long and the Indian air attack come up short vs. the Mustangs. 1999: WO-S 21 PN-G 14...as described by others in this thread...Dustin Long ran out time. Great game by both teams...slugfest...PN-G would not lose again until it faced Art Briles and Kendall Briles' Stephenville Yellowjackets in the state championship. 2000: WO-S 7 PN-G 0...the Mustangs marched to the state championship game during 2000, and PN-G provided them with one of their strongest tests...another defensive battle...neither team gave up many yards. 2003: WO-S 21 PN-G 20...another nail bitter and slug fest...PN-G used its powerful OL and ground game to wear down the Mustangs, but WO-S proved it had enough stamina and will power (and speed) to survive PN-G ground game. Not a lot of controversy when PN-G and WO-S get together...just good football. Glad PN-G was able to get WO-S back on the schedule.

Nederland/Dayton Scrimmage Thread/Post comments here!
1989NDN replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
From an old PN-G alum/fan: 1. It's a scrimmage. Get off the window ledges. Plenty of things to see on film, evaluate, and learn. Plenty of time to teach and get better. Ned's DC Delbert Spell can teach. 2. As long as Delbert Spell is the DC at Nederland, the Bulldog defense will be just fine. I've seen it turn out that way too many times. D. Spell has done his part to chip away at the PN-G 48-33-7 series lead. 3. It's not where you start, it's where you finish. Pass judgment in Week 10, not week 0. When PN-G travels to Texas City, I want all of the Indians' weaknesses to be exposed and all the ugly to come out and show itself on offense, defense, and the kicking game. We have plenty of time to evaluate, learn, teach, and get better. It's not where you start, it's where you finish. Go Indians. Peace. -
True, not one of their better defenses, but they were aggressive. We had them spread out and they ran to the ball and put a lot of hats on the ballcarrier. We put up some points, but not enough...and the Bronco FG kicker could hit from Mars in a cross wind. Go Indians. Peace.
-
The Indians lost to Dayton 36-31 thanks to Dayton's outstanding FG kicker and fiesty defense, but Dayton is no slouch...it was a great game and Dayton made the plays and got the W...Vidor had a good run last year...one of your better teams since 1978...but, you still lost to PN-G 22-15...and since 1940, the Indians have owned the Pirates and rode them like donkeys to the tune of 40-10-1...so keep that W% around 20% vs the Indians and be proud. I'm a big fan of the Vidor QB/MLB...terrific player that has a mean streak in a good way...he's a leader and he would start and star on any 20-4A team...he's the reason Vidor had a run last year...and he'll likely take you on another run this year...he takes care of the football and make kids around him play hard...you're right, players graduate and when he does, Vidor will have lost an outstanding HS football player...unless he has siblings, the mighty Vidor playoff run might well be over and that 20% winning percentage vs. PN-G will remain about right...and, I'll take the Indians again vs. the Pirates in 2012...that 1920s Wing-T is not as scary as Vidor thinks...its the Vidor QB that is sneaky good...contain him and keep him on defense, and Vidor can be beaten...just like it was last year 22-15. Go Indians. Peace.
-
I don't know what his 40 time is, but he is football fast...sneaky fast...he can find a way to get open. If he puts on 10-15 lbs. and plays at 195-205 lbs. he could be a Wes Welker or Hines Ward type WR...a slot receiver that gets matched up with a nickel DB or a safety and just plays like a ball hawking WR. He reminds me a lot of Hines Ward...justs gets open and makes catches. At Lamar, he will not be able to get wide and run downfield and just out-jump DBs like he did for us at PN-G...but, he has a knack for getting open, finding holes in a zone, and competing for the ball. He has the best set of hands to come through the PN-G football program. When the ball went to him, he competed for it and usually made the catch. He made some outstanding catches in the 6 or 7 games I've seen in the past 2 years. Glad he's got an opportunity to play for LU. He could be a terrific slot WR that moves the chains. We will miss him at PN-G. Go Indians. Peace.
