Reading the post on here has been very entertaining to say the least. You can definitely tell who the umps are, the coaches and the parents by their post. Everyone is pointing the finger, but no one wants to take the blame. It seems to me that blame could be spread out pretty evenly. I've seen bad coaches, bad parents and bad umps (yea, I know that's hard for the umps to believe.....) With that said, the majority of the coaches, parents and umps are good.....but everyone is going to have to admit some blame for the issues or it will never be fixed. I would caution the posters that think LL will be around if the bad calls, bad coaching and improperly run leagues continue. Look at the number of teams 5 years ago versus today. My son will be playing select next year because of the issues. If he plays LL, it will be second to his select team. my 2 cents
I agree with you 100% that the blame should be equally shared. This thread just didn't start out that way and I, for one, don't care to see any one person blamed completely. As for LL versus Select, you're going to get the same bad calls, bad coaching and bad parents at both. It's in all youth sports, period! My suggestion is to play both. Select is weekend tournament ball and has its place but your local LL will be where you son/daughter meets the friends he/she will head off to HS with (after baseball). The best players/teams around play both. They use Select to preapre themselves for LL All Stars. Just look at the most recent 12 yo All Star teams to make big waves at State, BC (GTB) & Jasper (Scrappers). These kids enjoyed the best of both worlds and my son played against both teams at Ford park and in LL All Stars.
Thanks.....good info -
I have coached and volunteer umpired for many years and I will put in my 2 cents. i don't like umpires who look for every excuse to show me as a coach how many rules they know. As an ump, I would never embarrass a volunteer coach on some technical rule, and would always try to do a warning in private. That said, it might be a good thing that these umps act like they do at early levels. It's better to know now that you could get tossed for these types of violations than to wait until a game at sectionals or state. Obviously, it sounds a little harsh to toss a kid or coach for a momentary lapse of judgment or for a bathroom break, but now there will be no excuses if it happens again. Anyone who calls the kids "f(*&ing punks" and doesn't care that he says it in front of a parent deserves and gets no respect from me!
Well I can tell you he coaches the 11U team For Gulf Coast Baseball and I have never heard him speak like that with them or with the high school boys. You must have him confused. I can't say he didn't say that but those words are not the kind of words Coach Landry uses. He is very well respected by parents and players. He demands the kids respect of him and the game. I'm very excited for WOS baseball. If this is what you heard him say then your son shouldn't play. If someone told you this story I recommend you get your own opinion. I for one am very excited about having Coach Landry and realize that he has a marathon to run and not a sprint. It will be an uphill battle. False rumors will not help him get kids out to play. Congrats Coach we are very excited to have you. Tony Dallas
Tony: you know me, I don't go by "hear say". I heard it! He may have been having a bad day that time. He may have been having problems that is none of anyone's business; however, he needs to conduct himself in a proper manner in front of the young people. He may be a good man; however, on this particular day and time, he showed something other then that to me.
I would hate to have my lifes work judged by one statement. You said you would not allow your son to play because he was a smart butt. You have condemned the man based on one statement. I stand by statement that he is not that kind of man or coach. I think your statement is very unfair. I can promise you I have made mistakes in my life that absolutely include getting caught up in the moment and saying some things I probably shouldn't have and I only coach youth sports. My guess is that most coaches would tell you the same thing. If he is the only coach you have ever heard use that language then you haven't been listening to high school sports. I stand by Coach Landry and what he stands for and the kind of coach and man that he is. He will be good for our kids and I would have my boys play for him any day. Again I think you getting on here and making the statement that you made is very unfair to him but that is just my opinion.
I've made a slip or two and I'm PERFECT ;D Good Post TD!
