The Southland is heading for a big decision. 1. Drop football, add UALR and ORU to become a strong basketball conference. or 2. Invite DII's to stay a FCS weak football conference. All depends heavily on what happens with Louisiana schools.
Sorry, UNLV the SLC will NEVER drop football. BTW, I just mentioned you in a post so keep us informed!  8)
If Louisiana schools drop football to stay DI, that doesn't mean they have to leave the SLC. Then how can the SLC play football with 4 teams?

 7. Typical bumpkin Setx mentality. Lets all forget that Beaumont is bigger than Monroe and Ruston combined and that LU is bigger than UL-Monroe and La tech.

I would love for them to move to FBS.  and it may have to come sooner than later if things in the southland shake out badly.
The SLC is not dying. The SLC is facing dropping football or bringing in 4-6 DII football. So it is not dying as a conference, but will take a huge hit in football if not dropping football. The Southland has only 3 and none of the 3 plays football.

 10.
If Lamar was winning consecutive national championships and were to beat a perennial powerhouse like Michigan no one one this board would question a move to FBS.  We are four games removed from being A START-UP PROGRAM.  The lack of progress in a move to FBS is not "SETX mentality".  It's common sense.  Show me our feasibility study results, and I'll listen.
If Lamar was winning FCS national championships, then your excuse would be why move to FBS where we have no chance of winning a NC. Stop trying to pretend you have an open mind.
 11. BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State has knocked off one of college football's top teams. Now the Mountaineers are thinking about joining the big boys. The school, known for its stunning upset of Michigan in 2007 and its three straight national titles last decade, announced Thursday it will evaluate shifting from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Bowl Subdivision. The feasibility study could take up to a year. "With the changing Division I landscape and the unprecedented success that our football program has enjoyed on and off the field in recent years, the time is right to analyze all of our options as a Division I athletics department and football program," athletic director Charlie Cobb said. Appalachian State joins fellow Southern Conference member Georgia Southern and Montana in beginning discussions about moving to the FBS. [Hidden Content] The article should add Georgia St as a move up too. Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, and Georgia st would be filling spots in CUSA and Sunbelt. Then when all openings are filled, then Lamar can decide to join FBS. Ya don't get more SETX mentality than that.

 14. via katfans Nicholls State is dead. At least, somebody, or bodies, in Baton Rouge is trying to kill it. The question is why. Since 2008 the Louisiana Legislature, with the approval of Gov. Bobby Jindal, has seen fit - supposedly in the name of efficiency - to cut Nicholls' budget 29.4 percent or $10.6 million. Try living on your present salary with a 30 percent cut and see how it affects you. Now, in typical Louisiana fashion, the Legislature is considering a possible 35 percent cut on top of that. Upon hearing the news, Larry Howell, special assistant to Nicholls President Stephen Hulbert, put it succinctly: "An additional 35 percent cut will devastate this institution and cause irreversible harm." 15. Another scenario... LA schools drop football but remain DI.  UCA joins MVC. SLC becomes basketball conference. With addition of Oral Roberts and UALR, a very high rated basketball conference. SFA, SHSU, and Lamar would have to find football affiliated conference membership or go Indy. NWst Mcneese SELA Nicholls UALR Oral Roberts SHSU UTA AMCC SFA LAMAR Pan AM
 16.
There's also the fact that schools that participate in the FCS playoffs lose money.  Most FCS schools average less than 10K per game so it's not a money maker.  So for schools like UTSA and Texas State, if they have the money they'll make the jump to FBS.  There's a lot of FCS schools out there talking about going FBS.  I would not be surprised one bit if the NCAA gets rid of the FCS/FBS divisions.  What other D1 sport has divisions like that?
Yes, much talk about getting rid of FCS/FBS in name, but  we will still see a split. Maybe BCS seperate itself from the NCAA. The money will be with BCS.

And lets not forget about the huge budget cuts that will hit NWst, SEla, Nicholls, and Mcneese in 2011. I wouldn't be surprised if football was dropped or downgrade to DIII in 3 of the 4 schools. Replacement for them may have to be non football schools like Houston Baptist and Pan Am.
I think you've been smoking some of that funny stuff with coachacola.  You honestly believe that between McNeese NW State SeLa and Nicholls, 3 of them will be Division III or not have football at all??!!  Please!
State higher education officials presented doom-and-gloom budget scenarios Tuesday to a state Senate committee showing what could happen when the federal stimulus money runs dry next summer. One such possibility included the closure of eight of the state’s 14 public universities as a means to reduce state funding of college costs by 30 percent, or about $300 million. That scenario would involve shuttering Nicholls State University, McNeese State University, Southern University at New Orleans, LSU at Alexandria, LSU at Shreveport, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Grambling State University and Northwestern State University. We don't know what is going to happen in the next 5 years. I like your passion about Lamar and Beaumont but give it a rest for awhile.
Why plan for retirement when I can win the lotto in the future. We don't know what is going to happen in the next 5 years. Why don't you tell the others to give it a rest. Is because you agree with them?
No, UNLV "if" enrollment continues to grow, on campus student involvement continues to grow. There is development around the Lamar campus and LU buys a lot of property for growth. The football team is successful for a few years and like mffl stated there is money for the move to FBS I would support it 100%. Lamar couldn't buy out Coach Roc's contract or give Coach Tidwell a raise for the additional title of interim AD. How can we afford to go FBS?
I understand money, but what you and others don't understand is conference realignment. You can't decide to go FBS when you want too. If the WAC offer LU a good deal, LU must take it and find the money. If not, then LU will most likely never get another opporttunity again. FBS numbers will be capped within 5 years.
