Matt Stepp is a high school football insider for DCTF. These were his comments after attending the game this weekend. Mid-County Madness lives up to the billing Right before the season started, DCTF named the Nederland-Port Neches-Groves rivalry as the state’s best rivalry game and I got to attend the game Friday night. It was everything it was billed to be and then some. Nederland, a significant underdog against unbeaten PNG, pulled out a thrilling 36-35 win in front of an overflow crowd of well over 12,000 at Bulldog Stadium Friday. It was a back and forth affair and PNG quarterback Roschon Johnson was sensational as the Texas-commit ran for five touchdowns and his score with 1:17 left to put PNG up 35-28 appeared to be the game winner. Nederland wouldn’t go away and marched 77 yards with Kevon Latulas scoring his third receiving touchdown with 13 seconds left to make it 35-34. First-year head coach Monte Barrow called a timeout to draw up a two-point play and it worked to perfection as linebacker Colton Beeson lined up at tight end and was open in the end zone for the two-point try and the heart stopping win. It was a mad house after the game and it’s one I won’t soon forget. My advice is that if you love Texas high school football, put this rivalry game on your bucket list. [Hidden Content]

That's the spirit! Like this Manvel is the number one in state for a reason. I know its highly unlikely that Nederland could win BUT... Nederland Knocked off then number one Pearland Dawson a few years ago. Of course we were the 5th ranked in the state that year.

A few times the 4th place team has won state. I think its ok... but I do agree a 1 wind team should not be in the playoffs.

Texas City is like 3-5 this year.

I honestly don't see why anyone would be down on Faircloth. What is PNG now 9-1?? PNG will be fine. They just need to focus on Crosby... One game does not define a team.

Poor choice of words calling these kids scrubs. These are someones sons... No bueno.

I'm happy for any kid in our area that gets a chance to go to a quality university for free and play the game they love. It is a means to an end. To me Pakronos you miss the point. You seem like a bit of a "hater". All the MC kids you named went to school and received a free education. I do not care if they are super stars or make the NFL. I'm proud of our area schools and our kids.

Last night the run game was beating Central. Going to the pass is why I think we lost. Until they stop the run, SHOVE IT DOWN THEIR THROAT!!! More screens, swing passes, play action. I believe will be fine but I sure wish we could have pulled this one out.

Blah blah blah refs.... blah blah blah not fair... what a great game!!! Congrats to PNG on a hard fought win. I am a lifelong Bulldog fan. Tonight we lost. I'm not crying or blaming the refs. We were outplayed tonight by a lesser opponent. That is why the games are play. ANY GIVEN SUNDAY.... Memorial could have won but spiked the ball on 4th down right near the goal line. That was not the refs. That mistake cost them the game. Accept responsibility for the loss and move on. Good luck Memorial as you move through the rest of the season. Yall have a great team and should go far!!! This Dog will be pulling for yall throughout the year and in the playoffs!! Look at the stats. Nederland should have blown them out. Central did a good job of holding when it counted!!

Nederland was outplayed tonight. Central bent but did not break on defense. Nederland could not execute on offense inside the 35 or so... Props to Central for a salty D and putting together a drive at the end.
