Cleveland has had a heck of a tournament should be a good one!! Eagles head to title game after win over GCM By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published December 31, 2008 MONT BELVIEU — The Barbers Hill Eagles advanced to the championship of the Gulf Coast Classic with a 49-29 win over Goose Creek Memorial Tuesday. Ian Hamlin and Kody Mourer led the way for the Eagles with 16 points and 11 points, respectively. The Eagles, who have not won the Gulf Coast Classic since 2005, started the game off with a 14-2 run. “We just have to put the ball in the basket,†Patriots head coach Jeff Keener said. “We had a lot of looks at the rim and now we just have to finish. “After we fell down 14-2, I felt we did a good job all game of trying to battle back.†The Patriots answered back after falling down going on a 6-1 run to end the first quarter down 15-8. The Eagles found their shot again though in the second quarter outscoring the Patriots 13-9 and took a 28-17 lead into halftime. Both teams came out after the break though and played physically in the third quarter which resulted in just 11 points being scored, eight by the Eagles and three by the Patriots. Eagles head coach Nathan Toon said the Eagles like when it is a physical ball game. The Eagles outscored the Patriots 13-9 once again in the fourth quarter to cruise to the 49-29 victory. Both teams head coaches said they felt their players did a good job of playing hard all game. “I felt we rebounded well,†Eagles head coach Nathan Toon said. “We wanted to get into our offensive sets and I felt we executed well when we did that.†Keener felt his players competed well with the Eagles in the game. “We just have to get better on the defensive glass,†he said. “They just wanted it more on the boards then we did but we did play well defensively. “We just can’t give up that many offensive rebounds.†Toon said the Eagles still have a lot of room for improvement. “We need to shoot free throws better as well as work on are zone rotations defensively more as well,†he said. “We had a few mental lapses as well so we just need to keep our intensity better.†Jerel Zayas, DeMartie Allen and Pedro Alvarez led the way for the Patriots in the loss. Zayas and Allen each scored six points while Alvarez had five points. The Patriots followed up their loss to the Eagles with a 58-29 loss to Nederland Tuesday knocking them out of the Gulf Coast Classic. The Patriots will be back in action Tuesday when they host Dayton at 7:30 p.m. In other action at the Gulf Coast Classic in the boys’ division, the Sterling Rangers beat Little Cypress-Mauriceville 63-41 Tuesday. Kincade had 17 points, Mitchell had 16 points with four of his baskets being three pointers and Corley had 11 points. “I felt we played hard defensively,†Patton said. “Our goal was to come in here and repeat as champions but since our lose we had to refocus ourselves.†The Rangers will be back in action today at 10:30 a.m. when they play Spring-Dekaney in the consolation bracket championship game.

Kirbyville vs. Anahuac Predictions?/IT'S GAME DAY!!!
BHFAN replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
;D Rankings, Wildcats don’t scare Anahuac By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published November 20, 2008 ANAHUAC — The Anahuac Panthers football team will play in its first postseason game since 2003 tonight when they take on No. 2-ranked Kirbyville at Little-Cypress Mauriceville at 7 p.m. In that time, Kirbyville has gone 7-4 in the playoffs and made it to the regional round three out of the four years. The Panthers finished as undefeated district champs in District 23-2A, going 6-0 on in district and 8-2 overall. That offers a sharp contrast to last year’s team that went 2-8 overall and 1-5 in district play. Part of Anahuac’s improved play has been the offense, which is led by senior quarterback Jacob Pesina and senior running back Deior McNeil. “The coaches have been pushing us since the offseason and trying to keep us focused,†Pesina said. “It’s a big thing (winning the district title) in this town and it’s gotten us a lot more support.†McNeil, who has 1,298 yards and 25 touchdowns on 134 carries, agrees with his teammate that working out every day has helped the team turn it around. “We started trusting him (Coach Barbay),†McNeil said. “When I was a freshmen and sophomore, we had two or three new coaches, so the coach staying and not giving up on us helped us a lot. He led us to the district title.†Both players say they don’t care about the high ranking the Wildcats have. “We don’t care about the rankings,†Pesina said. “It’s only a number. If we just come to play, we should be able to win.†McNeil agrees with his quarterback, who has passed for 587 yards and six touchdowns with only one interception. “That doesn’t matter to us,†McNeil said, referring to the Wildcats’ ranking. “The people that are ranking them could have been my grandfather.†Pesina and McNeil agree the Panthers can beat the Wildcats, who are 10-0 on the year. “We just can’t have turnovers and have to keep scoring,†Pesina said. “As long as we execute and don’t have any big turnovers we should be all right.†McNeil feels the two teams are evenly matched up on paper. “As long as we go out and play Panther football and have no turnovers, it should be a good game,†McNeil said. Directions to Little Cypress-Mauriceville from Anahuac: Take 1-10 East for 63 miles; Take Exit 877 toward TX-87/Orange/Newton; Turn left on TX-87/N16th St for 3 miles. Stadium is at 7327 Highway 87 N. -
