  1. Wow you guys are like a bunch of crying girls WAH WAH WAH ;D And all so tough with the name calling (Big behind the keyboard arent we) Why is it so impossible to understand someones want for there Team to go to the next level? This is a football thread not all sports, so we are discussing football! All other sports at BH do very well and are not part of this discussion. The fact is that BH has been out played in the playoffs! Back in 99 BH went to round three since then not even close! After playing a weak team in round one of the playoffs we get killed! This isn't about talent and you are blind if you think Kirbyville had better talent than BH the two years they were knocked out of the playoffs by them. The list goes on and on,but you super football genuises will beg to differ. Don't tell me about records either BH has played in the weakest 3A and 4A districts and 10-0 dont mean nothing! Do all of you "BH Supports" realy want to stay where we are or do you want to climb to the next level? I say after 9 years this program is going to stay where its at and to go to the next level then there needs to be a change. I for one do not want to be watching other teams in the playoffs after week 2 twenty years from now. Oh and GRIFF Bite me my by polar friend ;D
  2. I new I disliked Crosby for some reason ;D
  3. I haven't heard a thing, but I hope your right! This would be a good schedule for the Eagles!
  4. This is old news to some, but congrats to Kendall and Eagle 07!! Eagle pitcher inks with Angelina College By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun  Published January 16, 2008 The success that Barbers Hill pitcher Kendall Thamm has enjoyed started in the spring of his freshman year — when he was cut in tryouts. Three years later, Thamm has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Angelina College, where he will pitch. Thamm is one of four Eagle pitchers that will play college baseball. “Junior college was a better fit for me out of high school,” Thamm said. “I have only been pitching for two years and Angelina will help me develop as a pitcher. “I liked the coaching staff and coach Livin (Angelina coach Jeff Livin) has a real good pitching background. He pitched in the minor leagues and has coached several pro players, including Clay Buchholz.” Last season was a breakout year for Thamm as he posted a 12-2 record and a 1.69 earned run average while striking out 113 batters as the No. 2 pitcher in the rotation behind Texas A&M signee Ross Hales. The left-hander broke into the rotation after spending the previous season on the sophomore team. Thamm was named to the first team of the 21-4A All-District team following last season and was invited to play in the Greater Houston Junior All Star game at Rice University’s Reckling Park. “Kendall showed us he could pitch his sophomore year,” Barbers Hill head coach Gil Stalbaum said. “Since he was a left-hander we knew he could help us. Last year he refined his skills and really helped us. “I think getting cut motivated him to really improve and become a better athlete. That in turn, turned him into a better baseball player. He got bigger with hard work in the weight room.” The work paid off as Thamm began to turn it around during the summer leading up to his sophomore year. Word began to get back to Stalbaum about Thamm’s effectiveness. “Getting cut helped me realize that if I wanted to make it, I would have to put in a lot of work,” Thamm said. The Eagles went on to post a 26-8-1 record last season and advanced to the regional semifinals. With a wealth of talent returning, Barbers Hill is once again poised for a deep playoff run. Once again, Thamm will be one of those that Stalbaum leans on. “The main thing is I don’t want to worry about my numbers,” Thamm said. “I just want to keep my team in the game and give them a chance to win. “Looking back on last year, I was kind of surprised at everything that I accomplished. I’m looking forward to building on it this year.”
  5. Congrats To Chris!! By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published January 2, 2008 Since graduating from Barbers Hill in the spring of 2006, Chris Daniels has pursued a dream to play college football. It’s been an uphill battle for the three-year starting quarterback for the Eagles since he blew his knee out in the fourth game of his senior season against Diboll. The work came to fruition this winter when the United States Military Academy offered Daniels the chance to join the team and receive an education. “I am going to get a chance to play Division I football, which has always been a dream of mine and the education is considered to be at the same level as the Ivy League,†Daniels said. “The experience is one that you can’t get anywhere else.†To say Daniels’ road to West Point is the road less traveled would be something of an understatement. Daniels has attended two community colleges and spent a semester as a member of the football team at Universidad de Anahuac in Cancun, Mexico, working toward an opportunity to play football at the collegiate level. Working out in a church basement in Pittsburgh, Pa., and at a local high school, Daniels enlisted the help of his sister and brother who filmed his workouts. Since graduating from Barbers Hill, Daniels has grown to 6 feet, 212 pounds, up from the 185 pounds he graduated at. In rehabbing his knee, Daniels has maintained his speed in the forty running a 4.6. “There were some Ivy League schools that kept in touch and I sent them film last spring,†Daniels said. “They wanted to see more film this fall once I got up to speed with my knee. “West Point liked my film and invited me to watch them play Rutgers. It was about 28 degrees, raining and windy, but people stayed on their feet the whole time. “It is such a historic place and the facilities are top notch.†The visit to the academy was followed by an in-home visit. After weighing his options, the decision was a no-brainer for Daniels. “I know they are going to give me a shot at quarterback,†Daniels said. “When I was working out, I never thought I would get a shot to play quarterback because of the two-year layoff. “They have recruited four quarterbacks this year and if I wind up at defensive back, that is fine. I am still in the process of filling out some papers, but I have taken a physical and a fitness test. “The football team takes care of the recommendations from Congress, which is kind of a weird thing because they didn’t know whether to get one from Pennsylvania or Texas, because I have not been in Pennsylvania very long.†Ironically, one of the incoming quarterback recruits for Army is Lee senior Josh Jones, who committed to the Academy in the fall. During Daniels’ senior season at Barbers Hill, he was receiving looks from several universities, but a season-ending injury in the fourth game of the year cost him a shot at a scholarship. Looking to continue his career, Daniels, along with several Houston area high school football players, accepted an offer to play football for the Universidad de Anahuac in Cancun. Daniels saw action in one game before coming back to Texas. “They had just started the football program and tried to do too many things at once,†Daniels said. “It was underdeveloped and I left after one semester. “It’s one thing to go off to school and even more difficult to go to a school where they don’t speak your language.†When Daniels returned from Mexico, Bayer transferred his father to Pittsburgh. After finishing a semester at Lee College, Daniels moved with his family to Pittsburgh where he was considering walking on to the football teams at either Pittsburgh or Penn State. Daniels was attending the Community College of Allegheny County for a semester with the intention of enrolling at either university once he qualified for in-state tuition. Once Army made the offer, Daniels took into consideration not only football, but also life after football. “In high school I never showed a lot of interest in the service academies,†Daniels said. “Air Force had talked to coach Price (Barbers Hill coach Don Price), but it seemed like too much of a commitment. “But now I realize that it is a great opportunity. I probably won’t look at it as a four-year commitment. It is an honor to serve your country.â€

  18. Sterling, BH, Crosby in girls’ bracket By Dave Rogers Published December 27, 2007 MONT BELVIEU — Baytown Sterling is one of seven Class 5A teams entered in the girls’ division of the Gulf Coast Classic and Barbers Hill and Crosby are among 10 4A teams that make up the 17-team bracket. Action in the three-day event at Barbers Hill High School begins at 9 a.m. this morning, with Sterling taking on Mayde Creek. Crosby plays Port Arthur Memorial at 10:30 a.m. and Barbers Hill plays the West Brook-Nederland winner at 6 p.m. A total of 13 boys’ and 17 girls’ teams are entered in the 27th combined Gulf Coast Classic, which features seven boys’ and nine girls’ games today. Besides Sterling, other 5A entries are Spring, Mayde Creek, PA Memorial, Humble, West Brook and Hastings. La Marque, Vidor, Huffman, Port Neches-Groves, Nederland, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Lumberton and Smiley join Crosby and the host Lady Eagles in the girls’ field. In all, the tournament will consist of 55 games and require the use of four gyms. Still, that’s down some for the event which has been an annual fixture on the Barbers Hill and Gulf Coast calendar for decades. “We try to get 32 teams (16 boys and 16 girls), but one year we had 35 girls’ teams,†recalls Barbers Hill athletic director Don Price. “We had to go to four days to get all the games in. “When we first started doing it, there were not a lot of Christmas tournaments, but now a bunch have sprung up.†Former Barbers Hill coach Kenneth Skidmore was there when the decision was made to combine boys’ and girls’ tournaments and hold them the week between Christmas and New Years, a move he said happened in 1991. “A long time ago, we used to have it before the Christmas holidays,†he said. “The girls’ tournament would be two weeks before we got out and the boys’ tournament a week later. “But then people started having so many tests (before Christmas), we moved it back. People used to have their end-of-semester tests in January, but now they have them before Christmas.†Putting on the Gulf Coast Classic is a huge undertaking that requires a lot of gym space as well as people. Barbers Hill has been blessed with a multitude of gyms for many years. This year’s tournament will be played at the Field House, High School Competition Gym and High School Auxiliary Gym today. The Middle School Gym will be added to site list for Friday’s 20-game schedule. In years past, the Intermediate School’s gym, which features two courts, has also been used. “For every game we play, we have to have three workers for the gate, the scoreboard and the scorebook,†Price said. “The booster club runs the hospitality room, where they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the boosters run the concession stands. “We’ll spend $7,000 on officiating fees this year. Between the entry fees and gate we try to break even.†A relative newcomer, second-year Barbers Hill boys’ coach Nathan Toon marvels at the organization. “The entire community runs it,†he says. “They’ve been doing it for many years and they really do a good job of running it. Coach Chancellor (girls’ head coach John Chancellor) and I really don’t do anything. “It’s run by the coaching staff and the community.â€
  19. BH boys return to play in own tourney By Dave Rogers Published December 27, 2007 MONT BELVIEU – The Barbers Hill boys are hoping for a pair of successful comebacks at this weekend’s Gulf Coast Classic. For starters, just playing in the annual three-day boys’ and girls’ roundball festival put on by the coaches and boosters at Barbers Hill will be an improvement on a year ago when a scheduling snafu left the Eagles in the uncomfortable position of hosting a tournament they couldn’t play in. “That was just my mistake,†said second-year Eagle head coach Nathan Toon. “I scheduled too many games, so we had to pull ourselves out of it at the last minute, so we wouldn’t be in violation of UIL rules.†Without Barbers Hill’s boys to defend their title, Dayton won the 2006 tournament. “It was a stupid mistake on my part,†Toon said of the scheduling goof. “It was weird for the community, since community members and coaches work it. But it was most disappointing to last year’s seniors. They look forward to it. That’s what I most regret. “But we’re back in it now. I joke to the team, ‘We’re still defending champs. I haven’t lost a game in it.’ “Honestly, we’re glad to be back in it.†As much as seeing the Eagles playing during the tournament and not just watching, Toon and the Barbers Hill fans are looking forward to seeing another comeback at the tournament, the return of Brooks Ybarra. The 6-foot-4 senior guard, a first-team all-district player last year who can do it all when he’s healthy, has missed the fall portion of the schedule after breaking his foot in Barbers Hill’s final preseason scrimmage. The three-year letterman got his doctor’s release a week ago and has been practicing with the team since. “He’s ready to go, but we’re being cautious with him,†Toon said. “We’re going to play him in the Gulf Coast Classic. I don’t know how much — it will be based on how he feels – but we’ve got to get him ready to go so we can have him for the last 12 games of district.†Toon and the Eagles yearn for Ybarra’s skills. “He’s our tallest player,†the coach notes. “He plays guard, but he also plays big. He’s a real good rebounder. He can guard inside. He can guard outside. He can hit the outside shot or he can take it to the basket. “I think he’ll fit in well with Jon Daniels and Ian Hamlin.†The Eagles have so far done OK without Ybarra, getting off to a 10-5 start that includes a 1-1 beginning in District 21-4A play. “I’ve talked to a lot of coaches who are surprised we’ve been 10-5 without him,†Toon said. “We have been playing really well without him. Therefore, we didn’t feel rushed to get him back. But a guy who is talented like him, obviously we want him back for the second half of the season. “We’ve got to make sure the chemistry works. That’s my job.†A total of 13 boys’ teams are entered in the Gulf Coast Classic and, as the only Class 5A varsity team in the boys’ division, Baytown Sterling is one of the favorites, along with Barbers Hill and Dayton. Other teams entered on the boys’ side include Huffman, Coldspring, Spring Dekaney, West Orange-Stark, Cleveland, Nederland, Liberty Hill, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Montgomery and Splendora. “Really, they’re all pretty good,†Toon said. “There’s no easy teams. I don’t think there’s a favorite. It’s going to be good for everybody in it. If you ask me, it’s pretty wide open.†Sterling opens play at 1:30 p.m. today at the Auxiliary Gym against Liberty Hill, one of five Class 3A schools in the boys’ division. Barbers Hill takes on Splendora at 7:30 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. UIL rules require that all soccer and basketball teams take a break of five consecutive days from practice and games over the Christmas holidays. Three of those days must be Christmas Eve, Christmas and Dec. 26. That means the teams in the Gulf Coast Classic will be coming in cold. But Toon has a morning workout set for his Eagles in advance of their game tonight. “That’s the advantage we have of having our own tournament,†he said. “You get to have your own practice.â€
