From Chad Cooper (The Examiner): Roc adds two JUCO standouts Team gets JUCO All-American Lamar men's basketball coach Steve Roccaforte landed two big recruits this week including the nation's leading JUCO scorer in Devon Lamb. He and Southwestern Community College teammate Brandon Davis have committed to play for the Cardinals this fall. Lamb, a 6-2 shooting guard, led the JUCO nation averaging 27.7 points per game and was 13th in rebounding with 11.0 per game. He also shot 40-101 (.396) from 3-point range and was recently named to the NJCAA All-American Team. The sophomore originally committed to the University of Houston over Wichita State and Detroit, but withdrew his commitment when Tom Penders resigned. Lamb, born in Jacksonville, Fla., played high school basketball at national powerhouse Arlington Country Day. Davis, a 6-6 guard, was 15th in the nation in scoring with 20.7 points per game. Like Lamb, Davis had the stroke behind the arc, hitting on 111-of-232 attempts, which ranked fifth in the country. Davis also ranked 11th from the charity stripe, shooting 109-129 (.844), and ranked 18th in assists per night, dishing out 5.7. Davis was also born in Jacksonville but prepped at Edward H. White High School.

Devon Lamb High School Resume: Named Dairy Farmers Class 2A basketball player of the year as a senior.....Named Times-Union All-First Coast boys basketball player of the year....Was voted MVP of Class 2A 2007 state tournament, and made the all-tournament team the past two years..... Named to Class 2A all-state first team this year, third team in 2006.... Finished as the city's second-leading scorer (22.7 ppg) and rebounder (14.1 rpg).... Averaged 14.7 yards per run and 33.1 yards per catch in senior season for football team..... one of Jacksonville, FL most versatile athletes in several years Quote: "If I had a choice, I would go for the NFL," said Lamb, who would like to gain 20 pounds before the start of football season. "In basketball nowadays, you need to be 6-7, 6-8, 6-9, and I'm only 6-1. In football, the receivers are generally 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, and the cornerbacks are usually under 6 feet. I'm confident that I can outjump any cornerback for the ball." "He's an outstanding basketball player and gets more done at his size than anybody in the state," ACD Head Coach Rex Morgan said. "But the best thing is to have watched him grow as a person, and from an academic standpoint, since he arrived here. The best thing is that he's going on to college to get his education; that's the main thing. And then one day, I hope he is in the NBA or NFL and fulfills his dream" Last year, he was named Region 5 Freshman of the Year.....this past season, he was named Offensive Player of the Year

BEAUMONT – Lamar University’s Clayton Farhat and Wade Mathis collected three hits each; Matison Smith and Garrett Steward came through some gritty pitching, and the Cardinals took advantage of faulty defensive play by 21st-ranked Southeastern Louisiana to defeat the Lions 7-4 Thursday night. Farhat pulled a run-scoring triple down the right field line in the Cardinals’ four-run sixth inning that increased their lead to 7-1, and he also had two singles as he raised his season batting average from .293 to .317. In stretching his hitting streak to eight games, Mathis singled in the second and sixth innings and added his seventh double of the season in the seventh. Smith, a senior right-hander scattered 11 hits over 6.2 innings and struck out five and walked two in improving his record to 4-1. He left in favor of Steward after yielding a two-out, three-run double to Justin Boudreaux in the seventh inning. Steward, a junior right-hander, held the Lions in check the rest of the way to pick up his first save of the season. He allowed one hit and struck out two batters without walking anyone. The victory moved the Cardinals to 16-9 on the season and 3-7 in the Southland Conference. The Lions dropped to 23-4 and 7-3, respectively. The Lions committed two errors in the fifth inning to make all three of the Cardinals’ run in that frame unearned. The Lions had two more miscues in the Cardinals’ big four-run sixth. Catcher Chad Gough-Fortenberry went 3-for-4 for the Lions, and Boudreaux and Jeff Hankensee added two hits each. The Vincent-Beck Stadium crowd of 423 saw the Lions outhit the Cardinals 12-10, but the Cards’ came through with more timely hits. The teams will play Game 2 of the three-game series at 6:30 p.m. Friday, also in Vincent-Beck Stadium. The series finale is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.

BEAUMONT , Texas – Lamar head women’s soccer coach Dewi Hardman has announced the addition of eight student-athletes who have agreed to play for the Lady Cardinals beginning this fall. Anneliese Dernehl, Angie Guillory, Laura Hicks, Stefanie Miroballi, Danielle Pierce, Kylie Robinett, Ashley Smith and Amber Thornhill make up Lamar’s 2010 recruiting class. The group consists of five Houston-area players, two from North Texas and the Dallas-area, and one standout from Australia. Hardman has added two goalkeepers, two defenders and four players who can play in the middle or up front. Dernehl is a defender from Sugar Land who prepped at Lamar Consolidated. The multi-sport athlete has been a First Team All-District 45-4A selection in soccer and volleyball. “Anneliese is a multi-talented athlete who we are looking at playing as a defender,†Hardman said. “She played for the Eclipse Club out of Houston.†Guillory is a forward out of Magnolia West High School who was the District 40-4A Offensive Player of the Year. “Angie has very good pace and great size and has been the leading goal scorer for many of the teams she has played on,†Hardman said. “She is going to be very dynamic within our group and can pose a lot of threats to the teams we face.†Hicks is a 5-foot-10 midfielder out of Mayde Creek HS in Houston who has been an all-region selection by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches. “Laura has great pace and has developed really well over the last two years,†Hardman said. “She has a great upside and is improving daily. She will add a lot of size to our attack.†Miroballi played both midfielder and defender at Houston’s Clear Lake HS, where the Falcons went 22-1-4 a year ago, while compiling a 14-0 district record en route to an appearance in the Class 5A state semifinals. “Stefanie played her club soccer for the Albion Hurricanes and is a very gifted athlete who understands the game very well,†Hardman said. “She plays the game effectively and is very tenacious.†Pearce is a speedy forward from Sydney, Australia who has competed at the state level in both soccer and track & field. “Danielle is an extremely gifted athlete who can play outside midfielder or forward for us but offers great diversity because of her athleticism,†Hardman said. Robinett is out of Rockwall Heath HS and is one of two goalkeepers who are joining the team. She is in her fourth year at RHHS and is currently a member of the Sting Royal ‘93 Girls soccer club. “Kylie is a very athletic goalkeeper who will give us some solid depth in goal,†Hardman said. Smith, who attends Central HS in Keller, is the other goalkeeper in the group. She was one of four players to sign with various Southland Conference schools. She also competes at the premier level of club soccer with the DFW Tornadoes, and she is a Mirabeau Scholarship recipient, who will give the program four of the 60 on campus. “Ashley is a very good goalkeeper who is very well coached,†Hardman said “Both she and Kylie will do good jobs in pushing Jennifer (Gibbs) to continue to get better. We want them to push for a starting spot, because competition is a great driving force.†Thornhill is a defender from Katy Morton Ranch who was an ODP South Texas State Team, Region III camp attendee and Pool player. “Amber reads the game very well and tactically is very astute,†Hardman said. “She is a good leader who communicates well and has a great throw-in that can be a big weapon to our attack.†As a whole, Hardman said he accomplished what he set out to do during the recruiting process. “We needed to accomplish three things,†he said. “We needed to play deeper, because we played a number of games shorthanded last year. The need for 17 to 18 quality, healthy players was paramount. We didn’t want just any depth, but quality depth with good size and pace. “Down the road we think there are some from this group who will be standout performers and will contribute to the program. We recruited eight Texas-based players and have been able to forge good relationships with all of the clubs in the Houston and Dallas areas.â€

BEAUMONT – Todd Whitten, who spent the past five years as head football coach at Sam Houston State University, is joining Ray Woodard’s Lamar University staff as offensive coordinator. Whitten, who replaces Tommy Mainord who left in January to take an assistant’s job at Texas Tech, reported to work Monday, the day before the Cardinals open spring training in preparation for the 2010 season, the first for Lamar since 1989. Whitten compiled a 25-28 record at Sam Houston State with his best seasons being 2006 and 2007, when the Bearkats had runnerup finishes in the Southland Conference with 6-5 and 7-4 records, respectively. Whitten’s final Bearkat team went 5-6 and finished fifth in the SLC race. Prior to succeeding longtime Sam Houston coach Ron Randleman in January of 2005, Whitten spent six seasons as head coach at Tarleton State, leading the Texans to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2001 and 2003. The 2001 Texans advanced to the quarterfinals and posted a 10-3 record. Whitten, who has also been an assistant coach at Texas Tech, New Mexico State, Texas-El Paso and Wyoming as well as Sam Houston State, had a 45-23 record at Tarleton State, and his 11-season head-coaching record is 70-51. “I’m excited about having Todd join our staff,†said Woodard. “He has a wealth of experience, and he’s also a coach I’ve known and respected for a long, long time. “Todd has a lot of familiarity with Southland Conference football, and that will be beneficial to our program. Everywhere Todd has been, the teams have put up impressive numbers in passing and total offense, so we’re looking forward to tapping into his expertise.†When Whitten was offensive coordinator at Sam Houston State in 1999, the Bearkats led the SLC in total offense and passing, and they were second in scoring. As head coach, he had 51 players earn All-SLC recognition at Sam Houston, and he had another 80 All-Lone Star Conference performers at Tarleton State. Woodard, Whitten and the rest of Lamar’s coaching staff will hit the Vernon Glass Field of Champions practice facility at 4 p.m. Tuesday for the Cardinals’ first of four practices this week. The first three will be in shorts and helmets, and the first one in full pads will be Friday, also at 4 p.m. The Cardinals will conduct controlled scrimmages on March 26 and on April 1, at the practice field. After four weeks of practices, the Cardinals will conclude spring training with a Spring Game, set for 3 p.m. on April 10, at the Lamar Soccer Complex.

BEAUMONT – For the second time in three weeks, Lamar University has the reigning Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week. Matison Smith, who hurled his first collegiate shutout in a 4-0 victory over Penn State on Saturday afternoon, was the top vote getter in the weekly balloting by the league’s sports information directors. The senior right-hander from Nederland shut down the Nittany Lions on four hits. In improving to 3-0 on the season and keeping his season earned run average at a spotless 0.00, Smith struck out six batters and walked three. He had three, three-up-and-three-down innings, and he had 13 groundball outs. Smith threw 72 of his 118 pitches for strikes, and he capped his sterling performance by striking out the side in the ninth inning. Spencer Cuniff, who held the University of Maine scoreless over the final eight innings of Lamar’s 5-4, 17-inning victory on Feb. 20, earned the SLC’s first Pitcher of the Week honor for the 2010 season.

Herbert’s 633 points are the most scored in a season since 1997 and her 399 rebounds are the most since 1990, ranking fourth in conference history. Herbert set the league record for most free throws (190) and led the league in shooting (.579). Herbert’s 27 double-doubles are the most in a season including 23 consecutive ranking second all-time in NCAA Division I behind former Oklahoma All-American Courtney Paris (33). Martin is the first UT Arlington player named defensive player of the year. A native of Arlington, Texas, Martin ranked second in the league in blocks (30) and was fifth overall in rebounds (234) with the majority coming on the defensive end (165). Jenna would have my vote for SLC Player of the Year....she's been as advertised. You take her out of the lineup, how good would Lamar be? They would still be good but not at the same level....but that's my opinion.

UCA's Megan Herbert should be hands down the SLC Freshman & Player of the Year. What she's doing is unreal. Avg 22.0 ppg - 1st in SLC 14.0 rpg - 1st in SLC and Nation (Will have school record for avg in a season) .559 FG - 1st .836 FT - 1st 6.1 Off Rebs Per Game - 1st 7.9 Def Rebs Per Game - 1st 35.4 Min Per Game - 5th Posted 23 consecutive double-doubles which is the 2nd longest streak by a Division 1 player (3rd All-Time) in NCAA History behind Courtney Paris' 112 in a row. Oh and she is only one of three players to average 20 pts & 10 rebs per game in the nation.....and is the only freshman in the group. Her High School career is like a video game....4-Time All-State, All-Region & All-District Selection.....over 2,800 pts and 1,300 rebs....1st Team All-American....and she ended up staying close to home to go to UCA

BEAUMONT – Anthony Wilkins, a first-team New Jersey All-State selection in 2009, has signed a scholarship agreement with Lamar University, increasing the Cardinals’ 2010 spring recruiting class to 19. A 6-foot-5, 340-pound offensive lineman, Wilkins played last season at St. Peter’s Prep School in Newark, N.J. He helped his team finished third in the final state rankings, and he was honored as the Offensive Lineman of the Year on the 2009 All-Hudson County Team. “Anthony is a big offensive lineman with great feet,†said Ray Woodard, Lamar’s head coach. “He fits perfectly into one of our need areas, and we’re excited to have him join our program.â€

After recording a three-game sweep at Mississippi State last weekend, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team entered the national rankings for the first time in school history as the Lions were ranked No. 29 in the Collegiate Baseball poll. Southeastern (7-0) earned its first-ever sweep of an SEC opponent after coming back twice from two-run deficits to claim a 6-5 win in Sunday's finale. The Lions scored two runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by Trey Martin's steal of home that snapped a 5-5 tie. The Lions opened the series scoring three runs in the ninth inning in a 4-1 victory before defeating the Bulldogs, 8-5, on Saturday. All-American relief pitcher Chris Franklin earned the win in Friday's game before coming back to pick up the save in Sunday's contest. The Lions, who finished 37-22 last season, were one of five newcomers to the poll which included Western Kentucky (No. 23), Kentucky (No. 25), Washington State (No. 28) and Vanderbilt (No. 30). Defending national champion LSU remained No. 1 for the second consecutive week. Southeastern is also receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll and in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll. Lamar is receiving votes in the NCBWA poll as well.

If you don't want to get beat by 135 pts, then stop them. I've been on both sides of the ball. My team has gotten beat by 50 in basketball but I've been on baseball teams that won 28-0. When I play a sport, I play to win and win big. Don't play sports if your going to get your feelings hurt when you lose big because it could happen. It would be a slap in the face if a team was up 50 on us and just holding the ball and playing keep a way. Bottom line is their team is better than Lee's, go back to the drawing board and move on to the next game. No need to cry and complain about them running up the score. If they would of played better defense, that wouldn't of happened. Yates is the #2 team in the nation so I would imagine someone else is going to take a beatdown this season. That coach shouldn't be fired or whatever else people are saying. If you think your going to get embarassed, just don't show up. That's just me. Go Cowboys!!! -

2009-10 Lamar Men’s Basketball Roster Announced 15-player roster averages as the tallest team in school history BEAUMONT, Texas – When the Lamar men’s basketball team begins individual workouts this week, they will do so with the tallest team in school history. Fourth-year head coach Steve Roccaforte has assembled a 15-member roster with no student-athlete measuring under six feet. In fact, seven players are at least 6-7 and five top out at 6-9 or taller. The average height is 77.8 inches (6-5 ¾), just a bit taller than the previous tallest team of 77.7 inches in 2005-06. Freshman Jonathan Garza is the shortest member of the team at 6-0. Sophomore Anthony Miles and junior transfer Kendrick Harris are each 6-1, followed closely by freshman Donley Minor at 6-2. Junior transfer Reggie Mathis and sophomore transfer E.B. Davis both measure out at 6-4. Returning senior Ashton Hall and sophomore Charlie Harper are listed at 6-6, with senior Justin Nabors at 6-7. Fifth-year senior Lawrence Nwevo is 6-8 and a trio of newcomers – freshman Stanford Brown, sophomore Justin Carter and freshman Justin Wesley – are all 6-9. Freshman Osas Ebomwonyi and junior Coy Custer will use their heights of 6-10 and 6-11, respectively, to work down low. Roccaforte’s coaching staff remains intact with assistants Tic Price, Silvey Dominguez and Kermit Holmes joined by former letterwinner Darren Hopkins as the director of basketball operations. Hopkins played for Lamar from 2006-08 and earned his bachelor’s degree in general studies in May of 2008. The support staff also has two additions in the form of athletic trainer David McDonald and undergraduate manager Matt Pace. Pace, a Beaumont native who prepped at Monsignor Kelly HS earned a letter as a walk-on last season after appearing in eight games. The 2009-10 season, which features a school-record 18 home games, will begin on Nov. 13 against Huston-Tillotson. The home slate includes eight Southland Conference games and match-ups with long-time rivals Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Rice, Texas-Pan American and Tulane. Non-conference road games in 2009-10 will include Denver, Hawaii, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Ohio and Texas Tech. Season ticket renewals were sent out in early August and are due back to the Lamar Ticket Office by Sept. 25.
