Actually, You can't get cheap baskets if you press!!! You can only get cheap baskets if you break the press or turnover the team that is being pressed! You have to be good at it or you will give up easy baskets... If you can't do it effectively you should back off. The Lee coach started the game in the press and stayed in it. On of his main problems... He never backed out of it and gave Yates way too many easy baskets! Yates broke Lee's press with ease! That means back out of it, slow the game down and then you can surpress the score! Instead they did the opposite, The Lee coach was wrong too!

History Lesson... Let me clear on thing up Nic played at Cinco Ranch is Freshman Year 2002... Hi Dad was the coach at Hightower. 2001 Willowridge wins State (TJ Ford) 2002 Hightower Gets to State first round exit 2003 Hightower Gets to State first round exit 2004 Hightower loses in the Regional Final to Milby (Nic Playing as a sophmore) - Greg Leaves 2005 Kingwood wins State (Nic Wise) 2006 Kingwood loses State Championship (Nic Wise) So yes he could have won State as a coach! He had been knocking on the door even before his son came to play for him! He chose because of some circumstances that only he knows to WATCH his sons play! Lesson #2 is that Greg was fired from Lee in the early 90's, after being one of the only winning coaches, so he probably had a chip on his shoulder! They actually went from Cellar Dwellar to Playoff team while he was there. 2 out of his five years they qualified for the Playoffs... in a third year he lost a one game playoff to get into the playoffs... After he left.. Lee went back to the cellar.

3rd ward has some nice homes in McGregor but it is not an atractive shool to recruit. Player for Player Bellaire is WWWWAAAAYYYY more talented than Yates... But I bet Yates would beat them 9 times out of 10... Mostly because of Wise and his style of play! Bellaire has 3 BIG TIME D1 prospects on its tream.

Wise did not head coach when Nic was playing his last two years. He was at Hightower before hand and was winning . He was State and nationally ranked when he had Lenny Smith, U of H, there. He went three rounds deep with Nic on his team. He resigned to watch his kids play and Nic went to Kingwood. Personally I would have kept coaching and my sons would have played for me. But he wanted to step down and be there like a Dad I guess. Nic's freshman year at Hightower.. Started two seniors, two sophmores and a freshman and finished the year in the top 15 and had a good playoff run. I was surpurised when he left as well, but he stated that his sons were the reason. I remember the team so well because Nic had given Arizona a verbal in 8th grade, so I took the time out to go see exactly who this kid was.

LOL, yeah, I am not that fast but boy do I hit hard! I will have to watch out for you dayton! -
Don't forget Blue that this little ol area currently has one kid in the Big 12, one in the Big Ten, and one in conference USA. All are contributers and one is the teams leading scorer. I would say that is not bad for a small area like SETX!

More than you fair share... The last good team you guys had was the one led by Hipolito (spelling?) That kid could flat out play. I think he graduated in 2000. You guys were a tough out then! -

Just making sure... I did not say I was going to attack you at all, I said don't address me if you need to call me names. And if you were calling me names the "built like that" is because I know you would not say that in person. I apologize for the misunderstanding. -
Come on Short...Barely DI, wow, most teams wish they had a juco player here or there, this team has many college prospects. Sure this coach has contributed, maybe even can coach a little. But all of these kids did not attend the feeder schools of Yates. Just did not happen. he kind of does it the same way his kid ended at Kingwood..Moved couple of times to get the right fit.Where is the best chance my kid or these other kids have a chance to get together and win a championship??? Really no big deal, the UIL allows it, and its really the UIL at fault..Just saying a crop of AAU talent makes a coach look preety good huh...Do you agree with that?
Again... You are wrong! Nic Wise played at Hightower under his father. They were State ranked with plenty of talent to boot, he could have stayed there and coached both sons to titles. Hightower is still a very good program with plenty of talent to this day, and he could have easily built a team around Nic. Greg quit coaching because he had two sons playing ball and wanted to watch them in their high school years. Kingwood was good but there were schools that had much better talent than Kingwood. Singletary and Wise made a strong High school tadem for sure. But he chose Kingwood to live because, I THINK, the coach. He is a classy guy and teaches defense really well. That was the hole in Nic's game and the Kingwood coach was the man to fill it. But Nic pushed that team over the hmp from being good to being GREAT. Kingwood year in and year out is one of the best coached teams in Texas. I do agree that there is opportunity in Houston to get a kid from another district to move into your district. Family ties as well as the low income make a perfect way to move. Most low income parents are on housing or in appartments. Which makes it easy to move aound. BUT why would anyone in there right mind choose 3rd Ward to move into so their kids can play ball? Easily the highest chrime rate in houston comes from this area. There is really no up-scale part of the area... Even the colleges are right smack in the middle of the ghetto. Athletes have BEEn there, but usually lean towards football, with Greg there things may have changed! If you have the money there are plenty of better places to move your kid. Why choose a school with low testing scores and high chrime? You tell me where it makes sense?

They are the only team in the National top 50 WITHOUT a national top 150 rated kid. This is a heck of a team but you may not hear a thing about these kids after high school... They will fade into obscurity. Joseph Young is the only kid with a next level game, that could actually make some noise on a Providence squad. But Peters is a 6' guy in a PG's body with no PG skills (he can barely dribble). Darius Gardner is a sub 6' point guard that will be a decent contributer on a small D1... But I tell you that he is not better than any of the Hancocks or Skip Jackson. They had decent careers but aren't Pro prospects just like Gardner. The only other kid that may do a little bit is the 6'3" newly starting Elton Roy, but he took a long time to develop. He was highly rated in the Houston area out of middle school, but feel off the map by under performing. So yes I say Wise coaching is a BBBBIIIIGGGG part of their success.
I agree... his coaching is a big part. He was also successful at Kingwood, where his son played for him. But talent does play a part.... since you know them so well... I'm sure you know he convinced a couple of players with family that have Yates ties to come and play. Addressing another point on this thread... Once again... no one wants or wanted JY to stop playing or play with less intensity...
He NEVER coached at Kingwood.
Yep Dove, Not necessary, but there is a difference, it was one time... Yates continues to do it..record, who cares about that..Nobody...just win , go undefeated, win back to back and do it right. 16pts is not what I would call an embarassment...135 pts is a little different. Until you've been in a situation where someone does not pull the dogs off, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND...it is plain unsportsman-like and classless..hes filling his ego, but not smart enough to understand that it's not his coaching that makes them good...My sister could win big with that group, and she thinks the offense stays on one end, and the defense stays on the other, like backin the day.
Teamfirst, you are ill-informed. This guy has won with more than just this Yates team. He was nationally ranked and pretty darn tough with Hightower as well. He did not win the big one there but he has with Yates. They have been dominating since he arrived. Look at the record books and find out where they were before he got there. They hadn't won that district in years and don't even mention a true playoff run. They were considered a football school! Yes your sister can take this polished group of well coached kids and win but could she have taken them from freshman and built this powerhouse? Let me answer that for you... NO!!!!

Sir, I know that you are not calling me names because trust me when I tell you that you are not built like that! Stay in your place and this will be friendly internet chatter! Other than that don't even address me! It would have been nice to back off, but they did not. SO! It is what it is. The district did not take any action and the show goes on. I hope they show more pity in the future so that the moral police can back off a little. Personally, I could care less about final scores, I am all about W's and L's. And I wish my team had more of the W's this year. I hate being below .500. Go Jags! -

In fact I say we don't make it out of January... What a brutal schedule coming up! All RPI top 50 and higher except a dangerous Iowa State team in Ames and a OK State team in Lloylde Nobel! Those away games make those two teams even tougher! 1/13 Iowa State 1/16 TA&M 1/18 @ Kansas SU 1/23 @ UCONN 1/27 TTU 1/30 Baylor 2/1 @ OK State Talk about a meat grinder of a schdule. If we com out with only 2 losses it would be a BIG TIME accomplishment. -

Of course now we'll get the comparison from you of an area that has 400,000 population to an area with 4 million. ::)
Not thuis year Blue, but this area has fielded great talent before and will do it again!

Call it what you want, I did not write the article. The first Article is very good, the second statement is just input from another article. However, the sensitivity in todays sports kills me. The sports were created with the gladiator type of mind-set. Absolute domination and survival. Football, basketball, track, etc. you name it and it is all about dominating the opposing team. I for one believe in demoralizing a team and sending messages to future opponents. Having played sports I remember how demoralizing it was to have someone "call off the dogs" and completely stop playing. It was like they are so much better than us that they could put the waterboy in, that is [glow=red,2,300]more[/glow] embarrassing IN MY OPINION. PITY is the true demoralizer! -

Is No. 5 Yates showing bad sportsmanship in its lopsided wins? by ESPN Rise's Ronnie Flores No. Before you think we're insensitive to running up scores or don't care about sportsmanship, allow us to explain. Unbalanced scores happen every week in high school basketball, especially on the girls' side. Yates (Houston, Texas), No. 5 in the ESPN RISE FAB 50, just happens to be a deep, press-oriented team whose third line of players (10-15) is talented. Many of the nation's top teams just came off competitive holiday tournaments, and it's usually blowout city for the top teams when league/conference play starts. Coach Greg Wise would never tell his players to go half speed, and you can bet the bench players are trying to do everything in their power to earn minutes for tight games down the line. The Yates-Lee game produced national headlines because the Lions' point total set a single-game state record (170) and because of the bad blood that brewed in the second half. In fact, we think the referees' decision to not allow substitutions after the rhubarb was worse than Wise's decision to keep the foot on the gas. -

Just a bigger bulls-eye on them now... And with a tough road ahead, their first loss will happen by early February. On a lighter note, I think this is the first #1 ranking in the history of the basketball program. -

I know Hamilton did it a few games back when he got pulled for bad shooting, but Hamilton still doesn't have the track record of JBROWN. Hopefully he wakes up because Barnes will show him that he doesn't need him. I hope it was more about him being down on himself and his performance instead of an attitude with the coach. I am looking forward to Rick Barnes' training staff changing his body and adding some expolosiveness to his game. If he keeps his head on, that staff will make him into a new player by season start of next year! -

The other problem is that in most high school games a 30 point lead can be erased.... It in the end doesn't sound fair either! -
Suggestions for mercy rule
shorttexas1 replied to formercaveman's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
The only reason baseball has a Mercy rule is because, unless you retire the inning the other team has no way of competing. In basketball/football, once the other team scores, there is the opportunity allowed for the other team to score!
