Texas High School Football Preseason Top 40
shorttexas1 replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
That is crazy!! Lake Travis loses half the D, the blue chip starting QB, The top wideout and still get # 2, because of what they did last year!!!!! Central well, we just lost in the sauce and every team in our district is ranked above us??? -
"Be a champion in life" I like that! ;D

They are small, Short. Looks like our O Line will only average 250-260 this year. Not sure if we will be able to push you guys around like we have gotten used to. All good things come to an end... I remember Central doing some pushing at one time too! -

You are 30 plus... kids start looking small when you get THAT old! Don't forget most blue chip line backers leave high school around 190-200 and finish college around 230-250! -

Central Football Opens With New Coaches

I like what Wash said about the spread... He wants to throw the ball not continuously run out of the spread... I like the throwing spread and loathe the running one! -

Its is all about who coaches the spread and the talent you put in it in the right places. If he can make it work... I am down.. Almost every 4A or 5A State champ in the last decade has run some variation of the spread! -

SINGING: Jaguars ROOP, ROOP, ROOP, ROOP ROOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
I think he will unless he is a lottery pick. I just don't see an undersized two-guard being a lottery pick unless his name is Ben Gordon or Allen Iverson... And notice that it took the 3 and 2 years respectively to get into the lottery and they were widely believed to be scoring point guards (unlike Avery - SG)... The limitations on them are overwhelmingly obvious and Avery will have the same problems.

Gulley rarely exploited his inside game while in high school... He mostly went to slashing to the rim and taking 15 ft jump shots. Yes he has a large frame and was one of the strongest players in the area but he rarely played as a post-up player! His natural position is 2-guard but he has to get a better work-out ethic, tends to have weight issues, though he is not a "fat" kid. He has a high level of skill, but his outsid shot is not consistant. He reminds me of Jeremy Long!

I know Brown played in summer competition with Stevie's team in the Louisiana Tourny... That always has top notch talent!!! But it is nothing more than glorified AAU ball, not playing in a system and not playing much defense!!!!

Thanks Aces... Actually my assesment only previewed the guards because we were talking about J Brown. Notice I did not get into forwards!!! Forwards are actually my final reason why Brown might be fighting for playing time... I think James and Hamilton spend alot of time at small forward or 3 which forces UT to play two guards line-up. I know Hamilton is good and a better scorer than James but his handle has the same problems that Jame's current handle has. I think he has a better chance to improve it though!!! Plus he is not as aggressive and athletic as James under the boards... So he WILL play alot of small forwrd! Currently I am stuck believeing somehow Avery will start... So I don't see Hamilton starting... Pittman James Hamilton Avery Lucas This is just not as strong as... Pittman Johnson James Avery Lucas With a KILLER bench that will feature Chapman, Hill Wangmene Hamilton Mason, Ward, Williams, Brown Balbay Would outright win the Southland... I know that Williams is 6'6" but he is a guard!!!

OK!!!! But I am first to admit that souteast Texas has not been strong as it was in the 90's with the larger schools... Central, Westbrook, and Memorial have all dissapointed. After a hiatus Silsbee has begun to come around, HJ comes to play, Kountze has not been strong, but overall small school ball just doesn't get the recognican!!! He doesn't have to like any one of our schools, this board would be boring if we all had the same views and no contrast!!! Well it is not my battle, back to the thread!!!! -

All viruses are fed and mutated some where... Most where once helpful! I believe you all have turned an opinionative person into the anti-Christ... Yes he is cocky, bold, and abrasive, but you all play into it and become the same if not worse!! None of you are "good guys' in that mess... I personally think all of you add value to this board including the virus as you have named him. You guys instigate situations too!!!!! He is far from 100% right, but you all are just as far!!!! -
I think this year Central has its best chance in years to beat the Brook!!! But we will see how that comes out!
-
Great comment BadNDN... What do these people expect... Play the best to be the best... If you play down you are catagorizing your kids before it starts!!! The fact that the preseason has no impact on playoff elgibility would push me to play at least one hard game every year that someone excepts my team!!!! You can go 0-3 in the preseason and still be the number one team in your district and be play-off bound!

If AJ performs it wont matter, Scouts these days find talent at little small town D2 schools!!! The Coogs are big time D! and have a bowl chance each year... AJ must be a kid that loves home and did not want to be too far away! Personally I would have chosen Texas but it is hard er there to become a star than it is in Houston.. The competition is thick in Longhorn Country, I have seen great talent go there and get lost in the mix... Maybe he is smarter than you think! -
OK no look!!!! U need to do a little research... Wheatly wrote that book!

Actually, Lutheran is currently enrolled in three area tournaments... They wll drop one if they get into another larger tourny... Eventually I hope you guys all get over this little bickering that you all do... It is kind of getting old... I bet if the you all try, you can do it!!!! -
I have been looking at the UT situation very hard... J Brown a year away from the game will have stiff competition for a role on this, the deepest team that Texas has had in the modern era. Usually Texas has no more than 7 quality players, now they are almost North Carolina deep. The starting five is up in the air depending on Mason and Balbay... Even though, it will be hard to unseat a three year starter I think Mason may be pushed to sixth man! Staring Line-up? Pittman - he is lock Johnson - he is getting better by the year James - another lock Avery - his scoring will push him past Mason, and he may be just as good on defense Lucas - Better offense will push Balbay to the bench even though I think Balbay could be great if his jumper works he is so explosive! Starting Line-up 2nd possibility! I really don't like this line-up because it’s small AGAIN Pittman James - maybe he will never be a consistent small forward Mason - because this will make him a four year starter Avery Lucas Top Guards off the bench Mason - Unless Barnes goes three starting Guards Balbay - Back-up point guard Ward - Was really beginning to come into his own during the tourney Shawn Williams - 6'6" guard that plays within himself and has a great three ball Brown - Just don't see him moving the pile above him... He has to overcome a year away from the sport and some pretty good talent If Mac Brown Starts three guards it give Brown more of a chance to crack the line-up, but I can't help but think Jordan Hamilton and James will steal some time at the 3 and cause even fewer available minutes. I am not saying that Balbay, Ward, or Williams are better than Brown, but those kids have not missed a year of competitive ball! This is Just my assessment!
