CAN MEMORIAL MATCH UP WITH HIGHTOWER?
shorttexas1 replied to bacbone9's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Church! -
You SE Texans need to get out more! Are you serious? ....HOUSTON YATES/WHEATLEY rivalry goes back to the 1940's!!...This little Silsbee/HJ deal JUST got going when Silsbee went 3A in 2002-03. How about Dallas Lincoln/Dallas Kimball...You cannot compare DUKE and UNC to Silsbee-HJ!! WOW....There are BIGGER and LONGER LIVED rivalries in the state of Texas. :...wow. Yes Yate Wheatly is a BIG one... SOC/Lincoln in Dallas. Duncanville/Desoto in Dallas. SA Masidon and SA Jay. Waltrip/Wheatly. It is some deep routed ones out there with teams that are in the State top 20 team annually! Even Ozen vs. Houston has become bigger!

Yates gets over the hump on the press alone... Eventhough Ozen has the guards to beat that press... But will they? -
CAN MEMORIAL MATCH UP WITH HIGHTOWER?
shorttexas1 replied to bacbone9's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Rilvaries mean a bunch... Kids come to play cross town teams harder. They play each other every year, at least twice a year so coaches have extra added knowledge on how to play them. For example. Central played Ozen close last year in a game but they were no where near better than Ozen or even close. At half time of the football game this past year WB was only up by 7 pts over Central... But Central was not on WB level. I have seen PNG upset Ned or NED upset PNG when the other team has been more dominant. The playoffs are real but cross town rivalries are just as potent. I wish the best for PA but my belief is that Hightower wins! -
CAN MEMORIAL MATCH UP WITH HIGHTOWER?

When you watched Hightower 40 of his starting 5 were suspended and two of his top boys were playing football (going to State). The kids were back for District, now they are strong. Travis played them close in both regular season games, but that is a rivalry and really can't be compared to the playoffs. I think Hightower wins this one. PA thinks they know Greens scheme ,but they never listenned long enough to learn it! -
*Kenny Harrison Named New Memorial Head Coach*
shorttexas1 replied to outanup's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I think he will do just fine. -
OK! Let's give Kenny a chance to play his style and run his team... He has never led a team. He has always been an assistant. He may have all new ideas and stregnths that you guys don't know about. Don't forget he was one of the best High School players to come out of PA and went on to play ball at UT! He has been around good coaching. ANd you ought to see how the kids relate to him. I think he could get something out of the kids on pure motivation. I was at a BBall game against Brook and the entire football team set around Kenny and he led the cheers. They respect and look up to Kenny. He may can draw something out these kids that others haven't.

I am going to agree with Dickie. I believe only Gulley and Breon could play D1 university ball, even though I am not sure how they would perform in BIG schools. But if Gulley could adapt a good work ethic he could play with anyone. And Breon has grown so much with his skill level. Alot of teams could use an ultra quick, lane driven, finishing at the hoop young man. Lopez could play some ball somewhere but his height and his high school program really holds him back. 6'7" doesnt always have to play small forward in college. There is a girth of 6'7 PF that are really good in college D1, i.e. Carl Landry (wisconsin), Gary Johnson(texas), Craig Smith(boston college), Clarence Mathews(tennessee state), Paul Maslip(La Tech), Taylor Griffin(oklahoma), I could go on forever. OK lets kill this Shannon debate now. I told DIckie I like this kid as a bench player with the possibility to be a starter by a sophmore on a D1 JUNCO team. I say again I actually like his game. But DOMINATE? Do you guys watch JUNCO ball? Alot of these kids are all world without the grades or exposure in high school. There are plenty kids at the JUNCO level that could do some things at a D1 program. Shannon would NOT dimonate any bodies basketball. The kid is good in high school at a 3A program and doesn't dominate. Dominate at sub 6' is Tommy-Mason Griffin(Madison), TJ Ford(Willowrifge), DJ Augustine(Hightower), Nic Wise(Kingwood), Byron Eton (Dallas Lincoln), Bryon Hopkins (Dallas Lincoln). Shannon does not add up to that.

I would give the D a 10 for the year... No team put up big numbers on them... The teams that put up big numbers on Central had the help of the offense, turnovers, inability to mve the ball, etc. The offense overall was about a 5... In the playoffs it stepped up to a 5.5 (still too many turn overs though they moved the ball better).

I am dissapointed but that is the way the cracker crumbles... Great job Jags!

Why is PA Memorial getting no love on here?

Who will be the best Quaterback in Beaumont next season?
shorttexas1 replied to cdurio's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
We don't know what Centrals identity will be under the new coach! -
Scola aint too cute... Put him on the list!
-
You guys smoking dope.... Sorry!... But the Rockets are playing well because McGrady is out. They would be doning the same with Skip there. I think the trade was good but I am not sold on Brooks as a starting NBA PG....
-
Even if we got Willie we still would be lacking a PG!
-
They did go after Warren hard, they courted him... But Warren is a Dallas boy and has equal ties to OU and Texas.... He chose OU not Texas! Barnes lost every recruitment battle of last year except for the player that would eventually not qualify. Brown is in PA with his pants slabbing off his butt, failing to get his mind together to get into school... It is truelly a sad sight... Wasted talent!
-
Actually I believe it would have been ugly if Griffin would have stayed in the game... The game plan was meant to stop Griffin... And that was happenning. I think it gave OU an advantage when Griffin went down because their game plan had to change and UT did not adjust for that change. OU became a running team and almost beat Texas.... Instead of a Griffin first they went shoot first!

Why is PA Memorial getting no love on here?
shorttexas1 replied to Djones8301's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Yeah, It is no wonder why Green won Big at Central and now is winning Big at Hightower. Both 5A programs in tough districts but could not do it at Memorial in a tough district. Green was at the Jags when kingwood, Humble, Baytown Lee, and Brook were at their best! Humble had three D1 signees all taller that 6'5" one year and one of those kids was a PG! Trust me when I say it is not ALL Henderson that has turned arround PA. It is the breed of kid that he has playing for him now. He could not do much with some highly talented teams at Lincoln in 4A on his first SETX tour. But now the kids have Memorial pride, not just Lincoln or TJ pride. It is much less bickering between the kids because the only identity they have is Memorial. Also, the district is not that powerhouse district that they have been in in the past. Westbrook is not strong, NS is good but have been very beatable, and from there who is tough? Timing means alot, and look at the area rankings by coaches... Only Strake (#1) is in the top ten, with Hightower (GREEN), FB Bush (same district as GREEN), and Kingwood in the top 15... So they can make some noise in the first two rounds before seeing any of these teams.... And the character kids that Memorial has there now helps alot... These kids just want to play ball! -

I will tell you EXACTLY what has happened...When Memorial was created, they made a HUGE mistake in trying to "start over" and not embrace Port Arthur's west side and retaining all of that tradition...BIG MISTAKE...They killed interest along with tradition, therefore you lose players to Beaumont Kelly (J'Covan Brown in 9th and 10th grade) Nederland, PNG, and other surrounding schools that would have NEVER left Lincoln..PARENTS would not allow that to happen when Lincoln was around..They should have followed Ozen's lead when they "resurrected" Hebert...Same colors (blue and gold) same mascot (Panthers) and they simply named the school after someone that the entire community knew and loved, Clifton J. Ozen....If Memorial's colors were purple and gold, the mascot were bumblebees, and they would have named the school JAMES GAMBLE HIGH, they would not have missed a beat!! THATS the reason why they fell so far, so fast...They lost the WEST SIDE of Port Arthur... I understand what you are saying, Dicky, truely I do. But you can't name the only school in PA after a Lincoln coach and use Lincoln colors and mascot. There was a school named Thomas Jefferson also that was involved in the consolidation. There has to be some consideration for that school also. I think that it was handled about as good as could be expected. You really can't compare Ozen to Memorial. Memorial is the only school in PA, where as Ozen is just a newer version of Hebert, there still is West Brook and Central. Now if you were to merge all three of those schools, then you could compare it to the merger of Lincoln and TJ. Don't forget about SFA..... Anyway, the boat was missed during consolidation as far as coaching goes. Suggs got away. Green wasn't ready to step up to 5A bball, the girls programs suffered(except for Bball as long as Tae-Tae was there). Painting PAM purple and gold would've ment anything without a good staff in place..... When PAM first opened, there were some digruntled parents who took their kids else where( a subject for a later date). On the surface, it seem to be a great loss(J'Covian's brother comes to mind) but as time went on, alot of these kids didn't amont to a hill of beans after high school. Alot of parents tell me it's about their kids education and I feel them on that but at the end of the day, running away from the problem doesn't do anybody any good in the long run.... SFA you missed the boat... There was mnbo step up for Green... Central was 5A at the time he left them. Central went to state and was a factor in the region every year. Green knows 5A ball but PA couldn't get with his discipline style... That is what hurt the program... The FANS themselves! -
Texas at Texas A&M Game Thread
shorttexas1 replied to Bobcatfan4life's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
NO sir you are wrong... Colleges around the world face that same problem... Barnes was down on recruiting two straight years... That is why they haven't reloaded. The bad thing is that only bigs have come to UT in the last two years... They need guards. Mason can't shoot, Balbay can't stay on the floor, Abrams should not be constantly running off screens being the focal point of the team, Pittman gotta stay out of foul trouble, and James has to come to play ever night. They should start Balbay, Abrams, James, Johnson, Pittman.... The should be played inside-out not outside-in.... -
Kids/youngmen, blah,blah.... I have no dog in the hunt, yes I have been a Central fan but I have only seen them twice this year... I have seen Ned 4 times, and Ozen 4 times... The Boyd KIDis better, hands down! Give me a break... None of those kids are better than the freshman at central or the Boyd kid at Ozen... As of late the Boyd kid has been playing really big. Either one of these kids would be all world at Lumberton, LCM, PNG, Nederland, Vidor, or Livingston! First off, these are young men about to graduate not kids anymore! You have your opinion and I have mine. I would venture to say we are both a little biased. I guess I am trying to give credit to the team play of this group because on any given night they have stepped up or else Nederland would not be in the playoff hunt. I only saw Central once and that was the loss to Nederland. The freshman didn't play much so I can't really give him a fair assessment and Bond simply gets overshadowed by the top three for OHS.
