I knew it was going to happen. The refs had to get into the conversation. Why not just give Yates credit. They were down by almost 20 points and the fans were calling home telling their friends the game was over in the first half. Man, this is a nationally ranked team who has played big name schools. Do rankings mean anything? It depends on how you use the ranking to your mental advantage. Like it or not, Yates has played some big name schools and tournaments. This provides a tremendous mental advantage to the team, if used properly. You don't read Blue... I actually gave Yates credit for adjusting their style to the way the game was called and Ozen did not do that!!! Yates won fair and square Ozen did not meet the challenge... They had every opportunity to win the game and let Yates off the hook! I tried to tell Dickie in an earlier post on another topic that you must withstand Yates third quarter push.. Everytime I have watched them this year they make a strong push in the third quater! Jacoby did outplay Jones but he didnt step up when it counted. Open shoot to win the game and he choked and shot an air ball... He probaly should have went to the cup to create a better shot and an opportuunity to draw a foul or at least get a rebound... The air ball really hurted... The kid will grow from that experience and I hope I have the opportunity to watch him on the next level.

Dickie will be back to tick all yall off!

Ozen was up by as many as 16 but like I said in my earlier post you have to beat Yates in the third quarter. They always have big third quarters.. The same thing happenned when they oplayed those national teams... Down most of the game and take the lead in the third and go on and win... Ozen really had their foot on Yates neck but then went away from Decarlos in the second half... The kid had ten points after the first period and looked unstoppable... Dove... Anthony has all the talents to be a great small forward but he tends to take plays off... If someone really gets into his head and coaches him... He could be a great!

What you all don't understand is that Beaumont went through a down period of attention during the late 80's through the 90's. Like it was forgotten that there was talent here. We had no AAU team for exposure and we could not get out of the first two rounds of the Playoffs for lack of coaching... Green started the change by putting Central in the regional tournement three years in a row and actually making it to state... Boutte finished off by building a dynasty! Skip and Douby at Central were not even the best players in Beaumont that year and here near the best in the decade!!!! But they had that X-factor of having a great coach!
-
Their are more good teams in 5A but as far as the elite 4A is just as good most years... The talent in beaumont has been good enough to do it too... There have been class bigs in Beaumont for years... Lately we have been missing that 6'9" or taller guy but in the '90s there were two or three at both schools that could really play!

Yes that is a deafening chant!

Yeah and 19-4A is weaker. And Yates has won ONE title in 10 years.. ...NO team would get beat by 100 in 22-4A...NONE. I guarantee on a yearly basis, with the exception of THIS year, Central would DOMINATE that district...Lets take Ozen out of the equation for a sec...Central would dominate, Dayton would get in and Nederland would too...GUARANTEE.. Yeah 19 4A has been weak for a while... Waltrip has been the only team to make noise and that was in the late 90s! And yes the Jag teams of those times would have beat the breaks off of Waltrip!!! Not JUST Waltrip, but check this out; Thats why I say Houston ISD ball has taken a nosedive in recent years..Here are the region 3 winners for the last 15 years: 1993 Milby (5A) Lincoln (4A),/ 1994 *Willowridge (5A) Lincoln (4A), /1995 Humble (5A), *Lincoln (4A), /1996 Dulles (5A) Bay City (4A), /1997 Humble (5A), Wheatley (4A)/ 1998 Clear Lake (5A), *Waltrip (4A) /1999 Bmt Central (5A), Lincoln (4A)/ 2000 *Willowridge (5A), PA Jefferson (4A)/ 2001 *Willowridge (5A), *Ozen (4A)/ 2002 Hightower (5A), Ozen (4A) /2003 Hightower (5A), Ozen (4A)/ 2004 *Milby (5A) *Jones (4A) /2005 *Kingwood (5A), Wheatley (4A)/ 2006 Kingwood (5A), Angleton (4A) /2007 Kingwood (5A), Ozen (4A)....*- (won title) Now, outside of 2004, which was two teams led by bonafide stars, LOOK at how HISD has fared...The suburbs have taken over inner city basketball...Kashmere lost in the regional finals in 99 to Lincoln, Wheatley lost in 2001 in the final, and Worthing last season...Props for doing that..23 high schools and just 3 state champs in the last 15 years? Its a new day, and HISD has been left in the dust. What a run for SETX... From '99 through '03 we had a south east tx team in either 5A or 4A to win the region. -
See, thats all I wanted to hear! You good in my book again ;D I was sitting on side of James Waldon of the 72 State team and he was suprised of how good theyt were doing.. He an I were both amazed by the talent at Smiley... Indivisually Smiley is as talented as any in the state but can they put it together?
-
And another thing... I have watched wheatly beat big teams with five guards and I know size means nothing to the Wildcats!!!!!!! The mere shot of a stadium filled with purple will scare most!!! Let alone its Fifthward purple!
-
Your credibility has really spiraled downward in my book if you are trying to talk about Wheatley. Obviously you know nothing of the tradition, the area, nor the rich basketball history surrounding Wheatley High. Through her doors have walked some of the greatest basketball legends in Texas. The legacy still continues today. It doesn't matter if Wheatley has had 6'10" Dwight Jones to little Alvin Brooks, the Wildcats have taken on all challengers, on to this day remain a basketball force that demands respect for their accomplishments. There are not too many schools around today who have the lasting power as the mighty PHYLISS WHEATLEY W-I-L-D-C-A-T-S. The name itself would strike fear into the opposing teams, thereby giving Wheatley a 10-point mental advantage before the game started. We laugh in your face. For you to think a mere size can stop the Wheatley machine. :D I know and respect the traditionand the grit and scrappiness of Wheatly, but this is the first year that I have watched them and did not come away impressed... I saw Smiley and felt that they had a better package... I love Wheatly and their fans... Even a Wheatly Alumni agreed with me.

I would not say before Ozen oppenned, I would say before we got a coach like Boutte in the area!!!! There has been some big time talent in this area without the results over the past 20 yrs... Lets talk Damion Sweets, Parish and Golden Coners. I remember the talent on Westbrook and Central in 96... WB had two 6'9" players in the post, had Omars lil ZBrother at the three with parish and Jarvis at the guards... Central had 7' Walt, John Ruffin and keith Carbon with decent atheletic guards... The Wb should have won state that year!
-
I agree with both players being very skilled but I promise you Lopez would be real effective in a system... Fast break ball is much tougher because once the break is stopped the offense goes stagnant... This usually leads to turn overs of contested shoots. It is much easier to play where you know where the ball is going to be, there is instruction on how to create a good shot, you know where is your spot on the couurt so two or more players won't be in the same place at the same time, and you know the gaps that that scheme is supposed to create. Fast break ball is difficult because the game is not all fast breaks... Even there is a scheme on how to run a fast break correctly to create the best shott and still not leave yourself open in transition... This is a team sport that is strongly based on coaching... A good coach can turn an averager kid into a good player and turn a good player into a great!!!!
-
Fast break ball doesn't work at all times... The game is not all fast breaks boy!! There is a half court and any have decent team with a decent coach would not allow a fats break team to play to that stregnth. That is why Ozen is still in the playoffs and WB is not... Coaching, game plan, and scheme matters... That is why Brook has not gone deep in the play-offs even when all the talent was there...
-
Please!... Donte show his skill in a head to head match-up without a coach and almost came out on top...! Breon makes less mistakes on the court because Boutte runs an offensive scheme. WB's coach never calls a play or run a scheme... Those kids just play with no guidance at all... Breon is not closeto the skill level of Lopez! ozen does run a system that doesn't allow 4 1 on 1 match up its easier to play w/o a system in play thanks for proving my point Your basketball knowledge is very minimal... Playing without a system is not easy... One on one play does not exist... Its usually one one two.. three.. or four... If a team allows you to beat them on one on one play then that coach is stupid... Have you ever heard the term "help side defense" ??? here is where it is the same: # 1 If Breon breaks down a player off the dribble and gets into the lane and its open he will score the basket. So does Lopez! # 2 Breon teammates open the lane for him by being in the right position... Lopez's teamates are running the court aimlessly! Here is the difference: # 1 If Breon gets into the lane and the defense collapses like its suppose to then he will dish to a player that is in the specified position for that play... Lopez doesn't have that so he has to guess where his teammate will be. # 2 With no scheme to run in the final seconds of a close game the kids have to guess how to create a shot... With a scheme the kids the coach will put the kids in a position to have a good shot... Yes I proved your point... I proved that it was wrong!

Just tried to say the kid was good... Right now it is his time.. JCovian's time has come and gone... We may never know how good J. Brown is because of his horrible track record... But DeCarlos will surely have the opportunity unless injury!! -
Thanks Dickie!! That was a crazy statement... He doesn't know that Vincent went amost undefeated two years in a row (lost one game in a tournement their eigth grade year) with Lopez and L. Whittington. These kids both average 25 points a game in middle school... They were phenomenal! Trust me if there was recruiting the Ozen Team would be: Willie Jefferson Jacoby Joseph Jamar Gulley Decarlos Frank Donte Lopez

This is not a basketball question... As long as he is eligiable age does not matter.... If UIL lets him play then let him play... I am pretty sure he nor anyone else needs you to remind him of possible past failures... Comend him for doing better now and do not condemn him for past mistakes!!!! -
