  5. Media Contact: Aaron Reed, (512) 389-8046, [email protected] Jan. 30, 2007 Freeze Event Fishing Ban for Selected Coastal Areas Possible First Week of February AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Coastal Fisheries biologists and game wardens are preparing for a possible saltwater freeze event fishing ban the week of Feb. 3. While long-term forecasts are mixed, there currently appears to be the potential of an extended freeze event on the Texas Gulf coast sometime between Feb. 4 and Feb. 11. The TPW Commission in January 2005 approved a rule allowing the department to make 21 easily accessible, deep water refuges off-limits to anglers during freeze events. According to Larry McKinney, Ph.D., TPWD coastal fisheries division director, Texas has about two million acres of bays and estuaries that are susceptible to freezes. He said that there were three major freezes during the 1980s, including one in 1989 when the temperature at Brownsville dropped to 16 degrees and an estimated 11 million fish were killed. Historically, freezes along the Texas coast have occurred about every 15 years. “We don’t yet know how far south the Arctic air mass predicted for next week will reach, and we also can’t say with any certainty that we’ll have to implement the freeze event fishing ban,†McKinney said Monday. “But we’re getting ready for a worst-case scenario, and we’re asking anglers and coastal residents to please check back on our Web site over the weekend and to look for fishing ban notices at boat ramps and around deep water refuges if temperatures do dip below freezing.†Fisheries managers will again evaluate weather forecasts Friday, Feb. 2, and if a freeze event fishing ban is planned for any portion of the coast, a notification will be posted under “Hot Topics†on the TPWD Web site. In addition to killing game fish in shallow bay waters, a hard freeze can also cause surviving fish to congregate in a few deeper areas where they become sluggish and prone to capture. Game fish, including spotted seatrout, red drum, sharks, snook and triple tail may only be taken by pole and line, and it is unlawful to take or attempt to take a fish with one or more hooks attached to a line or artificial lure used in a manner to foul-hook a fish (snagging or jerking). The high mortality that a freeze can cause may deplete fish stocks for years, according to McKinney. Protection of the surviving fish during the few days when they are especially vulnerable to capture would likely shorten the time period for overall recovery of coastal species, especially spotted sea trout. McKinney urged anglers and coastal residents to report any fish kills or large numbers of sluggish or cold-stunned fish to 1-800-792-1112. A complete list of coastal areas that may be closed to fishing during freeze conditions may be found in the TPW Outdoor Annual online.
  6. BIGDADDYDAVEHJ's post on the deer season thread got me to thinking. One of my favorite things to hear while I am deer hunting is a flock of woodducks coming through the trees. Squealin', twistin, and turning. You see a million things that might be a deer, then all of the sudden you see what you know for sure is a deer. Isn't it amazing how many things look like a set of antlers or deer head, only to find out its a stump or a palmetto.
  7. I didn't have deer lease this year, but it's looking good for next year got a promising lead. We did get to deer hunt though, myself oldest boy got a nice 8 point at my brothers lease in Hallettsville.
  8. I saw more deer than ducks. We need to switch hunting spots.
  9. Ain't no doubt about it, that Hall boy can move. I think we will have an answer for that though.
  10. No joke, the bad part is a Ringneck is as tough as a boot. He was probably gonna get it mounted, not eat it. Taxidermy $190 Veterinarian $1500
  11. 2007 TPWD Statewide Public Hearings The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is recommending changes to next year’s hunting and fishing regulations, expanding upon the success of several resource management initiatives. The department is seeking comment on these proposed changes to the state’s hunting and fishing regulations during a series of public hearings. Each year, TPWD considers changes in hunting and fishing regulations to achieve resource management objectives and maximize outdoor recreation opportunities consistent with good stewardship. 13. That's a pretty big claim, that said I do think we will be as good as last year, most likely better. I have said before we will have more speed and better size this coming season. Lots of sophmore's on last years team that will come in with playoff experience.
  14. It's birth place probably does have something to do with it.
  15. Subject: FW: 11point DOE killed December 2,2006 in Southwest AR by Thomas "HOOT" ... When I saw the deer's horns in velvet I remember thinking that is odd. I even asked Kathie if she thought I should take him. The closer it got to us the easier it was to make up my mind. Kathie got turned around and settled just as I made up my mind and I got my gun. At this point neither one of us could tell how big the deer actually was. To both of us it looked to be a 6 or 7 pt, I knew it was legal. I raised my gun to take the shot while I was telling my wife to take the picture and she quickly let me know that she was filming at this point. The next thing she heard was... BOOM!!! For the most part, we have it on film. The gun blast scared my wife so bad that she dropped the camera so you cant see the deer run off, but still we have pretty good clip of film. One shot, right through the heart and the deer ran about 20 yards and we heard it crash. Now it was time to go and see what trophy we had. You guessed it, Kathie also taped the tracking of it. When we approached the deer I knew that velvet this time of year was not right and it did not have the musky odor that most bucks have from the rut. I was scratching my head about this deer, velvet, didn't stink? So I lifted her back leg and I had my answer. IT'S A DOE! Her rack ended up having 11 points. I have heard about them but never thought I would get one. I had just shot an 11 point DOE. I was completely and still am beside myself. So we got her loaded and I took her to my uncles house where he called the game warden. My uncle told him what I had. He said what's your location? He made a 30 min trip in about 15. He arrived and got out of his truck and started looking her over. I lifted her back leg and asked what do you think? He said that is a doe! He got his camera started taking his pictures and he also tagged it for me. His form stated that I had killed an 11 point DOE! I was not dreaming! This is just part of what seemed to be a day that would never end, nor did I want it to. I just wanted to share with you and your readers my Hunt of a Lifetime. Hoot's Little Freak...my 11 point DOE! I am getting her in a full body mount with her tail up! Thanks for your time. Thomas "Hoot" Cox Southwest Arkansas
  16. His brother Ford Smesny is starting DB #14 on the Football team. He is real good baseball player but, I don't think he is playing. Frank is an excellent all-around ball player. Good attitude and all business.
  17. I got to put in a word for Dayton. Great Coaches from the Junior High to the High School. Stewart has a great staff of some good guys. It helps to have a great bunch of kids too.
  18. They are gonna need to be real hot to beat Dayton.
  19. I agree, I watched their JV play last season. Nederland will be right back in it.
  20. Man, I sure hope Dayton makes a showing in Baseball this year, we are gettin treated like the red headed step child again. Reminds me of the beginning of football season. So here is my meager prediction. Dayton will end up on that top ten list, this year.
  21. Calming affect, you say that like you are talking about putting calamine lotion on a festering rash. ;D
