Patriots look for first win against Dayton By Dave Rogers [Hidden Content] Published September 30, 2008 Jerry Stewart didn’t need a three-week vacation from coaching games to tell him what’s wrong with the Dayton offense. “Against Friendswood, we only got the ball in A.J. Dugat’s hands seven times,†the Dayton High football coach said, referring to a 42-21 loss way back on Sept. 5, the last time the Broncos played. “We’re not going to win if he’s not getting it 15 times. “He’s going to get the ball one way or another, even if we have to snap it to him. “He’s the best Friday night ballplayer around here, and I watched Saturday, and there ain’t none on Saturday any better than him. There’s some good people playing (in college on Saturday), but he’s right there with them. “We’ve got to show he’s the best Friday night player by getting him the ball.†It will be up to Goose Creek Memorial’s defense to a) keep the ball from Dugat; and tackle him when he gets it. The test comes up tonight at 7 p.m. when the Patriots host Dugat and his Bronco teammates at Stallworth Stadium. For both teams, it’s the District 19-4A opener and the first game since Sept. 5, before Hurricane Ike caused games to be canceled or postponed the past three weekends. Memorial coach Bret Boyd has plenty of time to study the Broncos. “Not many people have stopped (Dugat) much. Everything we’re doing is on defense will be very aware of him,†Boyd said. “You can’t say you’re going to double cover him because they put him in various situations. You just have to be aware of where he is, because he’ll be around the ball a lot of times.†Dugat has caught 17 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns for the 1-1 Broncos, who fell out of the state’s Top Ten. Quarterback Cody Green has passed for 572 yards and five scores. “They haven’t run the ball much,†Boyd noted. “They’re very talented. Dugat and the quarterback, Green, make them go. They have others that are talented, but if those two are on, you’re in for a long night.†The Patriots are 0-2 and looking for their school’s first-ever football win. They fell hard to Pearland Dawson, 54-14, in their last game with turnovers playing a big part. While Boyd reported that all his varsity players returned from the Hurricane Ike evacuation, Stewart said he’d lost two more starters off a seriously depleted defense. Their houses were hit by falling trees and are unlivable, forcing the players and their families to move out of the district. Other 19-4A games tonight include: Barbers Hill at C.E. King and Crosby at Kingwood Park. Tonight’s games throughout 19-4A were originally scheduled for last weekend, but were delayed at a time when no one knew when area schools would get electricity and resume classes. District teams will play again Saturday night. Barbers Hill (0-2) at C.E. King (1-1), 7 p.m. today “C.E. King is a talented football team. They have some good skill players,†Barbers Hill coach Don Price said. “We have to come out, try to execute, not turn the ball over and don’t give up big plays. “Those are the basic things you try to work on. We just haven’t played in a while.†In pre-Ike losses to 2007 playoff teams Port Neches-Groves and Lumberton, Price’s Eagles averaged less than 200 yards per game on offense, with quarterback Tony Carmona picking up 75 percent of that running or passing. “We just need to be more consistent to execute on offense and defense,†the coach said. “We’re not a real good football team right now.†Directions to C.E. King’s Crenshaw Stadium: Take Beltway 8 north to U.S. 90, go left (west on 90) approximately 2 miles; go right (north) on C.E. King Parkway approximately 1 mile. Crosby (0-2) at Kingwood Park (1-1), 7 p.m. today Like Goose Creek Memorial, Kingwood Park is playing this year without a senior class. But the Panthers did play together as a junior varsity team last year and they opened this season with a win over Houston Sterling before losing to Magnolia West. Crosby lost to Waco University High 14-7 and to Port Neches-Groves 28-27. The last one hurt, because the Cougars had led 14-0 at halftime. “We didn’t quite have our mind right in the second half,†coach Kevin Flanigan said. “Still, we scored with 30 seconds left and had an extra point blocked. “We had the chances. We just didn’t take care of business. I think we were making some good progress before we left (for Ike). Hopefully, they’ll continue where they left off.†Directions to Humble ISD’s Turner Stadium: Take Beltway 8 north to Wilson Road. Turn right, stay on Wilson past Will Clayton Blvd. The school is about another block, on the right.

Hunting is good at Rayburn, how about a little heads-up for a Dayton boy.

King's RB Alvester Alexander has ran for 237 yds and 5 TD's in 2 games. BH doesn't have that many rushing yards total(Dayton is even worse), for that matter only North Forest has better rushing stats. Sounds like he is a force to be reckoned with by any of us. I prefer BH but I think King will be too much. King by 2 TD's.

I assume you gave them 21 points becuase of our suspect secondary. I have a good source that tells me Dayton maybe getting some injured players back this week, 1 of which is a starting safety. -

[Hidden Content] TO: School Administrators FROM: UIL Athletic Office SUBJECT: Techniques and Materials for High School Sports Announcers School administrators should fully utilize school public address systems and exercise care in the selection of school announcers. Good announcers provide a friendly and cordial relationship between competing schools and the general public and assist with crowd control. An announcer should be mature, have good judgment, and be emotionally stable. Many situations arise that require quick judgment and a cool head. A good voice is important; nothing is more annoying than a lot of jumbled words spoken too quickly to be understood. Too much verbalizing also hinders crowd enjoyment of the contest. Guidelines For School Sports Announcers The primary function of a school public address system is to convey pertinent information about the game. Announcers are not part of the cheering section. They should never incite the emotions of the spectators. Information should be given with the same tone concerning both the home team and the visiting team whether they have made a touchdown or scored the winning basket. The announcer should remember at all times that the sole justification for his function is conveying simple, straightforward, unemotional information. When there is nothing significant to announce, silence is golden. All announcements should be authorized by a designated school administrator. There should be no political announcements or advertising of liquor or tobacco. It is advisable to use a cutoff microphone so that nothing will go into the PA system other than what is intended. Many embarrassing situations can be avoided with cutoff mikes. Pertinent Information For All Sports Prior to announcing the starting lineup, announcers may wish to use some of the enclosed pre-game announcements to encourage good sportsmanship and proper treatment of game officials. (Spot Announcements and Public Service Announcements may be used prior, during and following games.) Announce the records of the two competing teams in previous contests and their records of wins and losses during the current season. Announce the starting players and their numbers for both teams, as well as substitutes, their names and numbers, and the names and numbers of the players they replace. Announce the officials and their positions (when pertinent). -

Daytons scoreboard(we needed a new one anyway ;D) is toast but other than that it doesn't seem to bad, lights had what seems to be minor damage. -
No surprise there, I knew he was a hoss. Congrats!
-
Both teams have the last week of reg. season open so that seems like the likely make-up date 11/7. Providing we are on schedule for the rest of the games. Not sure if they are playing Friday against GCM or not, I think they might.

Weekly Migratory Bird Hunting Report - 9/10/2008 Steve Lightfoot, 512-389-4701, [email protected] [Hidden Content] North Zone Dove: Best hunts have been had over plowed sunflowers and cut milo fields. Hunts near Amarillo and counties north have taken good numbers of dove over watering holes in the afternoon. The region received enough rains in August to fill some dry playas. Areas north of Abilene have been solid over row crops and water in the afternoon. Fields north of Fort Worth have seen scattered birds since the opener. A few new birds arrived with the north winds last week. Lamar County saw better shoots in soy beans. Prospects are fair to good. Central Zone Dove: The northern region of the zone is still holding huntable numbers of mourners. The front last week deposited new birds to the area. Harrison, Gregg and Marion county fields have seen best shoots around water in the afternoon. Comanche County fields of sunflowers have been best in the afternoon around water. Best flights of whitewings remain in the San Antonio corridor around Castroville and Hondo. Uvalde hunts have been steady as well. Outfitters have reported better flights in the afternoon. Doves are scattered along the southern end of the zone. Good hunts have been posted near Dayton, Liberty, China and Devers, but since the opener, dove hunting has been fair to good. Outfitters said they lost most of their birds with the rains in late August. Prospects are fair to good. Special White-Winged Dove Area: Last weekend saw good shoots in corn, milo, sunflowers and plowed fields. Those able to hunt water saw great afternoon shoots. Saturday and Sunday are the last days of the special season. As a reminder: afternoon-only hunting is permitted. Rains and winds associated with Hurricane Ike could put a damper on the flight, especially if South Texas receives a direct hit. Teal Prospects: Teal prospects are simple: if you have water, you should have birds when the season opens Sept. 13. Coastal anglers have another variable — where is Hurricane Ike, forecasted to come ashore sometime Saturday, going to make landfall? And, if winds blow at hurricane force, what will that do to the teal in the area for the remainder of the season? Good numbers of teal have been reported along the coast, but water is scarce, especially along the coastal prairies. Some outfitters say they cannot get water from canal systems since farmers are using so much water to pour over second-cropped rice. Those with wells have water, but they paid a heavy price to pump it with farm diesel still hovering around $4 a gallon. Tides have risen on the coast and should rise even more with the approaching storm. That should push new water to barren tidal flats and ponds. Prospects are good for those with water, unless, of course, the hurricane hits somewhere along the middle or upper coast.
