Technically not in our coverage area but I thought some might be interested. Transfer QB Larson gets OK to play at GCM [Hidden Content] By Dave Rogers Published August 26, 2008 The Goose Creek Memorial Patriots scored a football victory this week, and it didn’t even come on the field. Junior quarterback Cody Larson, a late transfer from Sterling, was ruled eligible to play for the Patriot varsity team, principal Al Richard said Monday. Larson is expected to start for GCM in Thursday night’s season opener against Pasadena High. “We’ve played other kids at quarterback, but he’s the best one right now,†Patriot head coach Bret Boyd said. Sophomore quarterback Price Jacobs had been sharing snaps with Larson in practices and scrimmages leading up to the season opener. “Price is not as polished yet as he will be,†the coach said. “Cody came by it a little faster, but I think when it’s all said and done, they’ll both be capable.†Larson had expected to be a backup quarterback at Sterling this season, but that changed after his father, longtime junior high coach Randy Larson, landed a job on Boyd’s staff at Baytown’s new high school. Cody Larson decided to follow his father, even if it meant not playing on the varsity this year. Because the family still lives in the Sterling attendance zone, the quarterback was ineligible to play varsity sports for the Patriots this year without a series of waivers. First, Larson needed a residency waiver from the state University Interscholastic League, which came last week. Similar waivers were required from the Goose Creek school district and the District 19-4A executive committee. Those were obtained after Sterling coach Herb Minyard signed off on a previous athletic participation form, saying that Larson had not been illegally recruited to transfer. Larson’s younger sister, Katie, a ninth-grader, was also granted waivers to move to Goose Creek Memorial. The basketball player is questionable for playing this school year because of a recent knee injury.

Bird Hunters Reminded to get HIP with Licenses
bronco1 posted a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
News Release Media Contact: Aaron Reed, 512-389-8046, [email protected] Aug. 26, 2008 Bird Hunters Reminded to get HIP with Licenses AUSTIN, Texas — With dove season set to open Sept. 1 in the North and Central Dove Zones, hunters are again reminded to be sure they become Harvest Information Program-certified when buying their hunting license. The HIP certification is required in addition to the purchase of the Texas Migratory Game Bird Stamp, $7. That stamp, and all other state stamps, is included in the Super Combo License for $64. The Harvest Information Program maintains a database of all migratory game bird hunters for surveys on harvest of ducks, geese, doves, sandhill cranes and other migratory species. These certified hunters form a pool from which the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service will draw to conduct harvest surveys later in the fall and winter. Not all HIP-certified hunters are surveyed later in the year. License agents are supposed to ask the hunter how many of a particular species, or groups of species, he or she harvested in the prior hunting season. The number the hunter provides (for example, "25 doves, 8 ducks and 10 geese), helps place the hunter into an appropriate strata for scientific sampling by the USFWS. If selected, the hunter will be contacted about participating, and will provide current-year harvest information for the 2008-09 harvest survey. The survey helps wildlife managers determine what the annual harvest has been and how many hunters participated from each state. "This data is very important in the management of these species," said Vernon Bevill, TPWD game bird program director. "Texas ranks number-one among all states in dove hunters and harvest, with over 300,000 hunters taking more than seven million mourning and white-winged doves combined last year." AR 2008-08-26 -
Typically this the cat that people mistake for the Panther, not saying you didn't but usaully this is the case. Jaguarundi (Herpailurus yaguarondi) Texas Status Endangered U.S. Status Endangered, Listed 6/14/1976 Description Jaguarundis is slightly larger than a domestic cat, weighing 8 - 16 pounds. Their coat is a solid color; either rusty-brown or charcoal gray. Life History Jaguarundis move in a quick weasel-like manner. They eat birds, rabbits, and small rodents, hunting during early morning and evening. Although Jaguarundis hunt mostly on the ground, they also climb trees easily and have been seen springing into the air to capture prey. Historical accounts from Mexico suggest that Jaguarundis are also good swimmers and enter the water freely. They are solitary (live alone) except during the mating season of November and December. Jaguarundis are active mainly at night, but also move around during the day, often going to water to drink at midday. They live 16 to 22 years in captivity. Jaguarundis are endangered because the dense brush that provides habitat has been cleared for farming or for the growth of cities. Jaguarundis still exist in Mexico, but they are now very rare in Texas. People in the Lower Rio Grande Valley are working together to plant native shrubs and restore habitat for the Jaguarundi, Ocelot, migrating songbirds, and other animals. Habitat Like the Ocelot, the Jaguarundi is found in dense, thorny shrublands. Distribution It is found in the south Texas brush country and lower Rio Grande valley. Jaguarundis are also found in northern Mexico and central and south America. Other The Jaguarundi is so elusive that researchers have been unable to estimate how many are left in the wild.

Good work Coop, you and the other guys are wonderful Athletic Supporters. ;D ;D -
Believe it or not, I posted that article just to kick the old ant bed. ;D Personal observation: Last Saturday Coach Stewart and Coach Creduer spent at least 20 minutes talking before the scrimmage. Then they moved their conversation over to where the officals were seated and began to talk to the officals. In total they talked between 20 -30 minutes. I am sure in that time span each coach expressed to the other their intentions for the scrimmage. IMO It was just a scrimmage, this time next week it probably will be forgotten. And yes, it did suck losing to Lumberton and I still don't like it, that scrimmage in no way could repair the empty void in my Bronco heart. Hopefully we can meet in the playoffs and then perhaps I could be on my emotional road to recovery.

Dayton takes Lumberton to the woodshed with scrimmage [Hidden Content] By MIKE GEORGE Published: 08.26.08 The Dayton Broncos, due to some inclement rainy weather earlier in the week, wound up hosting Lumberton rather than traveling to the Golden Triangle but the outcome would not have mattered – the Raiders took a whipping. “When we scrimmage, we try to beat you,†said head football coach Jerry Stewart. “If you and I are pitching horseshoes I’m going to try to beat you. Everybody tries to win and don’t let any of them tell you different because that’s a lie. The only time you don’t try to win is when you don’t.†QB Cody Green and A.J. Dugat took turns putting on a clinic for the visitors from Lumberton. On the Broncos’ second offensive series, Green called his own number, took off to his right, cut inside, cut outside and outran defenders for the 61-yard score. Dayton would then score on the next four possessions with Lumberton getting a score on their lone drive of the morning sandwiched in between. The score at the half was 35-7. The Broncos, off substitute quarterback Zach Crowder’s 65-yard pass completion and long run by Payton Ploch iced it for the home team. Meanwhile, although the defense recorded 7 sacks, the Bronco boss was none to thrilled with execution on that side of the ball. “We’re just not very good yet, defensively,†Stewart said. “I’d be the first one to tell you if we were, I think the strength of our team is the offense and our offensive line is doing really good.†One problem with the offense and it showed up quite a bit on Saturday was a series of high snaps, one of which resulted in a turnover. “Right now Jeremy Baker, Caleb Lang and Jake (Clayton) Howard are going to determine which one is going to play center,†Stewart explained. “Jeremy blocks good, but he snaps too high. He tries hard and is a great kid. Caleb snaps good, but he doesn’t seem to know how to make every practice yet, and Jake Howard has been sick so that boy needs to drink some orange juice or something. Our guards are Anthony St. Julian and Aaron Ripkowski and they’ve done a great job. St. Julian will hurt you out there and Aaron is great for just a sophomore. The two tackles are Chance McCormack and Ray Samuels and those kids have done a really good job. So we feel pretty good about our line right now.†The Broncos don’t utilize a tight end, but have some receivers that are game breakers and name takers. “Our receivers have all done well,†said the coach. “Damian Berotte, Terry Asson, Payton Ploch and A.J. Dugat have been great. Then ‘Smoky’ (Darius Detiege) and B.J. Jones are working at tailback, but of course Cody (Green) is pulling the trigger back there.†The coach went on to describe how his featured quarterback, the most fussed at player on the field due to the tremendous responsibilities placed on his big shoulders, handles the adversity of some coach getting into this face. “Cody can take being gotten after by a coach,†said Stewart. “I wish all those kids who’ve recently quit over getting hollered at by some coach could listen and watch. Cody takes on more than anybody. We stay on him all the time because he’s got more responsibility than others, but then, he can take it. Then, like I said, we’ve got A.J. out there and I still believe nobody can touch him. And A.J. is his own worst enemy. Nobody else is going to do it to him. When he wants to, it’s going to get done. So we played them, Cody and A.J. for a half Saturday. The first time we had the ball we didn’t do anything, but from then on, we scored every time we had the ball on that bunch. We were really strumming offensively.†The coach described how Lumberton really didn't offer much of a challenge, but his main gripe against his own defensive squad is that none of them are running down hill. That’s a coaches expression for a defensive player coming in fast and hard on a play and delivering a lick to the opponent’s ball carrier, or anybody on the other team. He likes to hear a pop now and again and those are far and few between. “Run down hill and hit somebody,†said the coach. “Hit something in an opposite colored jersey. We’re not hitting and we’re just not a very good defensive ball club right now.†The coach lamented that right now the thing that is holding the defense together and making them look good to the average fan sitting in the stands is the defensive front. That’s when he relaxed a bit a smiled. “Our defensive front is the best thing we’ve got,†admitted Stewart. “That’s Tony Hill, Xavier Edwards and K.J. Barton. They’ve done the best job so far. Another kid, Darian Wright, a sophomore has come in and backed up at nose and did a real good job. N.L. Hines is one of the defensive linebackers that did a good job. In fact, we might have to pull Darian up from jayvee and put him up here with us. He did a really good job and I’m real pleased with him – great kid, he’s a great kid.†The coach bemoaned about how this team has to get better in the other positions because right now they’re just not very good. “Come to think of it, Evan Brown had a good game playing 8-tech, so five kids on defense had a pretty decent scrimmage,†remembered the coach. “The rest of them, I thought, were average. And then we got a pretty good game by Cameron LaCour over there playing corner. They didn’t attack him much so he got in there and did what he was supposed to do.†Stewart went on to add that Terry Asson was being worked at safety and would only get better and better, but reiterated that this is just not a very good defensive team right now. He also bemoaned the fact that Green (Cody) wasn’t kicking the ball as well as he had been at the beginning that that was very disappointing. He also admitted that possibly he had been over-coached and they probably needed to leave him alone and let him kick. The coach also was disappointed in the consistency on punts and that his kicker just needed to have that job become more important to him. “I tell him he’s going to live to be 112 because he never gets in a hurry,†said Stewart. Feeling good, or not, it gets real this Friday night when an old nemeses, Bay City comes calling. The game is at Dayton with kickoff at 7 p.m. Bay City will run the Tyler John Tyler offense.†“It’s a power game,†explained Stewart. “A toss brings everybody up in the hole and you use your speed to get bounce out and outrun them. Defensively, Bay City returns 8-starters from last year, but that’s why you play those teams – to see what you’ve got.

I think the Ploch kid is gonna have a good year. It looks like he will take some pressure off of A.J., along with a couple others.

Dayton vs Bay City....your thoughts

Excerpt from the Bay City Tribune [Hidden Content] ...The Blackcats’ only scrimmage won’t be until Aug. 22, when they play St. Pius X in Houston. Spring football, an 18-day practice schedule in May, took a week of two-a-day practices and one scrimmage from BC’s fall slate. But first-year head coach Robert Blackmon isn’t concerned. Spring football helped get the new program implemented over nearly four weeks by sacrificing just six days of fall training, Blackmon said. Blackmon is bringing in an entirely new offense with a wing formation, far from the spread Dan Edelman brought in last year. The Blackcats don’t have an abundance of starters returning on offense, but they have lots of athletes who saw lots of time in their positions. The defense will be the real strength of the team, at least at first, with eight starters returning... 8 returning starters on defense, anybody know how their defense was last year? -
Lumberton vs. HF Week 0 Predictions?
bronco1 replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I hear you that is what's got me concerned. I think we will be okay between the tackles, as we have a good group of Linebacker's. I think we are having trouble outside the tackle box, getting outran to the corner. Depth is another concern going up against a 4A school they will no doubt have an advantage in that department. I have said all along that we might not win, however I do not think we will get beat by more than 14 points. I hope I am not eating my words come next Monday. If I am wrong I will be man enough to admit it. From my not so professional observation, that is exactly where they can get you. Quick to the outside and hard to bring down. -
We played Nac the last couple of years in pre-season, this a good showing for Ozen. Any body with as many players as Nacogdoches suits up ought to be good and have plenty of talent. Ozen will get the 2 or 3 spot in the district this year, not based on this scrimmage but, you can't keep that much talent down long.

Lumberton vs. HF Week 0 Predictions?
bronco1 replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
This was my prediction at first, I wold like to change it a little. If H-F has a good D-line and can hold L-towns RB's or at least slow them down they will have a chance. If H-F has a decent secondary they won't have to worry about Lumbertons passing game. If H-F doesn't have a good D-line then that is another story Beard and Hannah will run all over them. They are some big ole boys that don't like to go down. Again if H-F has a stout D-line then they will win by 7, providing their o-line is decent as well. While I appreciate your cautious optimism, I am really concerned because of how we performed in our two scrimmages. I thought we would have a pretty salty defense, from what I heard we are having trouble stopping the run. I thought we would be able to match up pretty good against other teams with Good speed as we have some ourselves. One thing is for sure we will find out Friday Night. Man if ya'll are having trouble with the run then it may be a long night, those 2 Lumberton runningbacks could hurt you. -
