Deer Hunters Urged To Take Precautions Against Fever Ticks [Hidden Content] AUSTIN, Texas — State wildlife officials are urging deer hunters and meat processors in South Texas to take additional precautions when handling deer carcasses during the upcoming season due to concerns about possible spread of fever ticks in the region. Portions of Maverick, Dimmit and Webb counties are currently under livestock quarantine by the Texas Animal Health Commission due to heightened levels of fever ticks outside the permanent quarantine zone along the Rio Grande border. If not contained, according to TAHC officials, the fever ticks will continue to spread northward outside the permanent fever tick quarantine area and could become re-established in other areas of Texas and throughout much of the south, southeast and parts of California. In addition to cattle, horses, white-tailed deer, Nilgai and elk can act as a host for the tick, perpetuating its population. “We’re asking that hunters use common sense and take precautions when handling and transporting deer taken on ranches within the quarantine zone,†said Mike Berger, PhD, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department director of wildlife. According to the TAHC, fever ticks can affect the condition and general well-being, but are unlikely to cause death in deer. It is safe to eat venison from fever tick infected deer. Hunters are reminded that if you kill a deer on property that is NOT known to be infested, then you may process or transport the carcass as usual even though the ranch may be within the quarantine zone. However, if you kill a deer on property known to be infested, then you have three options: Leave the hide on ranch; freeze the hide for 24 hours, or have the hide/cape treated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fever Tick Force before removing it from the ranch. In addition to deer processing and transport restrictive measures, all use of corn treated with the anti-parasitic Ivermectin should cease immediately through March 1. Ivermectin use requires a withholding period of 60 days before slaughter or harvest. “There is too much at stake here to take a chance on inadvertently carrying this deadly parasite outside the quarantine zone and we are asking hunters to be vigilant to help keep this tick from spreading,†Berger stressed. Fever ticks are capable of carrying and transmitting a protozoa—or tiny blood parasite—that destroys red blood cells, causing the deadly livestock disease, "Texas Fever." Cattle are highly susceptible to "Texas Fever," and the disease may kill up to 90 percent of infected cattle. When it comes to WOS and there Class status (3A or 4A) keep in mind that at least 10 or so of their district titles came in 4A classification. WOS is not your average 3A and I think anybody who knows football would agree with that. Any time a team beats WOS they have done something and hopefully after Aug. 31 we can say we have.

I was at the WOS/BH scrimmage last night too. I am sticking with my Dayton by 2 TD's prediction.

I agree dayton good post. Surely the coaches are spliting the time at that position if they know he isn't going to be there week 0 - week 5. In my opinion the coaches aren't wasting their time, they are trying to do what is right.

2 weeks, no way I got one day before I get a football fix, even if they are scrimmages. WOS vs. BH tomorrow in BH at 7:00pm Dayton vs. Angleton next Friday in Dayton.

When was the last time WOS was underestimated or the underdog. A prediction against WOS should never be considered a dis. I would venture to say nobody underestimates the Mustangs. My prediction is based on the fact that our talent level is up and the will to win against a smaller school that beat us last year. I make my prediction with the utmost respect for WOS. Everyone knows WOS is good team, we just hope to be better.

I was there as well and it was pretty hard to watch. There is no doubt that the team WOS played that day was not the team that rolled though 22-4A. Green didn't play, M. Dugat had minimal touches, mostly turnovers turned the tide against us. Conditioning might have been an issue. This year will be different. As far as I know Diamond J isn't a player, just confident in our secondary.

Aug. 10, 2007 New Way To Buy Federal Duck Stamps: The E-Duck Stamp AUSTIN, Texas — Waterfowl hunters in Texas will have the option of purchasing a Federal Duck Stamp electronically this year, as part of a three-year joint effort between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and nine state fish and wildlife agencies, including the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Hunters who buy the Federal Duck Stamp from license retailers this year will be issued the actual stamp at the time of purchase and pay the face value of $15. However, purchases of the Federal Duck Stamp at TPWD locations — game warden offices, state parks and other sites that sell licenses — as well as online and phone transactions, will consist of an electronic authorization and the actual stamp will be mailed separately. These locations will only sell the new electronic Federal Duck Stamp, which costs $17, reflecting additional shipping and handling fees. The “E-Duck Stamp†option is designed to make it more convenient for hunters, birdwatchers, stamp collectors, and others who support conservation of the nation’s wetlands to buy federal migratory bird hunting and conservation stamps, commonly known as the Federal Duck Stamp. To hunt any migratory game bird in Texas, hunters must have a valid Texas hunting license, HIP (Harvest Information Program) certification and a Texas Migratory Game Bird Stamp ($7). Along with this state stamp, they must also have a Federal Duck Stamp ($15 hard copy or $17 electronic) to hunt ducks or geese. I think that post is an insult more towards WOS than anybody. There are far worse things in HS football than losing to WOS (humm, humm 1-9). Everyone knows they bring year after year.

You have to remember it is a government agency. While the Rangers themselves may want to inplement these policies if the higher ups don't see the need there is no money set aside. I know that they are supposed to have activated the hyacinth eradication program already or at least the money has been approved just not sure when they will get it.

There is no reason to think that this year D won't be able to hold them. When you are talking about good athletes, shutting them down is almost impossible. We will be able to slow them down enough to win by 2 td's.

It is gonna be a good game, but Dayton is still gonna win. The memory of last years game will be the fuel they need to win.
