If you want information on strike-outs or on-base percentage you can get clear numbers. What is a hit varies from different book keepers.I would not put to much stock in the averages or number of hits.

On base percentage includes reaching on an error, so it has the same flaw you identified as batting average and most hits.  Plus you have games where guys beat the cover off the ball and have nothing to show for it in hits/avg.

OBP is clearer and less subjective, though...you are either on or you ain't, not much left to interpretation there...over the course of time, things level out and you rarely see a guy who has just reached on error so many times that it makes his OBP look better than it should be...I do agree that many times you see guys hit the ball hard and get nothing to show for it...I always tell them to keep hitting it hard and something good will eventually happen
