Newton and Silsbee would be the most logical favorites on paper. They have the majority of their teams back for this season.

Darkhorse would be NED: If they dont run into a buzzsaw like a Gtown type squad they will have a chance.

You gotta throw sc and Crosby in there. Sc with there qb and two receivers back and that transfer running back. And Crosby with the twins and that tight end coming back. If they find a defense they would be serious contenders in D2.

ahhh how could i forget: for the big school side i'd say La Porte on paper, they have their QB back, 2 RBs that had a good amount of playing time last year and a great defense. the sleeper in 5A IMO would be Deer Park.

Hull-Daisetta will win the 1A state championship because HD is the greatest football program in the history of organized football. There is no program that can stand up to the hard nose brand of HD football. If they do not win the championship they will at least beat Colmesneil.

Nederland still has a chance to win it all this coming up year. I know that they have lost a bunch of key players on defense and the QB. But they are reloading. Good crop of LB's going to have their chance, and most of the O-line and 4 running backs returning. Seay did not play reciever last year, but he is right now. Tall fast target with great hands. Still have Washington and Malveaux on the D-Line. Only team in their way will be the boys from SC.
SC and Ned are two of the areas best heading into next year. That should be one heck of a 4th round game.

I guarantee you this, it will not be the over-rated, under achievers from Silsbee... They are satisfied with 2nd...

I can guarantee this, Silsbee will hang 50 on the hapless HJ football team and Silsbee will continue on in the playoffs, while HJ gears up for another basketball season.

[/quote]even if they are 2nd in district (like last year) they will have a legit shot to get there just like last season, they just made the Regional Final with a young team, mind you they are D1 not D2. If making the Regional Final with a young squad is under achieving i'd take that "under achieving" team any year. Better than not sniffing a chance at the playoffs at all  ;)

Why do you think D2 is so much easier?  To me it's all the same.

Newton is the only legit shot.
Nederland will be local great, but not state great.
SC defense not good enough to win it all.
Silsbee returns a good team, but great teams win state titles!

In my opinion there are a lot more tougher teams in D1 than in D2. At least it was that way last year. I'm not saying that all teams in D2 are push overs. I'm just saying D1 has a lot more powerhouse teams. IMO that is.

Depends on the year.  D1 does have a shorter path to the championship, but you still can run into tough teams on both paths.

DI in Class 3A is the only shorter route and that will end next year when 3A will have 4 teams make playoffs like 5A and 4A.

SC does play pretty good defense in the regular season but the problem the past two years is that defense hasn't shown up in the post season, particularly against offenses that are better than they are used to seeing.
