Dick Vitale
Think of it this way.....What is the first thing that kids do when they walk in a gym? Pick up a ball and SHOOT it, or get down in a defensive stance and do some slides? The GOOD teams have guys that can really score, the GREAT ones have guys on it that will guard you from the time you step off of the bus! ;)

So true. I had a coach that used to say "If the other team can't score, the worst you can do is tie". That coach was my dad and he said it in basketball, football and baseball. A lot of people stress defense in football and baseball but you don't see near enough emphasis put on it in basketball, IMO. Youth coaches will spend a whole practice trying to teach one or two plays when that time would have been better spent running defensive drills. DV, if you don't mind, I may have that quote put on my tombstone. :)
east texas bb
I would say defense out of those 2. Ball-Handling (Passing/Dribbling) would be my 1st. IMO without that you can never get a shot or have a chance to defend a shot.

stevenash
Here is some interesting info from a coach with whom I am pretty close:1) There will never be a shot clock in Texas high school basketball. Schools can hardly find someone to keep the real clock, much less someone to restart a clock every time the ball touches the rim….and thats before you get to the cost of installing them.2) As for offense v. defense I can tell you this from experience. I think "Defense wins championships" is an overrated quote. In my first year as a head coach I couldn't wait to get in there and get our pressure defense put in. We spent so much time learning to trap, rotate, sprint, etc. And guess what….we were pretty dang good defensively. We were not giving up many points at all….we got to district and started out 0-2 and it was because we couldn't score. From that point on we spent the athletic period every day doing individual shooting drills. Each player was getting up 300-400 shots in competitive game type situations. We ended up winning the district and advancing two rounds in the playoffs. We started winning because we could score. I'm not saying defense isn't important but, defense can be successful with great effort. Offense cannot be great without skill and execution both of which take longer to develop. Any coach will tell you that their defense comes along faster than their offense. Being able to defend is great but, you dang sure better be able to put the ball in the bucket. Here's my take on "Defense Wins Championships"……I've never seen a championship game end 2-0. You gotta be able to score in this game.

Texas is always last in changes, but will eventually come around and catch up. I'm sure at one time there were coaches saying that Texas would never allow their kids to play organized basketball beyond the summer months. ;)
