Octfeb
We are 59 days away from the start of the Texas High School Football Season and today is... Barbies Hill Eaglettes Day AKA....... World UFO DayToday is World UFO Day! People have been reporting UFO sightings since the beginning of recorded history. UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) became a major topic in pop culture after World War II, around the same time that the United States and Russia began experimenting with rocketry. Over the years, there have been a number of governmental investigations into UFO reports, but none of them has resulted in any significant evidence. The possibility of life beyond our planet is thrilling to imagine, so it’s no surprise that aliens have become a common subject in our modern-day books and films. To celebrate World UFO Day, invite friends and family over to watch a science fiction movie! Choose a classic film like Star Wars, Signs, E.T., Contact, or Independence Day. If science fiction movies aren't your thing, dream up some intergalactic crafts or baking projects to make today, like a UFO-shaped cake. Happy World UFO Day! World Population DayToday is World Population Day! There are billions of people who live on this planet, but the growth of the Earth’s population has caused many social and environmental problems. Poverty and hunger are two of the key issues. The UN established World Population Day to raise public awareness about the challenges we face. The goal is to get people around the world to help those who are negatively affected by population growth. It’s hard for one person to bring about a solution that will influence the entire world, but if every individual tries to make a difference in his or her local community, worldwide change is attainable. SIMPLICITY DAY Duane Elgin's 1981 book, Voluntary Simplicity was a powerful catalyst for increasing awareness about the need for individuals and society to find sustainable ways to live. The book has been revised and is even more relevant today.Voluntary simplicity is a not a new concept. In fact it speaks to ancient wisdom that our societies seem to have lost in modern times. Choosing to live a life of simplicity is not about choosing to live in poverty; it is about living in balance. Based on three key elements - ecological awareness, frugal consumption and personal growth, voluntary simplicity is helping people change their lives and collectively helping to create a better world.July 12, the birthdate of Henry David Thoreau, is the perfect opportunity to help raise awareness in your community about the benefits of simplicity. Bastille Day is a national holiday in France, celebrated annually on July 14. It is quite similar to the Independence Day festivities in the United States. The Bastille was a stronghold built in Paris in the 14th century. In fact, the word “bastille†means “fortress†in French. Yellow Pig DayYou're probably wondering, "What the heck is Yellow Pig Day?" This unique celebration dates back to the 1960s when two math students at Princeton were given an assignment to analyze the properties of the number 17. Thinking about the number 17 for so long drove them a bit nuts, (as you can imagine), so they came up with the idea of a mythical yellow pig. The yellow pig had seventeen toes, seventeen teeth, seventeen eyelashes, etc.Today, mathematicians in colleges and universities all across the country celebrate Yellow Pig Day by eating Yellow Pig Cake and singing Yellow Pig Carols (seriously, we couldn't make this stuff up). And of course, the festivities always take place on the 17th day of July. :o

National Caviar DayToday is National Caviar Day! Caviar is processed, salted fish roe (otherwise known as fish eggs). The eggs are tiny, round, and usually black in color, but there are also orange and red varieties. Although it may seem like a slightly odd thing to eat, caviar was once reserved strictly for royalty. Today, it is still considered a delicacy all over the world. Many people use the term “caviar†to describe any kind of fish egg, but true caviar must come from sturgeon—a group of about 25 species of fish. Some examples of sturgeon are beluga, osetra, and sevruga. These particular fish produce some of the finest varieties of caviar in the world.
