HDBobcats9 Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Daisetta, TX - 1995- Final Week of the regular seasonThe leadup: HD is 3-1 in district going into the final game against the East Chambers Bucs. EC comes in 3-1 as well. HD lost their one district game to West Sabine 14-13, failing on a two point coversion attempt after a last minute touchdown. EC lost handily to Hemphill for their one loss. Scenario: Hull-Daisetta wins and they are 4-1 and outright district champions due to a 7-0 win over Hemphill (8-1). East Chambers wins and they finish 4-1 in district and get outright second place to Hemphill who beat EC 38-7 three weeks earlier. HD loses and they are out of the playoffs. EC loses and they are out of the playoffs. Game: The game starts out rough for HD. Grades came out that day and they lost 7 players to academics. EC takes quick advantage of this. Jeff Ward has a couple big gains. Buc QB Hank Hargraves is running the offense flawlessly using talented weapons TJ White, Jessie Evans and Jason Thomas. HD QB Kory Brett is doing what he can with limited weapons and starters out on the offensive line. HD FB Chris Simmons breaks a 90 yard TD run in the first half, only to be matched by big plays from the Bucs. Halftime comes with a score of 22-22. The third quarter brings plenty of excitement, all by East Chambers. EC scores twice and goes on top 36-22. HD RB John Slack is knocked out of the game on a huge hit. HD backup QB Jason Sullivan steps in at tailback splitting time with freshman Dominique Williams. (1st varsity game). The intensity is rising as the game has tons of big hits and spectacular plays. HD gets the ball back with around 5min to go and sets off on a big drive. QB Kory Brett hits TE Brandon Broom on a deep post from around 27 yards out and he runs through both safeties for the touchdown! XP is good so the score is 36-29 EC with around 2:50 to play. HD kicker Mike Ruddick lays down a perfect one hop on-side attempt.... Hargraves is hit simultaneously by Broom and Kevin Dodd... the ball is free...and HD's Chris Simmons comes up with it! The Bobcats are back in business with 2 and change to go. Brett to WR Jason Simeon for a nice gain. A mistake by Brett as he floats an out route pass...tipped by a Buc defender, and hauled in by QB/RB/WR Slash Sullivan. He gets out of bounds with around 45 seconds to go. Brett drops back, he's pressured, scrambles to his right and hits TE Broom on a drag route at the pylon from 18 yards out!! The crowd goes wild!! East Chambers leads 36-35 with 38 seconds to go. Head Coach Russell Roberts checks the stats. No overtime back then. Goes to a tie breaker if ends in tie. 1st tie breaker: Penetrations; Tied up at 7 each. 2nd tie breaker: 1st Downs; tied up at 24 each. Final tie breaker: Total Yards; East Chambers 356 Hull-Daisetta 341. Tie breaker would go to EC and they are in the playoffs. Gotta go for two. In the sideline huddle, Coach Roberts decides to go to 400 give. Off tackle behind right side of Fontenot and Broom. Been working all night. Need 3 more yards now. Snap is clean, Bobcats fire off the ball, blowing EC defenders into the endzone... Brett goes to make give to FB Simmons... bad exchange.... fumble.... Brett scoops it up, struggles forward and is stopped on the 1 yard line. East Chambers is going nuts!! The Bucs hold!!! On-side attempt recovered by EC, take a knee and that's the ball game. One for the ages and a heartbreaker for Hull-Daisetta. Hemphill goes to the playoffs as district champs beating Garrison in Round 1 before falling to Groveton in the Area Round. Hemphill finishes 9-3 with losses to Alto (15-1) state finalist, Groveton (9-2 only two losses were to Alto in reg season and playoffs) and Hull-Daisetta. East Chambers goes as 2nd place team and loses in 1st round 40-2 to state finalist Alto. Hull-Daisetta stays at home with two 1 point district losses to West Sabine and East Chambers. This would be the beginning of an era for East Chambers football marking their first playoff appearance since 1982. EC would dominate the local 2A district for the next 15+ years.
Just an old Coach Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 I was a sophomore on that EC team, and that was one of the funnest games I ever played in. That did change the shape of EC football for the next 15+ years. I played DE that game, and must say Broom was a man.

HDBobcats9 Posted July 13, 2013 Author Report Posted July 13, 2013 My brother just called and said he found a bunch of our old game tapes in my grandma's garage. He named off a few including HD vs. EC '95. I told him to keep that one and I'll take the rest lol
