Lumberton's Clay Buchholz may be the pride of the farm system, but he didn't make the manager of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats happy.

When Buchholz got a standing ovation from the fans in New Hampshire after his outing Monday -- 6 1/3 innings of four-hit ball with 11 strikeouts in Portland's 5-4 win -- Fisher Cats manager Bill Masse wasn't pleased, even though quite a few fans were likely there simply to see Buchholz pitch (some of them Sea Dogs fans, since Portland isn't that far from Manchester).

"I think it's sad," Masse told the Union Leader. "We're not playing the Boston Red Sox. We're playing the Portland Sea Dogs. Unless you're from that area, you root for your hometown team. This is New Hampshire's team, Manchester's team, and to see Clay Buchholz get a standing ovation was absolutely disgraceful."

The Fisher Cats are the Double A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Centerfielder Collin DeLome continued to power the ValleyCats offense going 2-3, extending his hitting streak to seven games. DeLome has now recorded multiple hits in six of the past seven games, raising his batting average to .429 on the season and .545 at "The Joe" this season. Matt Cusik knocked a double to left in the seventh inning driving in Chris Frye, putting the Tigers out of reach for good.

Jay Bruce ( Bmt Westbrook 2005) was promoted to AAA Louisville "Bats"  today.  He arrived in time to start in right field and bat 6th in the line up.  He had the first hit of his AAA career in the bottom of the 6th inning ( solo Home Run ) and threw a runner out at the plate with a lazer from right field in the 7th.  Game and video footage is on Milb.com

1st time I seen Jay was when he was 15 or 16 when we took our Babe Ruth team to Beaumont for a warm up game before we left for a tournment. That swing he had was as sweet as you could ask for. By the way, one of our pitchers was Bucholz.

Rick Sweet's career as a manager launched the same time Ken Griffey Jr. made his minor league debut.

Sweet managed Griffey at the Seattle Mariners' Single-A affiliate in Bellingham, Wash. Griffey was fresh out of high school in 1987 and didn't turn 18 until after Bellingham completed its season.

Pawtucket, RI) - Sunday's matinee at McCoy Stadium was really a tale of 2 very different games. For five innings, Clay Buchholz (pictured above) dazzled the 9,530 fans in Pawtucket, while baffling Louisville hitters. The 22 year old right hander struck out 10, while allowing 2 runs on 3 hits. Buchholz was masterful, mixing up his pitches and throwing all of them for strikes. In 2 appearances with Pawtucket, spanning 8 innings, the young Texan has 14 strikeouts. Buchholz (0-1) took the loss. The Bats erupted for 6 runs in the sixth inning off Barry Hertzler as 11 men came to the plate. For good measure, Louisville scored three more in the eighth. Kevin Cash and Alex Prieto had 2 hits each and Zach Borowiak knocked in his first run since joining the club. The series winds up on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. David Pauley (6-3) faces Victor Santos (NR)

Bruce, Votto carry the Bats

Jay Bruce drove in three runs and Joey Votto added two RBIs as visiting Louisville routed Pawtucket, 11-1, on Sunday.

Bruce, who went 2-for-5, ripped an RBI single in the six-run sixth inning and added a two-run single in the three-run eighth. Votto, who was 3-for-3 with a walk and scored twice, lifted a sacrifice fly in the third and ripped an RBI double in the eighth.

Chris Dickerson added three hits, scored three times and drove in a run and Ryan Hanigan went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to round out the attack for the Bats (50-50), who snapped a five-game losing streak.

Starter Elizardo Ramirez (2-2) allowed one run on five hits and one walk, while fanning three over 6 2/3 innings.

Highly touted Red Sox prospect Clay Buchholz (0-1) took the loss in his second start for Pawtucket. The 22-year-old left-hander yielded two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out 10 over five innings. The 6-foot-3 righty went 7-2 with a 1.77 ERA in 16 games with Portland before being promoted in early July.

Reliever Barry Hertzler was roughed up in his only inning, surrendering six runs on six hits and two walks.

DeLome starts fast

Outfielder Collin DeLome, the Astros' fifth-round pick in June's draft out of Lamar University, is off to a nice start at the plate for short-season Tri-City. He was hitting .321 with two homers, seven doubles, four triples and 15 RBIs through 28 games.

Jay Bruce : 2007 Major Leaguer?

The 12th overall pick of the June 2005 draft out of West Brook high school, Jay Bruce has torn through the minors this season and has a legitimate chance at playing in the Reds outfield before the season is out.

After just 67 games in High A this season, Bruce was aggressively promoted to AA Charlotte of the Southern League by the Reds organization. It was reasonable to expect Bruce to spend the rest of the season in AA and make a jump to AAA for the start of the 2008 season. Jay however, had other plans. In only 16 games, Bruce smacked out 12 extra base hits, 15 RBI and a .405 average. This prompted the Reds to send Bruce up yet again, allowing him to accomplish the somewhat rare feat of playing in three highest minor league levels in the same season. In 13 games in AAA Louisville, Bruce has a .644 slugging percentage, and 7 extra base hits. For the year he’s hitting a combined .319/.379/.604 between all three levels, with 35 doubles, 8 triples and 19 home runs in just over 400 plate appearances.

Despite his size (6’2, 218), Jay has the ability to play all three outfield positions. The main area on concern, as with most young hitters, is his strikeout to walk ratio, which is currently sitting at 100 K vs 33 BB. This is something that will most likely work itself out as he matures, and is somewhat reasonable when considering the rare combination of average and power that Bruce posses at such a young age.

If Bruce (born on April 3rd, 1987) does in-fact make his major league debut this season, he will be by far the youngest player for the 2007 NL season. That honor is currently held by fellow Reds prospect, Homer Bailey, who is close to a year older than Bruce.

To really put this in perspective, Delmon Young made his highly publicized debut in the majors at 20 years, 11 months and 15 days of age. If Bruce debuts in the majors as late as the start of the 2008 season, he will be exactly 21 years of age. Young’s minor league total line is .317/.363/.517. for an .880 OPS. Bruce’s minor league line is .297/.361/.543 for .904 OPS.

NEDERLAND, TX – With the summer winding down and the start of fall ball right around the corner, Head Coach Nathan Blackwood and his staff have been actively filling the Chaps’ roster for the 2008 season, and this past week, their recruiting class added a notable name with the addition of Brock Lemire, the 2007 American Baseball Coaches Association NJCAA Division III Baseball Player of the Year.

A native of Nederland, Texas and graduate of Nederland High School, the 5’11†203 pound third-baseman has spent the last two seasons at Tyler Junior College, where he and the Apaches enjoyed a season of firsts in 2007.

Buchholz strong in Pawsox 10 inning loss

Clay Buchholz had few nits to pick about his fourth Triple-A start for the Pawtucket Red Sox.

In 6 1/3 innings against one of the International League’s premier teams, the Buffalo Bisons, the slim right-hander allowed two runs on five hits - replete with zero walks and nine strikeouts (Buchholz now has 30 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings with the PawSox).

But the Bisons scored an unearned run in the 10th and edged Pawtucket, 3-2, on Wednesday night.

“A big part of my development right now is staying ahead in the count and being able to throw off-speed pitches for strikes … even not for strikes and getting some swings and misses out of them,†said Buchholz, who threw 67 of 94 pitches for strikes. “Overall, tonight, I’d call it a successful outing. But you’re here to win. When you don’t win, it’s on the border of not being a successful outing.
