Little Changes to Second NJCAA D-III Baseball Poll; Tyler Still No. 1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 11, 2007) - Tyler Junior College (Texas) stays on top of the NJCAA Division III Baseball Poll released today capturing all eight first place votes and 80 total poll points - the highest amount of votes a team can receive. Joliet Junior College (Ill.) and Ridgewater College (Minn.) remain at No. 2 and No. 3.

The Apaches of Tyler Junior College boast a 28-9 record and recently took two of three games from defending national champion and Region 5 foe Eastfield College (Texas). Tyler lost the first contest on April 6 by a score of 6-5, but then took both games of a doubleheader on one day later by scores of 11-0 and 13-9. The Apache batting lineup features four batters with batting average over .400: Billy Danaho (.436, 52 runs scored), Brock Lemire (.426, 44 RBI, 8 HR), Jordan Rutenbar (.417 - ranks 7th in NJCAA D-III) and Clint Stroud (.415, 61 hits, 18 doubles).

Joliet Junior College improved to 21-9 overall after taking three games of a four game set against rival Harper College (Ill.) on April 6 and 7. After falling in the first contest 6-1, Joliet bounced back to defeat Harper 5-4, 15-13 and 12-7 in the final three games. Leading the Wolves offensively is Ed Koncel with a .379 batting average and 22 RBI.

Ridgewater College (Minn.) has been unable to improve on their 11-1 record due to inclement weather in their region. The last time they were able to take the field was on March 27 when the won both contests of a doubleheader against Augsburg College (12-1, 8-4).

ya, lemire is having a GREAT year.  i talked to him the other day, and he said they are ranked 1 in the nation, and gave me his stats...like he's playin a video game in real life, haha, crazy good numbers, keep it up man.

i will say, little disappointed not to see any love for me up there on that list of local college players, but its all cool, not many people knew where i went to. so mr. landry, add me to that list, that way maybe there is someone out there that might be slightly interested in checkin up on me, haha (not looking for sympathy or nothin, im just jokin)

Lemire Key Cog For TJC At The Plate

Brock Lemire has been a rock at third base since signing with Tyler Junior College two years ago.

The former Nederland standout hit the ground running in his TJC debut with a four-hit, five-RBI doubleheader to open the 2006 season.

And Lemire, part of a strong sophomore class, has done nothing but get better while helping turn second-ranked TJC (36-11) into a Division III power.

The 5-11, 203-pounder leads the Apaches in seven offensive categories - batting average (.428), slugging (.717), on-base percentage (.505), RBIs (51), doubles (20), home runs (eight) and total bases (109) - this season.

"He's really matured as a hitter," said TJC head coach Jon Groth. "Last year he would go up and down more, and this year he has been much more consistent."

Lemire played well enough as a freshman - hitting .323 with 27 RBIs - to be named first-team all-conference. He also played in the Texas-New Mexico Juco Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game last fall (teammate Kevin Els was also selected, but an injury kept him from playing).

The momentum continued for Lemire, who signed with Division I McNeese State University in December.

"It's a great thing for a D-III guy to be able to sign early," Groth said. "Not many of those things happen. We used to have a fair number of those kids when we were Division I, but now that we're D-III normally our guys sign in the spring."

Lemire jumped at McNeese's 50 percent scholarship offer. It made too much sense. Located in Lake Charles, La., the college is only an hour from his hometown.

Furthermore, McNeese head coach Chris Facklerwas Lemire's hitting instructor in high school and also coached his summer team in 2005.

In high school at Class 4A Nederland, Lemire was overshadowed - and lightly recruited - on a team that sent several players to NCAA Division I programs.

Still, Lemire was the district MVP his senior year on a team that was ranked No. 2 in the state before losing in the third round of the playoffs.

At TJC, Lemire's biggest hurdle was adjusting to the grind of playing a longer schedule.

"In high school you play 30 games maybe - and that's two games a week - but in college you've got 50-something games and it's very strenuous," said Lemire, who has learned to pace himself.

After Lemire started this season slowly, former teammate Dustin Hood, who plays shortstop for Wake Forest, reinforced that the season is a marathon and not a sprint.

In other words, don't get too high or too low.

"Some guys get a little too intense and they can't get themselves out of the low spots, and Brock's been able to," Groth said.

Lemire did just that after committing three costly errors in a 6-5 series-opening loss to Eastfield in early April. He quickly put that nightmare behind him by going 6-for-8 with two home runs and eight RBIs the next two games as TJC won the series.

"That was really big for me," Lemire said. "I felt like I had to have a good series for my team to have trust in me."

TJC-Richland Series

This weekend at Mike Carter Field, the top two teams in Division III will meet for the Metro Athletic Conference championship.

The three-game series begins at 2 p.m. Friday.

However, the Apaches (29-4 MAC) learned Wednesday they will have to sweep No. 1 Richland (36-12, 30-3) to win the regular-season title and earn the top seed for the District C Tournament.

Richland gained an extra win this week when Brookhaven had to forfeit all of its conference victories.

Even if TJC takes two of three in the series to tie Richland, the Thunderducks own the tiebreaker based on winning all six games against third-place Eastfield. The Apaches went 5-1 against Eastfield.
