eagleswoodville#1 Posted August 17, 2013 Report Posted August 17, 2013 Highly recruited Newton running back, Kevin Shorter, has committed to play football for the University of Texas next year, via his Twitter account. per The Bleacher Report
Guest Air Bisquit Posted August 17, 2013 Report Posted August 17, 2013 Great pickup for UT and congrats to Shorter
ChampionEagles Posted August 17, 2013 Report Posted August 17, 2013 I'm glad the kid finally made a choice. And appears to be a good one. UT recruited him to be an athlete and I think he will be a great pickup at corner for them.

I don't quite see him at safety myself, but more to a corner. But I'm sure they have discussed all of this with him. Just congratulations to Kevin and on to playing his senior year for the purple and white.
ECFAN#1 Posted August 17, 2013 Report Posted August 17, 2013 Congrats Kevin. Wish you the best at UT !!!!!
NewtonNation Posted August 17, 2013 Report Posted August 17, 2013 Congrats Shorter! You have a bright future ahead.
AshlyHasBeen Posted August 17, 2013 Report Posted August 17, 2013 UT's last push looks like it paid off. When we taped our preview a couple weeks ago he was wearing an A&M undershirt and told me that's where he was going. Congrats to Shorter, wish him the best.

mfd814 Posted August 18, 2013 Report Posted August 18, 2013 Congrats from Hardin fans , awesome young man.
Back2swag Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 Larry Porter , Texas Running back coach was recruiting him to play RB .. that told him he would be a big part of the offense in the future .
purpleeagle Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 Kevin was featured on High School Spotlight last night. Two people were featured, a hugh lineman who is committed to Ohio State and Kevin.
ChampionEagles Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 Just read the same about Kevin being recruited exclusively as a running back. He has the skills including being able to catch the ball out of the backfield. Good luck to Kevin and Hook 'em!

I thought they were recruiting him as a safety. Good luck to him.
Back2swag Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 I really think he is best running back in the state , all divisions .. He shines on far less carries only question is the completion he is facing, plus starts on defense and has played both ways on varsity since his freshman year so it's clear he can stay healthy, only injury was a high ankle sprain soph year missed 3GmsYear. He's not far behind the career totals too and has only played two varsity seasons. I hope he does well but backs from the smaller classifications have struggled on the 40 acres. I remember Traylon Shead from Cayuga rushing for about 10,000 yards in high school and he had the THSF all-time TD record when he left. I don't think he ever got a carry at UT and is now at SMU. He was already over 200lbs in high school and benching 400 but I think the football stats came from competition more than anything else. According to UT's website Shorter is coming in as an ''athlete'' so maybe they have plans to try him at a couple different positions?

Level of competition between 2A and 5A is vast and jumping from 2A to FBS will be a whole new world. Although the running backs coach(at Texas) did present him as a running back and what he could do for them out of the backfield, we'll have to wait and see where and how well he plays. I wish him well.
tjcfan08 Posted August 20, 2013 Report Posted August 20, 2013 Congrats Darrell....Outstanding young man right here....Wishing you and those Newton Eagles a great Senior year.....
