PhatMack19 Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 Argentina escaped with a goal in the 118 minute of extra time to win 1-0. USA vs Belgium up next. Quote
bullets13 Posted July 4, 2014 Author Report Posted July 4, 2014 I was fine with our performance in this tourney. Truth be told, we don't have a player good enough to start for any of the top 7-8 teams in the world, with the exception of Howard, and there are probably at least that many teams in the tourney that have a full team of substitutes that are collectively more talented than our starting 11. That being said, Altidore being hurt greatly affected our ability to attack, not because he's a world class striker, but he's definitely world class in his ability to win balls and hold play up so that our team can move up the field. We simply don't have the technical ability to work the ball up the field against better teams, and Dempsey isn't fast enough to send long through balls to. Despite this, and despite the quality of our group, we still advanced to the knockout round, and came within a missed chance by wondolowski of beating a European team with a ridiculously talented lineup and advancing to the quarters. Lukaku came in for Belgium in the 91st minute and scored in extra time. To put that into perspective, if he was on the US team he would hands down be our best player, and would likely be projected to eventually overtake Donovan as the best US player ever. So even though we played a very defensive game that was not exciting to watch, the US did very well. I am also really looking forward to the future. We have an extremely young, talented backline that should be set for the next two world cups, and several young players in our system that will be competing for midfield and striker positions. We will only get better. Quote
