I have never heard the fact that Britian went through a depression at the same time and came out of it much quicker than the USA!  Assuming that is true, then why and how would that have happened?

By the USA propping up the free market system with social programs.

If my memory is correct, two things come to mind.  Large tax increases and the Smoot Hawley Act.
