AggiesAreWe Posted July 19, 2014 Report Posted July 19, 2014 Definitely Newton! 4 title appearances 3 state titles 380-107-2 in the last 40 seasons. 9.5 wins a season average! only 3 losing seasons! While in comparison WO-S "only" has 2 state titles, they do have 4 state final appearances and a higher winning percentage than Newton. WO-S only has 1 losing season in it's 37 year history. (3-7 in 1983) WO-S all time record: 340-88-3 winning percentage of 79% skipper 1 Quote

Newton having titles spread out from the 70's, 90's and 2000's is better when looking at a 40 year span. IMO I do think WOS is a close 2nd though! Quote
NewtonNation Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 If this was a thread about best program in the 80's no question WOS rules! Quote

AggiesAreWe Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 Although they finished 8-2 both times, they missed the playoffs while in the local 4a district. Would that be considered a losing season or not? Definition of losing season= having more losses than wins. Now one can debate if it's considered a successful season or not. That is still arbitrary. NewtonNation Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 Hands down Groveton. 8 or 9 state apearances 3 or 4 state Titles, 6 appearances 3 titles 353 wins 9 losing seasons. Pretty dang good! Quote

That is still arbitrary. Ok. I see, that's why I said that. So with that logic, a team that finish under .500 and go on to make the playoffs AND makes noise... In a sense, would that mot be considered a 'winning aeason'? Ok, maybe I'm overthinking this big time... Bighornet 1 Quote

badndn Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 Lamarque then Katy then WOS. If were talkin just the GT and lakes area parts of SETX, WOS then Newton. If not for one of the most powerful football programs in the history of Texas football in Lamarque during the 90's and 00's, WOS could have several more title appearances. MAYFIELD Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 I think all been great that was makes Texas High School Football as great as it is. We might not be as flashy as other states schools, but we bring it when we square off against them. Quote

'93 lost to them and they win state*. We probably would have made the state game if we won. '95, same scenario. They win state. '97 we lose to them and they win state. As a matter of fact, you could arguably say that if we were D1 that year we win it all. We gave the D1 champs, Texas City, their only loss of the season. Finally got them in 2000 in the quarters. probably one of the best games WOS has ever played. *pretty sure it was '93 Quote

skipmeister Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 If WOS made the playoffs back in '99, we would have beaten Lamarque in the third round and eventually would face PNG in the regional quarterfinals! The Mustangs would win that game, too! Instead of those Indians playing Stephenville in the State Finals, it would have been us and we would eventually upset them! Quote
