The Enabling Act of March 1933 had given Hitler enormous power over all Germans in Nazi Germany. It is no coincidence that in the same month the first concentration camp was created at Dachau. Anyone considered to be a threat to Hitler was arrested and issued with a ‘D notice’. The law was ‘adjusted’ to allow the Nazis to effectively determine who was an opponent. Once labelled as such, arrest was inevitable. The development and expansion of various police units – both in uniform and un-uniformed – gave the internal security forces a massive level of power.

I think this might hurt his chances at running for President.

First off, I don't think Rick Perry has much of a chance at getting the nomination regardless of what happens with this.

That said, exactly how this affects his chances for the presidency really has yet to be determined. The DA he wanted gone was completely wasted when she was pulled over. I realize this is from a very conservative site, but here are GIFs from police cameras of her arrest:

I don't really blame Perry for wanting her gone under these circumstances. You have to wonder how fair it is for a DA who's been caught driving under the influence while in office to be entrusted with prosecuting people for, among other things, driving under the influence. The question the courts are going to have to answer is whether he used appropriate means to push her out.

I personally don't think he did, but from a political standpoint as opposed to a legal one, that isn't really what matters. The message is what matters. Perry could take this and tell the world that he's being unfairly targeted by Democrats for trying to be a responsible leader. That may not play well with the moderates out there, but it would definitely appeal to his base. Like it or not, playing the victim is an effective political strategy under the right circumstances.

If my understanding of the situation is correct, he wanted the DA gone, and when she wouldn't resign he denied funding to a program she was involved in? If that's the case, then it sounds like the indictment is warranted. On the flip side, if Obama denied a legit program funding because he had a beef with a republican involved with the program, there would be outrage, and someone would soon post a westernjournalism article all about how crooked it was.

I don't think this can help Perry, but I also don't think it is going to help anyone else. Regardless of what the true motivation might be, it is going to look like sour grapes.

And no one can dislike Perry more than me. He is a hypocrite of the highest order (for reasons I can't and won't discuss here). But I am not a fan of this indictment.

This is the same bunch that indicted Tom Delay. Delay was later acquitted of all charges. This sounds like a second political witch hunt! Thoughts?

I don't want to get too much into it, but I will say this: there's a whole lot more to the Tom Delay story he's lucky the public doesn't know.

From the article: "Usually when prosecutors want to use the criminal statutes to cripple a political opponent, they come up with at least some claims of personal or political venality. In this case the D.A.'s office is trying to criminalize the normal process of constitutional government."  This is looking more and more like it strictly politically motivated.  The actual 2 page indictment is in the article,,,

It's really going to be interesting to see how this plays out.  My gut feeling is that Slick will not only come out unscathed but will end up being portrayed and seen as the victim while giving him a platform to push the "I stand for what is right" diatribe thus propelling his popularity with voters.  I am not a Perry fan but I do believe that this indictment was politically driven and done so by the same hounds that exposed Palin and Christie and under the circumstances may end up backfiring!
