PhatMack19 Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 At the other end of the spectrum, Beaumont, Texas, ranks as the least educated city in America, with one of the lowest percentages of bachelor’s degree holders as well as graduate or professional degree holders, and one of the lowest numbers of doctors per capita. http://www.forbes.com/sites/kathryndill/2014/09/16/the-most-and-least-educated-cities-in-america/?utm_campaign=forbesfbsf&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social Quote

tvc184 Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 Beaumont ranks dead last in the USA or as the poll states, they are number one in the least educated. So Beaumont can rightfully say..... "We're #1 !!!"....."We're #1 !!!"....."We're #1 !!!"....."We're #1 !!!"....."We're #1 !!!"..... Quote

NorthoftheBorder Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 How would BISD factor into this statistic? Quote
PhatMack19 Posted September 17, 2014 Author Report Posted September 17, 2014 One of the criteria is % of bachelor degrees. I would assume we have a lot higher % of technical degrees in this area with all of the refineries. Most plants don't require a degree or only a 2 year associates so that would skew the numbers some. Bigdog Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 That is true. If you look at the areas with a high amount of industrial jobs, there are a lower amount of 4 year degrees. Doesn't mean they don't make pretty good money though. Quote

CraigS Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 The Cities Where A Paycheck Stretches The Furthest "In first place is Houston, where the average annual wage in 2011 was $59,838, eighth highest in the nation. What puts Houston at the top of the list is the region’s relatively low cost of living, which includes such things as consumer prices and services, utilities and transportation costs and, most importantly, housing prices: " http://www.forbes.com/sites/joelkotkin/2012/07/09/the-cities-where-a-paycheck-stretches-the-farthest/ Also by FORBES: Whereas being educated is very important. I'm not convinced basing how "educated" a region is by way of bachelor degrees is the best way, or maybe it is, just a terrible misleading headline. Anyway - I think this statistic may serve better for our area. This is obviously Houston, however, we are almost identical to this model. Big girl 1 Quote

tvc184 Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 This area is heavily industrial where people can make close to six figure salaries without a four year degree. A lot of it is simply supply and demand. Mr. Buddy Garrity and Big girl 2 Quote
