It is a result of legal proceedings. Essentially, Texas will end up laying about $6 million in total per year. Now, anyone who knows Texas athletics, knows this is simply an emptying of a single pocket to Texas's financial system.

You think it's a recruiting tactic?

No

A recruiting tactic would be a helicopter.

Coach Strong won't need recruiting tactics. He will find good football players that want to be a Texas Longhorn. And he can promise them a great job after they earn their degree.

Read the article.
"First"?
Texas AD making an informed decision to budget money to address the ruling.
Media turns it in to : Texas is first to pay players......
Lolz

Because what are they technically doing? Paying the players. Giving them $5,000 of free money to do whatever they want with and $5,000 to pay for the rest of their educational expenses. It's not exactly paying them a salary, but it is paying the players for the use of their likeness.

Steve Patterson was asked what it would cost? He gave an "estimate" IF they university, along with all other NCAA DI universities, were to pay players.

$5K for Cost of Living

$5K to use their name/image

Not going to happen any time soon. Legally, that is.

A couple of takes from the article.
- I don't see how most universities will be able to afford to pay the athletes. Maybe the football team but all of the other non revenue sports will kill the athletic budgets of smaller schools. This will be the end of college sports as we know it.
- If Texas starts charging to tailgate, it will make an already weak Gameday environment way worse.

I didn't make that up. There are many articles that back up that statement. Try Google.com

Been to more venues than most. I prefer to experience it myself rather than read about it. ;) But I'm sure google is good for you

I've never been to any college stadium that charges to tailgate.

I thought you had to pay to have a spot to tailgate?

I know Lamar charges to reserve a spot. Pretty sure A&M charges for parking spots for tailgating
