eagleswoodville#1
The University of Texas at Austin, according to multiple reports, will become the first university in the NCAA to pay it's student-athletes. They will be paid a $10,000 stipend each year. This covers all sports, male and female.

fox
read the whole story. it has to do with the law suit that was filed which is being appealed. http://www.burntorangenation.com/2014/10/22/7041617/texas-longhorn-steve-patterson-paying-players-obannon-ruling
PN-G bamatex
Regardless of the underlying impetus, this, in conjunction with A&M's poor season and last week's loss in particular, will do a lot for recruiting at Texas.
eagleswoodville#1
It is a result of legal proceedings. Essentially, Texas will end up laying about $6 million in total per year. Now, anyone who knows Texas athletics, knows this is simply an emptying of a single pocket to Texas's financial system.

whatnamecanipick
You think it's a recruiting tactic? No A recruiting tactic would be a helicopter. Coach Strong won't need recruiting tactics. He will find good football players that want to be a Texas Longhorn. And he can promise them a great job after they earn their degree. Baba Ganoush
To be fair to sec, it does say STUDENT-athlete. Sec kids use "student" loosely. That label would probably result in a reduction of pay for them

Giving them $5,000 of free money to do whatever they want with and $5,000 to pay for the rest of their educational expenses. It's not exactly paying them a salary, but it is paying the players for the use of their likeness.

He gave an "estimate" IF they university, along with all other NCAA DI universities, were to pay players. $5K for Cost of Living $5K to use their name/image Not going to happen any time soon. Legally, that is.

Maybe the football team but all of the other non revenue sports will kill the athletic budgets of smaller schools. This will be the end of college sports as we know it. - If Texas starts charging to tailgate, it will make an already weak Gameday environment way worse. I know Lamar charges to reserve a spot. Pretty sure A&M charges for parking spots for tailgating
