IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys’ success has helped benefit the players and coaches. And now it extends to owner and general manager Jerry Jones -- and not in a business sense. 

Jones was named the NFL Executive of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America on Thursday, the first time he has been so honored by the group. 

The Cowboys finished 12-4 and won their first playoff game since 2009 this season. The moves made in the offseason helped direct them to an NFC East title. It started with the decisions to say goodbye to long-time players DeMarcus Wareand Miles Austin, in salary-cap moves. 

The Cowboys passed on a big-money offer to Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jason Hatcher and brought in low-cost free agents like Jeremy Mincey, Henry Melton and Terrell McClain. Jones was able to talk Rolando McClain out of retirement and worked a trade with the Baltimore Ravens, giving up what turned out to be a 2015 sixth rounder for the linebacker as well as the Ravens’ seventh rounder. 

The Cowboys added players like C.J. Spillman and Jack Crawford after the final cuts that made significant contributions. 

But the best move Jones made might have been the one he initially regretted the most. With the 16th overall pick in the first round the Cowboys took guard Zack Martin even though Jones had an infatuation with quarterback Johnny Manziel. 

Martin started every game, was named to the Pro Bowl and became the first Cowboys’ rookie since 1969 to be named All-Pro. Martin became the third first-round pick the Cowboys used on an offensive lineman since 2011, joining Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick.

All started when he (they) focused on the O Line in the top part of the draft a few years back. Culminated in the emphasis in the running game this year. They will re-sign Bryant. Cant find a better or even suitable young replacement out there. Murray on the other hand will have to test the market and unfortunately he'll find the market sux for RBs. Randall averaged 6.7 ypc. If Jerry lets Murray go and signs or drafts a RB for far less, I'll say he's learned his lesson. If he re-signs him for a bloated deal then back to Jethro.

Dez is more important.  any decent running back can put up pretty good numbers in that offense, plus probably not fumble 62 times during the season.  there's only a couple of guys in the league who can do what dez does.

OK. Who was the difference this year? They finally give him the ball, he wins rush title and Dallas wins in playoffs. Compare to recent past


The difference was the play of the o-line, And them finally committing to the run in general. i would rather replace him with a capable back who might not be quite as good, but will still perform pretty well behind the O-line than try to replace matchup nightmare Dez and his 16 TD catches. And that's not even factoring in the success of the other WRs who benefited from single coverage or holes in zones because opponents had to concentrate so hard on slowing him down. Factor in all of the fumbles by Murray, along with how interchangeable backs have started to become in the NFL, and dez is a no-brainer.

I'd argue that he's a fool if he pays what Murrays gonna ask. Unless he gets him at a considerable discount JJ would be a fool to sign him. Thats the old Jerra. New JJ lets Ware go instead of hamstringing the team with a silly contract. New JJ lets Murray go for same reason.
Gabe go check the stats on Randall. It's an O Line thing and a Linahan thing. And to answer the question, "Who made the difference this year?" Zach Martin. He solidified that line from right side to left side.

And the worst move this offseason is the lose of Callahan with that O Line, but its one JJ could do very little about.

Dez is a must. finances make it hard to keep both. I wouldn't be surprised to see AP a cowboy. With that said I am not sure too many other Rbs will be as big a difference maker as Murray has been this year even behind that line. The line was the key but Murrays vision and one cut running style make him stand out. The contribution Murray made this year took loads of pressure off Romo and his play showed it. AP would be a good replacement but other than that I hope something is worked out with Murray.
