Did anyone have a good deer season?

Recommended Posts

Im on a lease out in kirbyville and all that i seen this year was 2 doe, a spike, and a little 6 point, and that is about it...i actually seen more ducks landing in my flooded road to my stand than i did deer! where have they all gone?  ???

And im also on a lease out in Ozona which is 8 hours west of here, and the first 4 or 5 hunts i didnt see a deer, i prolly seen about 20 deer of the 9 days i was up there. i seen one nice 8 point but i couldnt get a shot on him...this is the first year in the last 5 that i havent shot a deer!...im kinda sad bout it.

How was yalls season?

I had a fun year but it could have been better. Just before the season, my work schedule was changed and I lost about half of my days to hunt.

I also got to make that trip down to south Texas to watch it snow and sleet and drive in the mud. Believe or not, it was a pretty good time and gives me something to look forward to in the future.

I had a decent season.....  I killed an inferior buck for the first time since 1998...  I was not too happy about that, but I will do better next year.....  A lot of hunters would have shot him but he was not what I was looking for....  Just got caught up in the heat of the moment!

yea i understand that, but my year was slow, i meen real slow...possibly the worse year i have ever seen.

Our lease in kirbyville there is like 38 guns i think and only 3 does where shot in the first 2 weeks of the season....usually we have like 17 does and about 12 bucks within the first week.

We have 11 members in our lease between Chester and Colmesneil and I think we got 15 does the first 10 days. Get the herd thinned early to save the food for the rest of them.

We have 11 members also - I think we got 26 does, 15 management bucks, and 3 trophies.

Hey Dave I have a lease in Ozona too. I had a very good season. Saw deer every time I went to the stand. Our deer were very active but we hunted pretty hard this year. I got a decent 8 point. Saw a monster 8 or 10 but he was about 250 yards off and trotting straight away from me in and out of the brush so I didn't get a great look. Hopefully I'll get him next year.

Out in Menard we had plenty of deer this year but the horns where no near what we have had in the past. Most of me and my family just cleaned up the heard by taking by genetic racks and old spikes. Lots of 10 points about 17 inches wide got to dodge the bullet this year, but shame on them next year.

That is they way to manage it though.. and kill lots and lots of does.

Yeah we have all decided from now on to take just 1 good buck a year and everyone start killing a scrub to weed out the bad genetics. Hopefully in about 4 years we will have all the poor quality racks weeded out.

It has been proven, that with good management, the Hill Country can produce 130 class deer with in 3 years. It looks like ya'll are on the right track, the key is buck to doe ratio. You have to take some of those does, (usually alot) to get better bucks.

Your right and I think you can have 130 class deer in any area in 3 years. If you get them plenty of good food, kill a bunch of does (has a lot to do with the food supply) and let them grow up, it is amazing what kind of deer are produced.
