Looking at other political assassinations of that time period, I think that he was aware of his own fate yet it did not deter him. Some think it may have been prophetic when in his last speech (the day before he was killed) he stated, "I may not get there with you" and followed it up with "I'm not fearing any man!". 

 

His idea of civil disobedience was the correct way to protest and he and others of his ilk fought for civil rights in the courts and in the court of public opinion. 

 

I have read a few of his speeches and sermons from a book a few years ago and there is a lot more there than the often recited I Have A Dream speech. In one such sermon he stated, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."  

 

Such perception could be used today.
