If thing keep going like they are then Orangefield will play Tarkington in the first round and if they win West Columbia in the 2nd and then if Cleveland wins out we will play them in the regional quaterfinals. This is only if we win.

WOS will play Liberty and if they win will play Navasota in the second round. Now if they beat Navasota then they could play Silsbee (if Silsbee wins and I think they will) in the regional quaterfinals.

lumberton will play the 3rd place team from 18-4A...proably caney creek...lumberton beat them in the second round last year....like 50-39 i think...not sure tho

Not yet.  Looks like Orangefield will play Tarkington.  I would think the site and date will be determined at the latest by Friday of this week.  All playoff info for all teams will be posted here as soon as it is available.

I think they mean what kind of talent they have, players ect. I don't have a clue what kind of talent they have but they are in the playoffs so you better not overlook them. Nobody can be overlooked from here on out.

This article was interesting to me because of the free throws made/attempted. Cleveland made only 17 of 41, and Coldspring made 11 of 26. I couldn't believe Cleveland got 41free throw attempts!

Lady Trojans win two at Willis tournament

After playing five games in three days against three schools in a higher classification, the Coldspring Lady Trojans came away from the Willis basketball tournament with a pair of victories.

In the tourney opener Dec. 28, the Lady Trojans did not have an answer for the high-octane Class 5A Clear Lake ballclub falling, 98-37.

Audrisa Harrison was the Lady Trojans top scorer with 12 points followed by Brittany Washington with seven.

Later that same day Coach Doug Keeney's ballclub found the winner's circle with a 58-50 win over Travis. After a 10-10 first quarter tie, the Lady Trojans moved ahead with a 29-23 halftime lead. The Coldspring girls outscored Travis 29-27 in the second half to sew up the victory.

Chelsey King paced the win for Coldspring with 15 points while Washington helped out with 14.

In Game 3, Class 5A Atascocita slipped past the Lady Trojans, 45-36. Sequoia Holmes and Harrison led the Coldspring offense.

The Lady Trojans rebounded in their fourth game, defeating fellow district foe, Splendora by a score of 41-38. Washington was the Lady Trojans leading point producer with 19 while King helped with eight points.

Facing their third larger school in the meet, the Lady Trojans bowed out with a 42-35 loss to Class 4A Texas City. The Lady Stingarees built a 17-2 first quarter cushion and kept the pressure on throughout. Shemeika Brown was top scorer for Coldspring with 19 while Breyona Harrison added 5.

Afterward Keeney addressed the team's performance against the aggressive and, in most instances, larger competition.

"I'm glad we had the opportunity to participate in this tournament," said the Coldspring coach. "I feel that the players learned a lot and will play better against schools in our district as a result."

The Coldspring girls will travel to Liberty Friday for a District 22-3A meeting and return to their gym Jan. 16 to host Shepherd.

Lady Panthers struggle in big loss to Cleveland, 64-31 - Liberty looking to playoffs after one more contest

Liberty's Lady Panthers jumped out to a 10-8 lead after the first period of play last Friday night at home, but the inability to get past single digits in following frames, did them in, 64-31 at the hands of the Lady Indians from Cleveland.

"We got some sloppy play out of some young players and that's going to happen at times," said head basketball coach Greg Box. "We were short a player and that of course affected our depth, but these girls can play better than they did tonight, and they're aware of that."

Heather Godinich was off in San Antonio showing chickens, and was not available for last Friday night's game.

Box, whose team is 12-10 on the season and 6-3 in district, would never use the fact he has a young team as any kind of excuse and said so, but he was able to point out a couple of "youth factors" that might have made a difference with a more seasoned team.

"We had a sophomore out of position some of the time," said Box, "but playing behind her, we have a freshman. Now, both of them are going to be good for us but they're still young, eager, and learning right now."

Liberty scored first in the contest at the 7:19 mark when Michelle Braxton hit a field goal. Braxton scored again after blocking a shot, taking control of the ball and hitting on a 14-foot jumper. At the six-minute mark of the first period, the Lady Panthers were on top of the Lady Indians, 4-0 and things looked pretty much in control, but Cleveland had other plans.

At the 5:23 mark of the first frame, Cleveland's Jessica Perry sank a three-pointer to close the gap, 4-3. An ensuing turnover was followed by an attempted shot by Lady Indian Tiesha Scott, which drew a whistle and a foul. Scott sank the front end, but missed the back end of the two free throws and at the 3:58 mark, the game was all tied up, 4-4.

Cleveland got into the fouling act when Latiesha Rone bumped Sherry Nelson. Nelson hit only the back end of her free throws and Liberty was up by one, 5-4. That's when Cleveland seemed to take control.

Rone sank a two-pointer to put the Lady Indians up, 6-5. Then, following a rebound at one end of the court, Shakendra Davis made a lay-up to make the score 8-5, Indians. That's when the flurry started to end the first period of play.

First, Liberty's Nelson hit a 10-foot jumper to close the gap, 8-7. On their next possession it was Nelson again, but she missed, Alicia Mallet followed up with an offensive rebound and a basket to give Liberty back the lead, 9-8. Nelson intercepted a Cleveland pass and returned it for a lay-up but was fouled. She hit the front end of her free throw attempts as the period ended and Liberty led, 10-8.

From then on, it was all Cleveland as they would score 18 points in each of the next two frames and close out the contest with a 20-point fourth period. Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers could only score six, nine, and six points in the final frames, resulting in the 33-point blowout.

"We started out playing a bit sloppy, but we finally came around and played well," said head coach Rennie Chaney of the Lady Indians. "The best thing about tonight's win is that we clinched the district title."

For the Lady Indians, Tiesha Scott led with 16 points, Latiesha Rone had 12, while Jessica Perry added 11.

The top scorer for Liberty was Michelle Braxton with 13, the only player in double digits.

"Coach Chaney's team did a good job on Sherry Nelson and Alicia Mallet because they've been averaging 13 and 15 points respectively, and they were held to single digits tonight," said Box.

Liberty will close out the regular season at home against Splendora, a team they defeated on the road, while Cleveland will play host to Shepherd

One interesting note: In an article about the Cleveland Lady Indians, their coach made a remark about the weakness of the district.

In wins over Splendora and Tarkington, the Lady Indians had a rather easy time claiming victory, but Chaney is not getting over zealous with playoff fever.

"We have been playing fairly decent in the last couple of games," said the Lady Indians coach. "Hopefully, we will continue to improve while preparing ourselves for the playoffs."

"Our district is not as strong as it has been in the past and that has me concerned," Chaney said. "As a result, we are doing some extra things in our practices trying to get ready for the rugged playoff road."

Silsbee tried and tried to get a warm-up game - but no one wanted to play them or they already had a game scheduled or they wanted to play when Silsbee couldn't.  No warm-up game yet.  Scouting is also an issue because the coaches want to be able to scout the teams they are going to be playing next week on Monday and Tuesday.

Barbers Hill will take on the winner between third place in 23-4A and the runner-up of 24-4A. 23-4A appears to be Santa Fe who has lost 3 in a row. 24-4A appears to be Terry whose only losses in district were to 27-5 Lamar Consolidated and only by 4 points each time.
