@ABC: Pres. Obama to prohibit gov't from providing some military-style equipment to local police: http://abcn.ws/1HpTKti http://twitter.com/ABC/status/600305132237103105/photo/1

That the federal gov is involved in local police affairs at all is bad.

They aren't really involved. The Federal government has hundreds or thousands of storerooms with equipment just sitting there. There is probably still equipment stored from as far back as the Korean War.

For many years the federal government has had a program to allow local and county governments to use this equipment. What it does is say the local tax payers money. The taxpayers have all ready paid for all of this equipment from federal taxes. Allowing local governments to use the already purchased and stored equipment just save the locals money. None of the equipment is anything that cannot be purchased over-the-counter.

The federal government is not involved in the local policing when the equipment is given. It just allows the saving of money to use stuff that is already bought and paid for instead of buying new stuff.

This is just a move by the president to pander to his core constituents. He has almost no control over a local law-enforcement whether they accept the equipment or not. This is just a move to make it look like he is stepping in and doing something when in truth it is almost meaningless.

TVC, does the federal gov decide which departments can and cannot receive this equipment or is it you want it you can get it?

The feds decide. Several local agencies have lots of this federal equipment. I know that we have things such as gasoline trucks where we can store several thousand gallons of gasoline for emergencies like during hurricanes. I think that the helicopters that the Jefferson County sheriffs department flies where once military equipment.

What is available and the quantity is not unlimited. The federal government decides what is surplus or what they no longer will likely need and rather then destroy it or keep paying to store it, they offer it to the local police agencies. They set the rules on what can be had, by whom and in what amounts.

One more...do the feds have any say in what equipment a local police department can purchase with their own budget?

Definitely agree with this. It makes total sense to let items that the tax payers have already payed for through federal taxes waste away in storage, and then let tax payers buy those same items for law enforcement through local taxes.*

*the previous statement is sarcastic.

Thanks...so basically this will keep equipment in a warehouse that taxpayers have already paid for. If the local PD decides they need this same type equipment, rather than have this surplus equipment available they have to purchase it themselves.

Great idea!

Yes.

It was not manufactured for locals, has already been paid for and is now collecting dust in a warehouse. My department has an armored vehicle that was purchased by our city. It was built on order and not government surplus at a cost to local taxpayers of (I think) $250,000.

It has been used several times to rescue people or peacefully end armed incidents. It is not a tank as is often claimed in the news. It would have saved the taxpayers a quarter million dollars had we been able to get the same think from surplus. The point is that we can still purchase the same equipment but will have to pay for something again that is equal to something sitting storage that will likely never be used or not until another president comes in and lifts the ban on certain completely legal to own items.

a list of the things Calcasieu Parish is trying to apply for from the government through this program...

One CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives) detection kit, and 27 bulletproof vests.

Glad that we're trying to put a stop to police receiving all of these unnecessary items.

They need those vests in Abbeville.

    • What news station do you watch?…..never mind.    What age are the children you take care of. Refugees from where? Are they in a hospital? Now children compared to criminals…..geeeez. The mayor of Denver and a few governors, including Newsom, have said they will not turn over incarcerated criminals to ICE. This is a felony. They are harboring criminals and fugitives. Gee, I’m so glad you want criminals protected. Anyone who crossed illegally into our country is a criminal. Happy Holidays to you and yours.
    • Sorry sir on my miss count. I was in hurry
    • Are they offering refuge to criminals? Or is it a Trump talking point? Refugees are people who leave their country due to unwarranted prosecution. I actually take care of 2 refugee kids who have complex medical needs   No, refugees are not criminals, and the assumption that they are more likely to be criminals than the general population is incorrect:                                                                                          Research shows immigrants commit crimes at lower rates Immigrants in the United States commit crimes at lower rates than the U.S.-born population, including unauthorized immigrants. This is true across immigrant groups.                  Immigration doesn't raise crime rates Immigrants don't raise crime rates in the communities where they settle. In fact, some studies suggest that immigration can lower crime rates, especially violent crime.                  Anti-immigration politicians have spread a myth Anti-immigration politicians have repeatedly tried to link immigrants to crime, but research shows this is a myth.                  Refugees don't cause crime in Turkey A study found that refugees don't have a causal effect on crime rates in Turkey. In fact, the study found that refugees may have a negative effect on crime rates per capita.
    • I think it's actually the first time ever to get past the second round. Some older folks might try to tell you about Scott High but I wasn't here when that school was around 😆
