There is no reason Jasper shouldn't be able to beat on any given year, up or down in talent, the following teams from their district:

Orangefield

Hamshire-Fannett

Hardin-Jefferson

Bridge City

So, who's left:  WOS, Kirbyville, Silsbee

Jasper has good enough talent year in and year out to beat at least one of those three teams left to make the playoffs.  Tell me where I'm wrong.

Farrar an asst. will have a good shot at getting the job.

From what I hear, that's the popular choice among the kids there that have played for him. The Dogs have had a pattern of getting guys that see the program as a stepping stone for something bigger and better. There were a bunch of coaches that applied for the job when Coach Brooks left, so I hope some good coaches will put their names in the proverbial hat. Sadly, it may never be the last stop that Coach Walkoviak might have envisioned when he took that job back in '77, but I would hope that someone could re-fortify the program and stick around for a while.

To that end, you have to admire what Coach Hooks and Coach Barbay have done at WO-S and Newton, respectively, and what Coach Alvarez has done in his time at Kirbyville. On a side note, I got to know Coach Alvarez during my last year in Jasper when he was working on Coach Walkoviak's staff. He's a GREAT guy and I'm happy that he's found success with the Wildcats, even though he's throttled the 'Dogs a time or two lately.

That's interesting.  I didn't know Alvarez had coached at Jasper.  Maybe that's who they should go and get.  If he wins at Kirbyville, just think how he'd really win at Jasper with better athletes!

There's talent at every school around. The difference is in establishing a program and using the talent that's available to it's best end. Coach Barbay has for many years not had the best talent pool to draw from, but has fielded teams with talent where it could best be utilized. Talent comes in many levels and a program to improve each individuals talent level is what is important. Then meshing these many levels into one team is the trick. Coach Alverez also coached under Barbay as have many. Barbay for President!!! Go Eagles!!
