We are 89 days away from the start of the Texas High School Football Season..... And TODAY IS......

May 29th is Put A Pillow on Your Fridge Day, which is celebrated in Europe & USA and supposedly brings good luck and wealth to the household.

It is unclear as to where this tradition originated from. However it is known that before the 1930’s, cloth was put in larders to bring prosperity and good luck to the household.

The first refrigerator to see widespread use was the General Electric “Monitor-Top” refrigerator which was introduced in 1927. Since then fridges have replaced larders worldwide, causing the old tradition to be unheard of.

However, the national tradition of putting cloth into larders didn’t die with the larder. Since then, the old tradition has gradually developed over the years, and is now celebrated by placing a pillow on, or inside the refrigerator.

Flip a Coin Day

Date When Celebrated : Always June 1st

Flip a Coin Day is day when making decisions is as easy as flipping a coin. This tradition dates back to Julius Caesar. Caesar would take a coin and flip it to make decisions where the right choice was unclear. The correct answer was "heads", which of course carried his image on the coin.

Do you have any idea how to celebrate this day? You guessed it...Flip a coin.  Use this method of decision making for all decisions, and for everything you do today.

National Onion Rings Day

National Onion Rings Day is an informal food holiday celebrating onion rings. The little-known, little-publicized holiday falls on June 22.1 It is not an official holiday recognized by governments or sponsored by a well-known organization or corporation.

Onion rings are a snack food, fast food, side dish or appetizer made from circles of sliced onion or onion paste, coated in a batter or breading, and fried.2 They are most well known in Western countries and a few Asian countries, where they are often served as part of fast food meals and sometimes restaurant meals.

It is not known who originally created onion rings or when. It is known that in 1933 a recipe for onion rings appeared in a Crisco shortening advertisement in ‘’The New York Times’’.3

There are many variations in how onion rings are made. They can be made using solid rings of cut onion, while others are made using an onion paste. There is also a great deal of variety in the types of batter used and the seasoning added to it. Recipe variations also exist where the onions are baked or grilled rather than fried. Options such as these can often reduce the fat content of the onion rings, while changes in the batter or breading can still enhance the crispness. 45

National Onion Rings Day History

Little is known about where National Onion Rings Day came from or who appointed it. It is possible that the idea was created to fill gaps in food holiday calendars, daily food blogs, or food magazine articles. There may be an origin relating to a manufacturer or retailer of onion rings or a constituent ingredient, but this has not been documented online.

National Onion Rings Day is only celebrated by those who appreciate this food and enjoy celebrating food holidays, generally in the United States and other Western countries. In some cases there may be promotions or special offers from manufacturers, retailers, or restaurants who wish to capitalize on them.

International Fairy Day

It’s International Fairy Day! Today is a day for fairy believers young and old to celebrate the stories, magic, and history of the Fair Folk. For centuries, fairies have been an important part of Celtic culture. In all of the ancient legends, these mythological creatures are described as intelligent, mischievous, and magical. They have the ability to fly and cast spells, and they live in “Tír na nóg,” the land of eternal youth. Some say that humans don’t often see fairies because of the division between the two worlds, but sightings can occur at twilight or during Beltane, Mid-Summer’s Eve, or All Hallow’s Eve.

In his 1904 play Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie wrote that when the first baby laughed, the laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and that was the beginning of fairies. International Fairy Day is the perfect opportunity to relive your childhood fantasies and celebrate the joy and magic of the fairy world. Read a classic fairy tale, build a fairy house, or take a stroll through the woods. You never know when you might stumble across something magical!
