Lady Pirates reach playoffs

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

EVADALE — For the first time since the 2001-02 season, the Deweyville Lady Pirates are on to the basketball playoffs.

It took a punch in the face and a tenacious defense to get there Monday night in a one-game play-in against East Chambers.

Deweyville slipped past East Chambers 32-29 Monday at Evadale High School behind Krista Goleman’s 10 points and three steals.

Senior Tera Gibson, who was punched in the face in the first period, had a solid outing with nine points, 11 rebounds and four steals while Theresa Brown put in nine points. Amanda Vincent pulled down 11 boards of her own in the victory.

“I am extremely proud of this group of girls,†Deweyville coach Kristi Henderson said. “I have never had a group of girls in any sport work as hard.â€

The Lady Pirates (14-13, 8-5) will find out their bi-district opponent Tuesday night when the playoff teams from District 23-2A are decided. There is currently a four-way tie in the district.

Deweyville jumped out to a 9-5 lead after the first period Monday and then took a 18-10 advantage into half-time.

East Chambers then climbed right back into the game by outscoring Deweyville 11-5 in the third to make it 23-21 heading into the decisive fourth period.

In the fourth, the Lady Pirates scored nine and held the Lady Bucs to just eight points to secure the playoff spot.

Henderson’s squad once again proved defense is key in basketball.

“Defense more than anything is what he worked on all year,†Henderson said. “That is the very first thing we talked about in the very first practice. Using a tough defense was the only way we would match up each game during the season. If we played a tenacious defense, we would win ballgames.â€

East Chambers was led by Armentor and Richard who each had five points.

The Lady Bucs’ player, who was upset with Gibson’s positioning on an in-bounds play, was ejected for the intentional punch.

Gibson was not out long and returned to action.

“This district was physically tough,†Henderson said. “We played a pretty brutal non-district schedule and it paid off.â€

BucBacker says:

The actions of one player should not reflect on the team as a whole so I guess that the actions of the girl receiving the punch shouldn't reflect on D-ville as a whole, either.  By the way, I have video showing that she was not an "innocent victim" in  the altercation.  After the whistle blew, following the foul on the rebound, I was still recording and captured the vicious elbow thrown by the "innocent victim" (AFTER THE WHISTLE WAS BLOWN) so it could not have been an accident. After that, the DV girl turns, says something to the EC girl and the rest you know.  This is a classic example of why you should never retaliate.  The second one is usually the only one that pays the price for their actions.

ECBucFan says:

I try my very best to NOT criticize officials. Anyone familiar with my posts knows that is very true. However, this is one instance where the officiating was the root cause of the problems. I know players (both sides) will be intense, and the officials are there to controll it. They didn't here. They let it set in and fester by allowing (as I said earlier) "anything goes" on one side, and touch fouls on the other. I am just sorry they didn't let the teams decide this game.

I also say "ashame" on Gabriel Pruett of the Orange Leader, and whoever else thinks this was a one sided event. I also noticed Pruett failed to mention the blatently BIASED officiating.

Mr. Pruett, were you even at the game?  The altercation was not on an inbounds play but yes the EC player was upset with Gibson's positioning.......a vicious elbow to the chest is quite upsetting in my book.  (I was later informed, that was not the only elbow she threw against our player.) I just want to set the record straight for those of you who are praising the play of the DV player involved.  I'm not saying that the EC player was right in her actions, far from it, but in this case "it took two to tango".  I believe, Mr. Pruett, that you should put away your "rose colored glasses" and get your facts straight, the next time you write an article that is supposed to be informative.  As ECBucFan has stated, it would never have happened if the referees had kept the game under control with even calls.

With that said, good luck Lady Pirates in representing our district in the playoffs.

I think you guys are being too hard on Mr. Pruett. He didn't have the benefit of a video replay to see what happened. All he could officially go by was what the ref called. He's there to report results, not give his own opinions. And we all think the officiating is "biased" when it doesn't go our way. I am the world's worst in that category. It could very well be true that the officials allowed Deweyville more contact. That type of unbalance happens all the time. It is also true that the officials sometimes let the games get out of hand. It's not fair to direct your anger at someone who was not part of the problem.  Hey Gabe, Orange County still loves you!  :-*

Hey Gabe, Great job covering high school sports. Somebody is always looking to blame someone else for there actions. Just like some people think there kids are perfect. I've been around high school sports for over 30 years and we all know that is not so. Gabe, Keep up the good work. Not many people want to cover it but you do and I am thankfull for that.

Im usually not one to take up for myself in these situations BUT I was not even at this game. I had to stay at the paper since I was the only one working Monday night in the sports department. Someone had to design the pages and get them out on deadline and the trip to Evadale would have cut it just a lil too close, as much as I really did hate not being there. I apologized to coach Henderson repeatedly for it. I wrote that piece on what Coach Henderson called in and I am very thankful for her doing so as she has done all year. Thanks to those who said the kind words. We look forward to printing more wins in our paper of the Dville girls.

I will say this, the Orange leader does a much better job than the Beaumont Enterprise when it comes to covering high school basketball. Yes I know Orange county is smaller. But I would be willing to bet that the Beaumont Enterprise has more people. The Orange leader has two people that cover Orange County. 6 schools in all. The Beaumont Enterprise does a good job in football but a poor job in basketball. I do subcribe to both but the Orange Leader is my favorite. I only get the Beaumont Enterprise because they print the lottery numbers each day. If the Orange Leader would do that I would cancel the Beaumont Enterprise. The  Enterprise only covers Ozen, West Brook or Central, what about Lumberton, Silbee, Hamphire Fannett and other schools in the surrounding area. I know you can't cover each game, but get with coaches and ask them to call in a game. I heard some do but you will not print it. I think it is because you are lazy!!!!!
