TIPPING HAT TO LAMAR

Recommended Posts

Agreed... I dont think She has a clue to what the post means....... I think that Lamar is one of the REAL offers he could make a positive impact at. Recruiters are looking for tools.. Size, Height, speed, vertical, shuttle, etc. If a kid has all the tools, they feel they can train him to be a player.. As in the Tony Brown case. He has all the tools to be a stud. He just needs the coaching and experience to turn into a Beast. Thats the prime reason you see the CAMP kids that get offers from nowhere. Because tool wise, they have them. In High School. HEART. can get you on the All State team. But in college it will not. You might see a legit 4.5 guy in High school 5 or 6 times a year. Linebackers run 4.5 in college. Its a sped up version, and only the athletes with the tools have the capability of succeeding. Now dont get me wrong, there might be a few that get by, but the majority is a certain TYPE of Athlete. And it is definately dog eat dog.. At the lower levels, you will see the athletes with less of a tool level recruited. I see Lamar as a program that has the capability to compete in the conference. I have watched a few of their games and I think a kid Like AM can succeed at that level with more experience and coaching. As I stated before, I would never knock a kid for getting a education.  And honestly I have not seen any post on this subject that is knocking him. Sometimes keeping it real hurts peoples feelings. But Im pretty sure thats all part of this thing that we call LIFE. As I stated before, I think if AM has a good senior season, he can establish himself as a top 10 QB in PN-G history..... But at the end of the day you cannot teach, size, speed, etc..... I think LAMAR is a perfect fit..............

That's a good post. A prime example of what you're talking about is my little cub that will officially be a Cougar next Monday. He plays receiver but he can't catch and he's not as good a football player as his athleticism dictates. The kid that plays on the inside of him has some of the best hand I've ever seen for a young player though. The difference is that when they're juniors one will be 5-8/170 and one will be 6-2/215. They take the kid with more size, speed and upside every time simply because you have less of a possibility for a bust. If he can't help you do what you recruited him for then there's 5 other spots he's versatile enough to hopefully try to contribute at. The smaller, less athletic kid is going to be position specific meaning if he can't do what you recruited him to, he's probably a wasted scholarship so guys are more leery to offer.

A prime example is Devwah Whaley and Demarcus Smith. Smith has much better rb skills than Whaley but Whaley is bigger and less of a risk at the FBS level which is why he has 20+ offers and Smith didn't get any FBS offers. Example #2 is Darrian Wright and Deshawn Washington. Whenever I saw them play they were equally effective but Washington was bigger so he got the high ranking and the A&M offer while Wright signed with SMU. At the end of this season Wright will have about 30 career start and 4 letters if he stays healthy while Washington hasn't sniffed the field and isn't in the post-Spring two deep.

The big kids that can run fast and jump high always get the love, no matter if they can actually play or not.

Not sure if that's a good example.  Washington went to a team in arguably the most physical conference underweight...they RS'ed him for him to add weight with the intention of moving him to NT.  It was reported that added weight affected his quickness (his best attribute) which is why he wasn't a factor in the spring.  Interestingly enough, he tweeted today that he has lost 13 lbs of body fat (not necessarily weight) this offseason so we'll see if he has regained that quickness enough to make an impact...regardless he wasn't expected to make an impact as a true freshman and it's way too soo to judge him.

You make a good point and I've read all the same things. At the risk of not sounding negative I'll just say this.

If quickness was his biggest asset then why couldn't he slide out to end? If weight was a problem then why wasn't he quick enough? At the time he was bigger than Zaycoven Henderson who pushed past him as a true freshman last year. Now he's about to be pushed further down the depth chart by Dylan Mack. I could go on but I think you see what I'm saying. Mack excluded, Washington is the highest rated interior lineman A&M has had in a while so . . .

The original post was meant to show that recruiters will take a flyer on the bigger and perceived better athlete over the one who may actually produce. I think Wright would've seen a lot more playing time by now.

Washington's game is built off quickness as in his first step off the ball to create penetration...not necessarily quickness as in speed to come around the end.  He should have been used as a 3-Tech but they tried to move him to Nose meaning he would need to gain weight.  247 listed Washington as 6'3" 277 in HS vs Henderson being listed at 6'1" 280 so Henderson was already built a little more like a nose.  Then factor in that Henderson was also an EE so he went through spring with the team...that's a big head start for him.

But I completely agree that if you "look the part" you'll get more of a shot.

Now back on topic of Lamar lol

Just read that Lamar is Kendrick King's only offer. They definitely are getting better as far as scoping out local talent at schools of all sizes now. You'll never get every athlete in an area because some want to get out of the area. But for some, Beaumont is the bigger city (if you're coming from Newton, Kirbyville, Jasper as some examples).

Great job by the Lamar staff
