Baylor situation

Recommended Posts

The rest of your statement I know nothing about. If you say there are cases that aren't tried in that area, swept under the rug, and you live there then maybe you need to get out there and do something about it. I mean you can vote for judges, the DA, sheriffs, and all....

Your final comment I quoted, what do you want Baylor athletics to do? You want them to comment on their players legal situations so you get your news sooner? Pretty sure that is illegal and they will be slammed with violating privacy laws. Not to mention the judge put a gag order on this case which is the main reason very little was heard about this until the conviction happened the other day.

Just as some one said earlier, they could be more transparent and not just say violation of team rules. Even if there was a gag order, Baylor could have at least said he was suspended pending criminal investigation. That is legal. Baylor is known (basketball) to be very secretive. As for privacy laws they are also known to break those. The fact of the matter was this was a blatant cover-up by multiple parties if it was never posted anywhere. Most newspaper publish felony indictments, yet this one was not. There should be more transparency.

As for the first part of the response, you obviously have never lived in the country where everybody knows and are related to everybody. It is impossible to do something when A. Everyone in a position of power could face criminal investigations or be fired if certain cases are prosecuted (sheriff's department, school board members, leaders of the community) and B. the county where the rapes take place is in the devil's triangle of media and for that reason no one gives two-cents what happens there. So your statement about do something is impossible there.

I grew up in Liberty. It is unfortunate nothing can be done as it may have led to a better resolution to this problem. 6 months jail and 10 years probation is too light in my opinion for rape. Luckily, I have never had to sit on one of those juries so I don't know what all goes into the sentencing part of that.

Liberty is still close enough to where if something major happens at the school then it would be covered by the news. This incident in particular that I know of, the nearest news station is 90 miles away and the school so small it is not even on a map. 4 rapes in two years (2 at the school and 2 at a function hosted by the school board's vice-president with multiple school employees working and multiple deputies providing security) and nothing is done and will never be done. The whole county knows what happens but nobody cares because of risk. That is how it is in Central Texas. I would love to do something and have tried, but am unable to because no one cares about these small schools.

I am not trying to ramble, and apologize if I am. I agree that it is way to light of a sentence. I do not think that anyone in their right mind would think that the punishment is just. The judge will probably be investigated to see how his background with Baylor may have clouded his judgment.

Baylor is in a whole lot of trouble because he was indicted, yet was still allow to be in classes with women and the fact that they punished the girl by forcing her out. Let's not forget about the victim and the possible other victims who were not rightfully warned. Baylor should be held accountable.

My only opinion is still that being from the area, it is something just for the case to even go to trial. So many people have so much to lose that they will do whatever they can to be keep things quiet. It is wrong, but it is how it is in Waco and Central Texas.

remember the Abilene Cooper High player that was committed to Baylor but kicked off until the playoffs in 2013 for a charge of sexual assault on a little girl? I remember it being somewhat kept quiet too, until he was reinstated.

You lived up there. You know what I'm saying. Good Ole Boy politics. Not about what's right, but what's best.

Forgot about the Cooper incident. But what about the Brownfield basketball player? Led the team to the regional finals.

Give the kid a break.  Victim of an aggy education.  Maybe if he'd have gone to the 18th most difficult school in the state, he'd have learned that legibility does not apply to the spoken word...

I believe those were supposedly quotes from Charlie's spoken word.  Most of it made sense which is why I questioned it's legitimacy.

Some thoughts from an old guy:

I've been a fan of Art Briles since I saw his Stephenville team beat PNG in the Astrodome. I read his biography and admired him as a coach and a person. This certainly clouds that admiration, though, I haven't heard Briles side of the story. I do have mixed feelings here...

Football is a violent sport played by violent men. Some can turn it on when on the field, and turn it off when not. I think of examples  like Howie Long and Michael Strahan. Others may not be able to turn it off. While their barbaric actions work well on a football field,  they are criminal in a civilized society.

Then there is the money thing. It is phenomenal how much a small, private Baptist college in Waco Texas has changed over the last decade. The campus is much improved and McLane Stadium is out of this world! Baylor is a serious contender for a National Championship this year!

Have Art Briles and others sold their integrity to build this? How can Baylor, TCU, Boise State or anyone not in a powerhouse program recruit or compete with the powerhouse programs ? As fans that funnel money into this; are we partly to blame?

Rape and sexual assault are vicious crimes and cannot be tolerated. A hard line must be drawn here, and I think for the most part, it has been. It gets fuzzy when we start getting close to that line. For Art Briles and others to succeed,  they have to take players who are top program talent, yet aren't in top programs.

I guess I have more questions than answers. I love football,  especially on Fridays and Saturdays.  I still want to pull for Baylor and other underdogs. When the 2nd chance player turns thing around, it is a feel good story we all like. When the 2nd chance player is convicted of rape and assault and only gets 180 days in jail, it feels dirty and disgusting. I'm not sure where I'm going with this and I'm not sure I will like the outcome. As a Christian and good citizen, I have to examine this some more.

Fact is that there are a lot of football players that are kicked out of schools that can still play and perhaps should be given a second chance - however, if it was left up to me any felony - specially ones that involve sexual assault - would be prohibited from any second chance options.

exactly.   If we're not careful, CFB could become the NFL (national felons league).

We give you guys a hard time but I have no issue with Sumlin or anyone else giving kids a second chance (with a small suspension) for alcohol related offenses (PI, dwi, etc.).  We were all young once and there were times I didn't handle the booze well in college myself.  Thank the Lord, I never ended up in a jail cell but for His grace, I could have.  College is a learning experience and there are bumps along the way.  However, if you haven't learned by that it's not okay to assault women long before college, sexually or physically, you have no business representing a university on the playing field.  Or even on a campus with the opportunity to do it again.  Online classes at University of Phoenix is your friend at that point.

Relative of mine lives near Waco hearing that this could worse before it gets better.........rumored that other girls were paid to keep quiet and other infractions uncovered.

Wow, if true.

Trust me there is precedent at the school, that if ever released publicly would end school's reputation. All I am comfortable saying is that Baylor played favorites with the football player over others with way less issues.

@DavidSmoak: Both #Baylor DE Shawn Oakman and S Orion Stewart made the the trip to Dallas with the team, but won't play against SMU.

@DavidSmoak: #Baylor FB team needs an inside the locker room "Come to Jesus Meeting" from Senior leadership or whoever & yet a Sr. (Oakman) is suspended

Pretty gutsy to suspend players for SMU.

Read on a Waco news site that Stewart is suspended after being arrested for evading arrest in March. Oakman has an active warrant for failure to appear.
