Every few years I notice a case like this. Usually it involves an officer that wrecks a car and makes up some kind of wild story to cover up the incident. In many cases it would likely result in a bad letter in the file or a day or two without pay. 

A lie will sink an officer's career faster than anything. This one might result in a prison sentence.
