Savery vs. Price Highlight Weekend College Baseball

When the college baseball schedule came out a few months ago, people immediately turned their attention to the Astros College Classic, which includes Arizona State, Rice, Texas A&M, Houston, Baylor and Vanderbilt.

Specifically, the possible pitching matchup between Vanderbilt's David Price and Rice's Joe Savery raised some eyebrows.

Fans will get their wish when the Commodores and Owls meet at Minute Maid Park on Friday afternoon.

While the matchup between Price and Savery headlines the weekend, UCLA's Tyson Brummett hopes to continue his successful ways at Miami. The Hurricanes will start veteran Scott Maine, who missed opening weekend because of team violations.

Another matchup to watch features New Orleans right-hander Bryan Cryer and Ole Miss junior Will Kline.

Cryer had dominant numbers last season, while Kline was outstanding down the stretch.

Other intriguing matchups include Arizona State's Brian Flores and Texas A&M's Jason Meyer, and Southern California's Ryan Cook and San Diego's Brian Matusz.

Vanderbilt's David Price vs. Rice's Joe Savery

The Astros College Classic features several of the nation's top teams and players, but no pitching matchup is more anticipated than this one. Vanderbilt left-hander David Price is a projected top five pick in the June draft, while Savery is not far behind. Price, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound junior went 9-5 with a 4.16 ERA in 110 1/3 innings last season. He also struck out 155 and walked 43, while opponents hit .222. Savery missed some time on the mound with an injury last season, but had a 2.76 ERA in 62 innings. The veteran leader also struck out 62 and walked 24. 

 

UCLA's Tyson Brummett vs. Miami's Scott Maine

After dropping a pair of contests to Mercer last weekend, Miami enters this series with extra motivation. Perhaps it translates into a series victory, but for that to happen, the Hurricanes must hit red-hot right-hander Tyson Brummett. Brummett, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound senior had a stellar first outing against Winthrop last Friday. The veteran allowed a run on six hits in eight innings. He also struck out six and walked one. While Brummett was pitching last weekend, Maine was not able to pitch. The junior left-hander went 12-3 with a 4.57 ERA last season. 

 

Arizona State's Brian Flores vs. Texas A&M's Jason Meyer

When the Sun Devils signed JUCO star Brian Flores, coach Pat Murphy immediately tabbed him as the team's Friday night starter. And if you know Murphy, that's quite the compliment. In Flores' first outing against Southern Utah, he didn't disappoint. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound junior allowed a run on two hits in five innings. He also struck out five batters. While Flores takes the mound for ASU, senior left-hander Jason Meyer gets the nod for a Texas A&M team looking for an identity. Meyer went 3-4 with a 2.90 ERA in 77 2/3 innings last season.  

 

Southern California's Ryan Cook vs. San Diego's Brian Matusz

After an impressive first outing against in-state foe Long Beach State, the name Ryan Cook is starting to gain national recognition. Cook, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound sophomore allowed a run on three hits in six innings. He also struck out four and walked one. Last season, Cook went 4-4 with a 5.97 ERA in 69 1/3 innings. He also struck out 31 batters. While Cook is gaining steam, San Diego left-hander Brian Matusz has already taken the college baseball community by storm. The sophomore is 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA in 11 2/3 innings. He has also struck out 21 batters. 

 

New Orleans' Bryan Cryer vs. Mississippi's Will Kline

The most underrated pitcher in America might be New Orleans right-hander Bryan Cryer. Cryer has gained significant attention in the Sun Belt, but his status on the national level could change this weekend, as he shows his stuff against hard-hitting Ole Miss. Cryer had a 2006 campaign to remember. He went 7-1 with a 2.72 ERA in 109 innings. He also struck out 108 and walked 21, while opponents hit him at a .250 clip. The Rebels will counter with junior right-hander Will Kline. Kline went 5-2 with a 3.71 ERA last season. He also struck out 76 and walked 22.

Chris Kelley (San Jac transfer) is starting the Vanderbilt game today at noon for Rice.  Joe Savery is scheduled to pitch Sunday evening against A&M.

Savery likes to pitch on Sundays.  He is in the line-up at 1B on Fridays and Saturdays.  Its his personal preference and has been since he started playing at Rice.
