Lamar baseball drops season opener to No. 22 Oklahoma State

EDINBURG - Collin DeLome, Dan Hernandez and Erik Kanaby each had two hits to pace Lamar University's offensive attack, but No. 22-ranked Oklahoma State was too much in handing the Cardinals a 5-2 loss in the 2007 season opener for both schools Friday in the opening game of the Citrus Tournament in Edinburg Stadium.

Lamar (0-1) will face Illinois-Chicago at 11 a.m. today and will close the tournament Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Cal.State-Northridge. This will be the Cardinals' first-ever meetings with both the Flames and Matadors.

Friday's game got off to a bit of an inauspicious start forLamar and junior starter Allen Harrington. Ty Wright led off the game with a solo home run to put OSU up 1-0.

Kanaby led off the bottom of the first inning for the Cardinals with a double to left field. He was left stranded as Ryan Baker popped out and DeLome and Michael Ambort both grounded out.

Dylan Brown led off the top of the second inning with a single to centerfield. Brown advanced to second on a groundout by Keanon Simon and scored on Ryan Flavell's single to center to put theCowboys up 2-0.

Junior catcher Jeff Vickers homered with one out in the bottom of the fourth to put Lamar on the board and trim theCowboys' lead to 2-1.

Junior Scott Meyer replaced Harrington to start the seventh inning and surrendered a pair of runs. Flavell led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on Matt Lopez' sacrifice bunt.

Corey Brown tripled to center to drive in Flavell. Tyler Mach added an RBI single to left field to plate Brown and extend OSU's lead to 4-1.

The Cardinals added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kanaby singled to left field with one out and advanced to second on a groundout by Baker. DeLome drove in Kanaby with a two-out single to center to make the score 4-2.

Oklahoma State added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a solo home run to left field by Mach off Justin Walker, Lamar's third pitcher. Mach, who struck out in his first two at-bats, went 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead OSU. Wright was 2-for-4, and Flavell was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

Matt Gardner (1-0) started and picked up the win for OSU. He pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Jeff Breedlove pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save.

Harrington (0-1) allowed two runs on six hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts and one walk in six innings. He struck out the side in both the third and fourth innings.

Meyer pitched 1 2/3 innings,allowing two runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Walker pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts. TheCardinals' pitching staff fanned 15 Cowboys.

Kanaby was 2-for-4 with a run scored and DeLome was 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Cardinals. Hernandez was also 2-for-4 with a double. Lamar pounded out nine hits, but was plagued by hitting into four double plays.

The Cardinals return home next weekend to host Holy Cross in a three-game series in Vincent-Beck Stadium.
