Nederland 30 Port Neches-Groves 27/Final

I know in the 80s early 90s TJ was the main rivalry. Nederland a close second.. It wasnt really until Danny Malone did the Nederland rivalry heat up. That and the fact we could not beat T.J., and at that time we owned Nederland..

There ya go.  I was abroad from 79 till about the spring of 89 so missed out on those years.   When was the Bobby August and Wasserman conflict with PNG going on?  Heard people referring to it Friday night.  something about back and forth with August then  Wasserman and Ethridge getting after each other verbally with regard to PNG fans chanting "Big Ned gives ----" during the game

Kam talking with him and telling him what steps to take after the season over, good thing other athletes are stepping up and showing us what to do.

I started to late when my son was in high school.  My advice would be get about a 3 minute hudl video with his best plays and send them out to as many colleges as you can.  It only takes one.  Recruiting coordinators are listed on the colleges website.  I got a lot of preferred walk on interest for my son because of how long I waited.  That along with the camps would be a good start.

The best Rivalry between Odessa and Midland, Vs the Ned and PN-G game will never be agreed on by many but as Nation said we fill both sides up every year regardless if one team is down, that is not the case with West Texas is it?  Plus they don't live across the street from each other our rivalry last a heck of a lot longer than the game, it starts two weeks before the game and because Indians and Bulldogs work on the job with each other it last all year long, We go to church with each other, go out to eat with each other, we even like each other. Of course when MCM comes along we both get serious. That is not the case with West Texas is it? Also I've been to all the Bulldog playoffs dating back into the 50's and I have been to a whole lot of the Indians playoff games (all but one in 75), and I can not recall any of ours or the Indians opponents that out did us in attendance(not even close) Bottom line I think we have the best rivalry in Texas because proximity to each other is so unique, and I wouldn't trade what we (Indians and Bulldogs have for anything else in Texas.

From 1912 - 1974 the rivalry between the South Park Greenies and Beaumont Royal Purples is only rivalry in southeast Texas ever comparable to Mid County Madness. As an ex South Park student I wear a South Park patch on my Nederland Bulldog cap to keep the memories alive.

Nederland back in the 1960's had the city council proclaim, "Beat Port Arthur One More Time Day" for the day that the Bulldogs played TJ since up to (I think) 1970, no Port Arthur school had ever beaten Nederland (although I think Nederland did lose some games against "Port Acres" which was back then a separate city/community from Port Arthur).

TJ was definitely a rival and an important one. What is a rival?

The dictionary gives definitions like, "a person or thing competing with another for the same objective or for superiority in the same field of activity". Yep, two football teams trying to win a game are rivals.

Then there is "archrival". This the dictionary gives examples such as, "a principal rival" or "chief rival".

Throughout our SETX football history teams have played during a few years either in the same district or maybe their games in a given time period were more meaningful due to playoff implications. Nederland played many games against WOS, most of which they lost but near the end of the WOS time in 4A (now 5A), Nederland began playing them pretty darn close head to head and I am fairly certain for their last three years in 4A, knocked WOS out of the playoffs. During those very few years, WOS was a pretty intense rivalry. They were hardly PNG however. Although WOS was a big game and Dan Hooks vs. Larry Neumann got fairly interesting near the end, I don't how many people in Nederland started the year saying that they would rather beat WOS if they only had one win that year.

Hence the term, "archrival".

UT vs. OU is an archrivalry. Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees is an archrivalry. You have to look no farther than UT's stunning win over OU this year on how much that game means. UT is horrible.... but beat OU.

Many people view rivalries as it relates to them like in their school or high school years. Maybe at any given time PNG and TJ or PNG and Nederland or Nederland and TJ were playing for the lone playoff spot. Rivalries like Nederland/Port Neches (later PNG) and Odessa Permian/Midland Lee carry the same tradition over many generations and never fade away regardless of standings.  Maybe in a some years the game didn't mean as much for the district championship or a playoff spot but the intensity and in many aspects, hatred (of a loss), are always there.

What is now MCM was played for 20 years and was a big game long before TJ and Port Neches and later TJ and Nederland every took to the field together.

The Bulldogs and Indians have been going on for a long time, but the Indians did have a big rivalry with the Yellow Jackets too, and so did Nederland, the dogs didn't play the Yellow Jackets until 1964 and at that time Thomas Jefferson High school was one of the largest High schools in Texas, it took the sixth try before TJ could beat the dogs and it cost legendary Coach Buckshot Underwood his job, but Ned has never tried to be PNG's rivalry and like wise for PNG...it just comes natural, as far as Thomas Jefferson, well as everyone knows they just kind of went the way of the Buffalo.
